Before buying an anime figure, identify its exact manufacturer and edition, compare it with that manufacturer’s official product information, and check whether the seller is an authorized retailer for your region. Then weigh packaging, price, release timing, and seller details together. A sticker or product photo by itself cannot prove that the item you will receive is official.
Start with the exact product, not the listing’s claim
Find the manufacturer’s official product page and match the listing to it: product name, manufacturer, edition, figure appearance, included parts, packaging, and stated release details. A similar name or character is not enough; make sure the listing refers to the same release.

Official promotional images show what a genuine product is supposed to look like, but do not establish that the seller will ship that product. If the listing uses only promotional images or leaves important details unclear, ask for current photos of the actual figure and box before buying. These photos can help you compare details, but they are not an authentication guarantee.
Check who is selling it and where
Look up the retailer on the manufacturer’s current official shop or partner-retailer information for your country. Good Smile Company recommends buying through its online store or partner shops. A marketplace listing is not made trustworthy simply by appearing on a familiar platform: check the named seller, its business identity, and whether the manufacturer identifies it as an authorized channel.

- Confirm that the seller’s name and business details are clear.
- Read the return terms before paying, especially if the item is described as sealed or returns are restricted.
- Be cautious if the seller hides its identity or asks you to move the conversation or payment to a private channel. TAMASHII NATIONS lists concealed seller details and requests for private contact among its warning signs.
Return terms are a practical safeguard, not proof that a figure is official. A seller’s authorization and the exact product information are more useful checks for authenticity.
Inspect the box, marks, and figure together
Compare photos of the actual item with the manufacturer’s product information. Check the box design and text, logos, character or series name, included parts, and any copyright or distributor information. TAMASHII NATIONS warns that missing expected marks, unnatural Japanese or inconsistent fonts, missing character or series names, and unexpected parts can be reasons to investigate.

Do not use a universal sticker rule. Good Smile says some products have a license sticker, some use a printed label, and some have no license sticker; designs may also vary by release and distribution region. Its FAQ says most figures have a local distributor’s name or logo on the bottom-back of the package. Treat that as a clue to compare with the maker’s guidance for the exact item, not as proof by itself.

The company says its QUALITY seal has appeared on product packaging since 2023, with some exceptions; products released from 2018 to 2023 used hologram seals. These brand- and period-specific marks do not authenticate figures from other manufacturers.

Use price and timing as warning signs, not verdicts
A price substantially below the usual price, a listing available before the manufacturer publishes official product information, or a seller with incomplete details should prompt extra checking. TAMASHII NATIONS also identifies brands it is not associated with and unexpected option parts as potential warning signs. These clues are not stand-alone tests: no single discrepancy proves that an item is counterfeit, and a plausible-looking listing does not prove it is genuine.
Ask the manufacturer when the evidence is still unclear
Good Smile Company’s support guidance, updated March 11, 2025, says it cannot check an online item before purchase if the buyer does not possess it. For a product already in hand, it asks for:

The company cautions that it may be unable to judge authenticity if the information is insufficient. Its guidance defines bootlegs as unlicensed products and says they are not eligible for Good Smile customer support or its guarantee. For another manufacturer, use that brand’s own support instructions rather than assuming the same process or packaging rules apply.

- Identify the release: write down the exact product name, manufacturer, and edition shown in the listing.
- Compare it with the maker’s page: check appearance, accessories, packaging, and release details against the official product information.
- Verify the seller: check the manufacturer’s current authorized shops or partner information for your country, and review the seller’s identity and return terms.
- Request current item photos if needed: compare the actual box and figure, rather than relying only on promotional images.
- Pause over inconsistencies: investigate unusual text, missing marks the maker says to expect, mismatched parts, implausible timing, or an unusually low price.
- Contact the manufacturer if you own the item: follow that company’s process and provide the evidence it requests.
Manufacturers’ counterfeit guidance reflects a broader enforcement effort, not a way to certify an individual listing. Bandai Namco Holdings describes work with rights holders and authorities, action against counterfeit markets and websites, and customs measures; those activities do not authenticate any particular seller or figure.
