Broadcom is not a pure-play chipmaker, so a fair comparison with other semiconductor stocks starts by separating its semiconductor business from its infrastructure software business. Investors should then line up comparable reporting periods, end-market exposure, profitability, cash flow, debt, risks and valuation—rather than treating headline growth or a single multiple as a verdict.
Is Broadcom a pure-play semiconductor stock?
No. Broadcom Inc. (Nasdaq: AVGO) reports two segments: Semiconductor Solutions and Infrastructure Software. Its chips serve markets including AI accelerators and networking, broadband, industrial, connectivity, servers and storage. Its software business includes VMware-related infrastructure software. That mix makes consolidated revenue, growth and margins different from the corresponding figures of a company that sells only semiconductors. Broadcom’s investor materials and its SEC filings describe its businesses and disclosures.

For a semiconductor-focused comparison, look at Broadcom’s Semiconductor Solutions segment alongside peers’ semiconductor businesses, while also accounting separately for the software segment. For a company-level comparison, include the peers’ full businesses and explain the differences in their mixes. Do not compare Broadcom’s consolidated growth directly with a pure-play chipmaker’s semiconductor-only growth as if they measured the same thing.

Broadcom’s third fiscal quarter of 2026 ended August 2, 2026; the company announced results on September 2, 2026. It reported revenue of $29.591 billion, up 86% year over year. Semiconductor Solutions contributed $20.839 billion, or 70% of revenue, and Infrastructure Software contributed $8.752 billion, or 30%. Broadcom reported free cash flow of $13.665 billion, equal to 46% of revenue. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited comparisons with peers. Broadcom’s Q3 FY2026 results release gives the reported results and financial reconciliations.
#1 Best Overall
The release also reported $16.7 billion in AI semiconductor revenue, up 221% year over year and 54% quarter over quarter. CEO Hock Tan said, “Demand for our custom AI accelerators and networking continues to be very strong.” Both the quote and the AI revenue figures are Broadcom’s statements; they indicate the company’s reported performance and management’s characterization of demand, not a standardized measure that can be directly compared with every peer’s AI-related sales.
How should you compare Broadcom’s AI growth with other chip stocks?
First identify what each company counts as AI-related revenue and whether the figure is reported sales, a management estimate, a forecast or a broader data-center category. Then compare the same fiscal periods and distinguish actual results from outlook. A company’s AI exposure can include accelerators, networking, memory, systems or other components; those categories are not interchangeable.
Broadcom’s reported Q3 AI semiconductor revenue was $16.7 billion. Its September 2, 2026 release also forecast approximately $34.8 billion in total Q4 FY2026 revenue and non-GAAP operating income of approximately 66% of projected revenue. Those Q4 amounts are management guidance, not achieved results. Broadcom cautioned that actual results may vary and said it could not readily reconcile the projected non-GAAP measures to GAAP without unreasonable effort. Its fiscal quarter should not be assumed to match a peer’s calendar quarter.
Which measures make a peer comparison fair?
Business mix and end markets
Compare what each company sells and where it sells it. Consider exposure to AI accelerators and networking, data-center infrastructure, wireless, industrial and other markets. A large semiconductor company is not automatically a close business-model peer. Explain meaningful differences in product mix and revenue sources before drawing conclusions from growth rates.
Rank #3
Growth: results versus outlook
Use reported sales for realized performance and label management guidance separately. Match fiscal periods, and note whether a growth rate is year-over-year or quarter-over-quarter. Guidance depends on assumptions and may not be achieved; it should not be blended with past results.
Profitability and cash generation
Compare gross and operating margins, free cash flow and cash conversion on consistent definitions. If one figure is GAAP and another is company-defined non-GAAP, label that difference rather than placing them side by side without context. Broadcom’s release includes reconciliations showing substantial differences between reported GAAP and non-GAAP measures. Free cash flow is also not a substitute for reviewing the cash-flow statement and the costs and obligations that shape it.
Rank #4
Debt and shareholder returns
Consider debt and interest obligations alongside cash, operating performance and free cash flow. Review dividends and repurchases as capital-allocation choices, not proof that a stock is safe. A dividend alone does not establish the strength of a company’s balance sheet or the sustainability of its cash generation.

Assess the importance and timing of major customers, dependence on contract manufacturers and a limited supplier base, and the ability to win and deliver AI-related business. For software, consider competitiveness, customer acceptance, retention and integration execution. Broadcom identifies these areas, as well as semiconductor cyclicality, competition, acquisition-related execution and significant indebtedness, among its disclosed risks in its FY2025 Form 10-K and Q3 FY2026 release. These are disclosed risks, not predictions that a particular event will occur.
Best Value
Valuation
Compare price-to-earnings, enterprise value to operating cash flow or EBITDA, and free-cash-flow yield only after aligning the measurement date, period, share count, net debt and accounting definitions. Make clear whether earnings or cash flow are GAAP or non-GAAP. Valuation also reflects expectations for future growth: a high multiple is not justified on its own, so ask what growth and profitability assumptions investors are paying for.

Broadcom’s reported results provide a useful company-specific starting point, but they do not establish which semiconductor stock is cheaper, growing faster on a comparable basis or more attractive. No same-date peer operating figures or current valuation multiples are established here. A numeric ranking requires selecting relevant peers, using their latest primary filings for matched periods, aligning GAAP or clearly labeled non-GAAP measures, and using market prices from one stated date. Even then, the result depends on the comparability of their businesses and the assumptions behind forward-looking measures.
