What is broadband phone service?
Broadband phone service usually means voice service carried over a broadband connection using internet protocol. - Look for whether it sells internet access, supplies only the underlying physical connection, or does both.
- Check whether the phone service is identified as interconnected VoIP or another type of telephone service.
- Confirm whether internet and voice are both included, or whether either service must be obtained separately.
- Check the listed connection technology and availability for your address; definitions of provider roles do not establish which services are offered at a particular location.
Does the term have a universal legal definition?
Not in the cited U.S. federal materials. Those sources define broadband internet access and describe interconnected VoIP separately; they do not establish “broadband telephone provider” as a standalone universal federal category. A state program, contract, or company may use the phrase in a more specific way, so its meaning there depends on the relevant rules or service terms.
