Klassik recreates selected parts of the KDE 3 desktop inside KDE Plasma 6. It adds a classic-style panel and menu, selected applets, application styling, a window decoration, color schemes and legacy wallpapers—but it is not a restoration of the complete KDE 3 software stack. The project is built from source and applied through Plasma’s Global Theme settings.
What Klassik recreates
Klassik is a developing visual recreation for a modern Plasma desktop, not a full KDE 3 environment. Its project repository describes components built with Qt 6 and Qt Quick, alongside KDE Frameworks 6 and Plasma 6 libraries. The author describes the panel applets as reimplementations and says more are planned, so the current feature list should not be read as complete KDE 3 parity.

Panel and applets
The project lists a custom panel containment with support for custom background images, plus a K Menu, Quicklaunch, task manager, lock and log out buttons, and analog and digital clocks.

Application appearance and desktop assets
Klassik also includes a rewrite of the KDE 2/3 default QStyle for Qt 6, a port of a KDE 2 KWin decoration to KDecoration3, color schemes originating in KDE 3, and wallpapers that were included with KDE 3. The listed decoration is a KDE 2 port; the available project information does not establish that other legacy decorations, such as Keramik, have been ported.

What it means to run Klassik on Plasma 6
Klassik runs within the current Plasma environment rather than replacing it with the old KDE 3 desktop stack. The project says it uses Qt 6 and supports Wayland and fractional scaling; those are project claims, not independent compatibility test results.
This is more involved than copying an old theme into a new installation. KDE’s Plasma 6 theme-porting guide documents breaking changes: global themes are handled as KPackages and need a manifest.json entry of "KPackageStructure": "Plasma/LookAndFeel" to appear in Global Theme settings. The guide also notes that symlinks cannot be used to load Plasma 6 global themes and documents QML import changes, including QtGraphicalEffects becoming Qt5Compat.GraphicalEffects. Those changes explain the broader porting work; they do not establish a specific Klassik defect.

The repository documents a source-build workflow. It lists Qt 6, KDE Frameworks 6 and KDE Plasma 6 development libraries among the compilation requirements; check the project README for the current dependency details and commands before building.

Before applying it, enable Desktop and window layout. The README calls this out so the Klassik panel is loaded as part of the theme.

The repository identifies master as the branch to clone for normal use. It warns that develop contains work in progress and may be unstable. The documented workflow is a source build; the README does not establish a prebuilt package or one-click installation route.

Known limits and questions about familiar behavior
Some behavior depends on how Plasma manages panels, not just on the old desktop’s appearance. In the project discussion, the author said the requested panel auto-hide behavior could not be implemented from within the containment because KDE reserves space for the panel. The author described enlarging icons on hover as a possible future feature, not a confirmed current capability. These discussion answers may change as the project develops.
The author also characterized Trinity as retaining Qt 3 and X11, in contrast to Klassik’s use of Qt 6 within Plasma. That is the author’s comparison, not a full, independently verified feature comparison between the projects.
Who Klassik is for
Klassik is a fit for someone who already runs Plasma 6 and wants selected KDE 3-era visual elements without switching to a separate legacy desktop. It is less suited to someone seeking a complete recreation of every KDE 3 application, applet, decoration and behavior: the project’s documented scope is selective and still developing. Its source-build installation also assumes the user can meet the listed development dependencies and follow CMake instructions.
