A breadboard lets you build and change a circuit without soldering. Its holes connect in groups—not one by one—so the first step is learning which sockets share an internal metal clip. Once you identify those groups on your board, you can place an LED and its series resistor, wire the circuit, and check polarity before applying power.
What a breadboard does
A solderless breadboard is a reusable platform for temporarily assembling and testing electronic circuits. Component leads and jumper wires push into its sockets, where internal metal clips connect selected holes. You can rearrange a prototype as you learn or troubleshoot without soldering. SparkFun Learn describes the common socket pitch as 0.1 inch (2.54 mm): How to Use a Breadboard.

Which breadboard holes connect?
Terminal strips in the center
In the common layout described by Adafruit, the central working area is divided into five-hole strips. The holes within a strip share an electrical connection; neighboring strips do not. A center gap separates the two sides, which is useful for placing components whose leads must remain electrically separate. Check your board rather than assuming every layout is identical.

Power rails along the sides
Long side rails are commonly used to distribute power and ground. Red and blue lines printed beside them are guides, not proof of how every hole is connected. Some boards have different rail arrangements or interruptions in rail continuity. Before wiring, inspect the board’s actual connection layout and use its markings as aids, not guarantees. Adafruit’s Breadboards for Beginners explains the common layout.
#1 Best Overall
- BOJACK high quality Solderless Breadboard Assortment Kit
- Breadboard is a solderless device for temporary prototype with electronics and test circuit designs. Most electronic components in electronic circuits can be interconnected by inserting their leads or terminals into the holes and then making connections through wires where appropriate.
- The breadboard has strips of metal underneath the board and connect the holes on the top of the board. Note that the top and bottom rows of holes are connected horizontally and split in the middle while the remaining holes are connected vertically.
- The Breadboards Can be Spliced According to the Unit, the Structure is Clear in Color.
- Material: ABS Plastic Panel, Tin Plated Phosphor Bronze Contact Sheet.
Build a first circuit: an LED with a series resistor
A simple first exercise uses a power source, an LED, and a current-limiting resistor connected in series. Jumper wires complete the path between circuit nodes and the breadboard rails. SparkFun’s example uses a 330Ω resistor; that is the value in its example, not a universal choice for every LED or power supply. Follow the requirements for your LED and the instructions for your specific power source. See SparkFun’s first breadboard circuit for its illustrated build.
- Map the board. Identify the central terminal strips, center gap, and power rails on the board you will use. Check whether any rail is interrupted.
- Place the components. Put the LED and resistor leads into the intended connection groups so they form the series path. Leads that must connect to different nodes should not be placed in the same connected strip.
- Wire the nodes. Use jumper wires to connect the component groups and the appropriate power and ground rails. For SparkFun’s breadboard power-supply stick, its guide says to connect GND to the negative rail and VCC to the positive rail to reduce reverse-polarity risk.
- Check before powering. Confirm the component placement, intended connections, and polarity against your board and power-source instructions. Connect power only after that check.
- Troubleshoot by tracing connections. If the LED does not light, inspect whether each lead is in the intended strip and whether each jumper reaches the right node. One misplaced component lead can break the intended circuit.
What to bring to a beginner workshop
A simple exercise can be done with a solderless breadboard, jumper wires, LEDs, resistors, and a suitable low-voltage power source. SparkFun’s parts list is deliberately generous; you may already have some of the items. A bundled kit is optional rather than a prerequisite.

- Compatible with STM32,Raspberry Pi,Arduino and so on.
Choosing a board or kit
Compare boards by working area and size, whether they include power rails, how those rails are laid out and connected, and whether the sockets suit the component leads you plan to use. The cited guides explain breadboard layouts but do not establish that a particular brand or size is best. Adafruit’s Discover Electronics Kit [2.0] product page describes a kit with common components and a prototyping breadboard; check the page’s current contents before relying on it for a particular workshop.
