A bread-and-butter application is software an organization relies on for important, routine work. The phrase describes how essential a system is to that organization; it is not a specific product, software category, or formal industry classification.
What makes an application “bread and butter”?
In its software usage, “bread-and-butter application” means an essential application that supports an organization’s operations. DevX’s glossary, updated October 9, 2023, describes it as software or a system that plays a crucial role in those operations. The label is descriptive: there is no formal test in the glossary for deciding which applications qualify.

In practical terms, an application may earn the description because people depend on it for routine work, information flow, or a primary business process. A system’s importance depends on the organization and its work—not simply on the type of software it is.
What are examples of bread-and-butter applications?
DevX gives email clients, office productivity software, accounting software, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems as examples. They support different kinds of work:
- Email clients: everyday communication.
- Office productivity tools: documents and other routine office work.
- Accounting software: financial records and related processes.
- CRM systems: customer and sales relationships.
These are illustrations, not a universal checklist. A CRM may be central to a sales-led company, while another organization may depend more on accounting or productivity software.
Does the phrase imply a formal software category?
No. “Bread-and-butter application” is a common descriptive phrase, not a standardized technical class. DevX says such applications may receive priority for support, maintenance, and upgrades, but that is the glossary’s characterization—not a universal requirement or rule.

The wider idiom also appears outside software. For example, a 2024 article about Singapore politics uses “bread-and-butter issues” for material concerns such as housing, wages, and local infrastructure. In technical writing, a 2005 marine science review calls determining annual age and growth from fish otoliths a “bread and butter” application. These uses reflect the broader idea of basic or routine concerns and applications; they do not establish a separate software definition.

Read it as a statement about reliance: the speaker considers the application important to everyday operations. The phrase alone does not specify which features the software has, how it is deployed, or what level of support it must receive. To understand why a particular system qualifies, ask which routine tasks or core processes would be affected if it were unavailable.
