First, check whether the problem is Brave or Windows
If the desktop loads and other apps open normally, treat this as a Brave launch problem. If Windows itself will not start or other apps are also failing, browser-specific steps are unlikely to address the underlying issue; use Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance only when there is evidence of a wider Windows startup problem.

Try the low-impact steps first
Restart Windows and try Brave again
Save any work, restart the PC, then launch Brave again. Microsoft lists restarting as an initial program troubleshooting step, although it is not a guaranteed fix for a browser that will not open. See Microsoft’s program troubleshooting guidance.

If Brave opens far enough to reach its settings, use Menu > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults. Brave says this can help when apps or extensions interfere with browser behavior. The reset does not remove bookmarks or saved passwords, but it changes some preferences and may affect cookies or site data, extensions, and themes. Read Brave’s reset instructions before proceeding.

If Brave’s settings menu will not open, reinstall it
Brave’s guidance for a settings menu that is missing or will not open is to uninstall and reinstall the browser. Reinstallation is a next step, not a guarantee: the official guidance does not identify the cause of a particular launch failure.
- Uninstall Brave using Windows’ installed-apps controls.
- Download Brave from the official Brave installation instructions.
- Run the downloaded installer, or save it and then open the saved file to start installation.
- When installation finishes, try opening Brave.
Check Windows Repair or Reset options only if they appear
Windows may offer app-specific troubleshooting under Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Brave > Advanced options. If available, try Repair; if that does not resolve the issue, Microsoft says you can try Reset. These options are not available for every desktop app, so do not assume they will appear for Brave. Microsoft’s guidance covers program installation and removal issues rather than diagnosing Brave launch failures specifically: Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.

Use a clean boot only to investigate a wider software conflict
If Brave remains affected and you suspect background software is involved, Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs to help isolate conflicts. It changes services and startup items, and you must restore normal startup afterward. Microsoft warns that some functionality may be temporarily unavailable and that network policies can prevent the procedure. Do not change advanced boot options in System Configuration without support-engineer guidance. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions carefully.
Windows 10 support and Brave updates are separate issues
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that notice concerns Microsoft updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. Separately, Brave’s compatibility notice says Windows 10 or later is required for future Brave updates. Neither statement diagnoses why Brave will not open on an individual PC.
