Brave for Android has a background video playback setting that may let supported web media continue when you switch apps or lock your screen. Find it in Brave Settings by searching for “background video playback” or “Media”; the exact menu location can vary by app version. Whether a particular website keeps playing is a separate question, especially for YouTube.
What does Brave’s Android background playback setting do?
It controls background playback for web media in Brave. Brave’s Android video troubleshooting guidance tells users to check the setting when they have trouble playing video. That makes it useful both for listening while using another app and for diagnosing playback problems.

It is not a universal bypass for a website’s rules. A site or streaming service can handle background playback differently, and browser settings cannot guarantee that every video will continue with the screen off.

Open Brave on your Android device and open the browser menu.

Tap Settings.

Look for “background video playback” in Settings search, or check the media-related settings. The Brave support article documenting this option dates to July 12, 2022, so its menu location may not match every current app version.

Enable the setting if it is available and test playback on the site you want to use.

If playback still fails, Brave’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying YouTube’s desktop-site mode as a diagnostic step. This is not a guaranteed fix: it may help identify whether the mobile site’s behavior is involved, but the service can still restrict background playback.

Why YouTube may behave differently
Brave’s setting and YouTube’s playback rules are separate. Android Central reported on February 3, 2026, that Google had closed a browser workaround that allowed non-Premium users to play YouTube in the background on mobile. That report concerns YouTube’s service behavior; it does not show that Brave removed its general Android background playback setting. YouTube availability can change, so do not assume that enabling Brave’s setting guarantees free background playback. Read Android Central’s report.

Brave Playlist is a different feature
Do not confuse background video playback with Brave Playlist. Playlist saves media for later and can support background or offline playback on supported platforms. Brave Help Center’s Playlist guide describes background playback when navigating away or minimizing Brave, but its current availability information lists iOS mobile and desktop Nightly. A separate Brave Help Center feature guide explicitly says Playlist is not currently available on Android mobile. The Playlist description therefore is not a promise that Android users can use Playlist.

Confirm background video playback is enabled in Brave Settings.

Try the site’s desktop version as a troubleshooting step, particularly for YouTube; it may not overcome a service restriction.

Check whether the same media continues when you switch apps and when the screen is locked. These are distinct situations, and a site may behave differently in each.

If the setting is missing or named differently, search current Brave Settings for “background video playback” or “Media” rather than relying on an older menu path.
