A lignin-derived compound called bisguaiacol-F (BGF) was proposed in research reported in 2014 as a potential BPA-like building block for making polymers. The work described two BGF isomers with mechanical properties similar to BPA and reported no endocrine-disrupting effects in the tests conducted. Those findings are not a complete safety assessment, and the available sources do not establish that BGF is now sold as a consumer product.
What is the paper-industry-derived BPA substitute?
It is bisguaiacol-F, usually abbreviated BGF. BGF is a specific chemical compound made from chemicals derived from lignin; it is not lignin itself. Lignin is a component of plant material that is separated during pulp and paper production.

Chemistry World reported on the proposed material on 17 March 2014. The article described two BGF isomers—forms with the same molecular formula but different arrangements—and their potential use in making polymers. In that context, “BPA substitute” means a possible alternative feedstock for polymer production, not a drop-in replacement for every BPA use.
How does lignin become BGF?
The reported synthesis combines two lignin breakdown products: vanilyl alcohol and guaiacol. The idea is to turn a residue from plant processing into useful chemical building blocks rather than treating it only as waste. The project presentation cited by Chemistry World said more than 70 million tonnes of lignin were produced annually as a paper-industry by-product, with most then incinerated. That is a figure reported in 2014, not a verified current production estimate.

Kaleigh Reno, identified in the 2014 article as a PhD student who worked on the project, described its motivation this way: “We wanted to use a renewable feedstock to make monomers, and focus on natural resources,”
What did the reported research establish about performance and safety?
Mechanical properties
Chemistry World reported that the researchers found BGF had mechanical properties similar to BPA. This is a claim about the work covered in that 2014 report; it does not establish that BGF performs equally in every material, manufacturing process, or end use.

- Safe for the dishwasher, microwave, and freezer
Potential health effects
The same report said the researchers did not observe endocrine-disrupting effects in their work. That is a limited finding, not proof that BGF is safe in all exposures or applications. A broad safety conclusion would require more evidence than the reported result supplies.
EPA’s assessment of alternatives to BPA in thermal paper stresses that substitutes can have their own hazard trade-offs and that inclusion in the assessment does not constitute EPA endorsement. BGF’s proposed role as a polymer building block is also different from the role of chemicals used as developers in thermal receipt paper.

Is BGF the same as a BPA alternative in receipt paper?
No. BGF was presented as a candidate chemical feedstock for polymers. Thermal paper uses developer chemicals to create an image when heated. An EU Publications Office record for a 2020 report covers BPA, BPS, and other developers in thermal paper in the EU from 2014 to 2019, including the period leading up to the restriction’s entry into force on 2 January 2020. That regulatory history is relevant context for BPA alternatives, but it does not show that BGF replaced developers in receipts.
What does later lignin research tell us?
Lignin valorization continued beyond the BGF report, but later projects should not be confused with the same chemistry. Stockholm University reported in 2024 on separate research using lignin in work aimed at replacing BPA and generating an alternative to cotton. It does not establish that the study used BGF.

The EU’s Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking lists LIGNOFUN as an in-progress demonstration project running from 1 June 2025 to 31 May 2029. The project uses black liquor and other pulp-and-paper sidestreams as feedstocks, and aims to develop lignin-derived ingredients for industrial uses such as foams, adhesives, coatings, composites, wood panels, cosmetics, personal-care products, and rubber products. These are project goals, not evidence that BGF is in those products or that the project’s outputs are already widely marketed.

Can consumers buy BGF products now?
The sources establish a research proposal and ongoing interest in using lignin as an industrial feedstock; they do not establish a consumer-ready BGF product or its current commercial availability. It would therefore be misleading to treat ordinary BPA-free goods, receipt paper, or laboratory reagents as a way to buy or use the specific material described here.

How to judge claims about a “BPA substitute”
- Check the intended use. A polymer feedstock and a thermal-paper developer do different jobs, so evidence for one does not show suitability for the other.
- Look for the exact compound. “Lignin-based” describes a source or route; it does not mean the product is BGF.
- Separate performance from hazard evidence. Similar mechanical properties do not establish safety, and a limited test result is not a full assessment across exposure routes and uses.
- Distinguish research stages. A laboratory result, a demonstration project, and a marketed product are different levels of maturity. Project targets do not prove commercial availability.
