Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: OBS and BoxCast are not direct substitutes. OBS is production and streaming software; BoxCast is a streaming platform that can accept OBS as an input, schedule broadcasts, and simulcast them to a linked YouTube account. For a continuous stream, the key question is whether the BoxCast event schedule can support your required run length: BoxCast says a scheduled broadcast ends at its scheduled time, and its Premium documentation describes events of up to 24 hours—not an indefinitely running event.
How OBS and BoxCast differ
| Decision | OBS directly to YouTube | OBS through BoxCast |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | OBS handles the production and streaming-software workflow. | OBS supplies a stream or program output; BoxCast provides platform distribution and associated services. |
| Connection options documented by BoxCast | A current official OBS-to-YouTube setup procedure was not established in the available source material. | BoxCast documents RTMP and SRT inputs from OBS, and sending OBS’s program feed to a BoxCast encoder. |
| YouTube delivery | A direct route is a natural OBS use case, but current setup details are not covered here. | Link a YouTube account in BoxCast, then select YouTube as a destination when scheduling a simulcast. |
| Scheduling and monitoring | Current scheduling behavior was not established here. The BoxCast guide characterizes OBS troubleshooting as limited compared with the diagnostics available through its encoder; that is a vendor characterization, not an independent test. | BoxCast broadcasts are scheduled. BoxCast describes encoder diagnostics and access to its support process; these are not an independent reliability guarantee. |
| Continuous-run evidence | Current YouTube requirements for this precise use case were not established here. | BoxCast’s Premium support material says events can last up to 24 hours. It does not establish support for a longer, uninterrupted event. |
| Hardware | No hardware requirement is established here as universal. | A BoxCast encoder is one documented option. The necessary display connection, adapter, or capture component depends on the specific computer and encoder. |
Can you run a 24/7 YouTube stream through BoxCast?
Do not assume that a scheduled BoxCast event will run indefinitely. BoxCast states that a broadcast automatically ends at its scheduled time, even if the encoder keeps sending; video sent after that boundary will not be broadcast to viewers or recorded. BoxCast’s Premium documentation describes events up to 24 hours, which is a stated event limit, not evidence of a supported 24/7 event.
Before choosing BoxCast for a continuous channel, ask BoxCast to confirm the maximum event duration for the plan you would use, how recurring events behave at the boundary, what happens during a network or encoder interruption, and whether recovery requires a new scheduled event. Check current YouTube guidance for your content and configuration too: the material available for this comparison does not establish that a particular duration, archive setting, or content type complies with current YouTube rules.
When each option fits
Choose OBS directly when
- You want to produce a stream with OBS and manage the direct YouTube workflow yourself.
- You can verify the current OBS and YouTube setup instructions and provide a computer and connection that remain available for the stream.
- You do not need BoxCast’s scheduling, distribution, or vendor support services.
Consider BoxCast when
- You need a platform workflow around scheduled broadcasts, linked YouTube simulcasting, and the diagnostics BoxCast describes.
- You want to use OBS as an RTMP or SRT source, or send its program output to a BoxCast encoder.
- Your planned event duration fits the limit BoxCast confirms for your account and plan.
These are workflow distinctions, not the result of a controlled performance comparison. The available official documentation shows that OBS and BoxCast can be combined; it does not establish that one produces a more reliable YouTube stream than the other.

Set up OBS as a BoxCast source
BoxCast documents two software-input paths. In either case, create and schedule the BoxCast broadcast; the scheduled event boundary matters because the broadcast ends at its scheduled time.
RTMP from OBS
- In BoxCast, open Sources and copy the stream key and server URL for the source.
- In OBS, select BoxCast as the service and enter the supplied server URL and stream key.
- Schedule the BoxCast broadcast. BoxCast recommends starting OBS five to ten minutes before the scheduled start so the event can begin on time.
- For audio, BoxCast warns not to set OBS audio bitrate below 64 kbps; it says a lower setting can result in HE-AAC and no audio on the BoxCast stream. Recheck BoxCast’s current instructions if the interface or workflow has changed.
SRT from OBS
- In OBS, choose the custom service field and enter the SRT server value supplied by BoxCast.
- Leave the stream-key field blank, as directed in BoxCast’s SRT guide.
- Schedule the BoxCast broadcast and verify the event starts and receives audio and video before relying on it.
Send OBS output to a BoxCast encoder
- Confirm the computer’s available video output and the encoder’s input before buying an adapter or capture component; a capture card is not established as universally required.
- Use OBS Projector Mode to send the program feed to the encoder. BoxCast recommends this route.
- Test the complete signal path, including resolution, frame rate, audio, and the scheduled event start. BoxCast says hardware encoding moves encoding work off the computer and provides its diagnostic data and described network protocol; treat those as vendor descriptions rather than a measured comparison.
Link BoxCast to YouTube and test first
- In the BoxCast dashboard, open integrations and link the YouTube account you intend to use.
- When scheduling a broadcast, select YouTube as a destination for the simulcast.
- Test with privacy set to private or unlisted, as BoxCast recommends, before making the event public.
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. BoxCast says activation can take up to 24 hours; confirm the current activation process in YouTube’s own guidance.
What to verify before relying on either setup
- Event duration: confirm the permitted length and recurrence behavior with BoxCast for the exact plan. The documented Premium limit is up to 24 hours, not an indefinite event.
- Recovery: establish what happens if the encoder, computer, internet connection, or scheduled event stops. The sources do not establish an uninterrupted-operation guarantee.
- YouTube account readiness: finish live-stream activation early and run a private or unlisted test.
- Content rights and policies: confirm that you have rights to all video and audio and check current YouTube rules for live content and any archive or replay you intend to keep. No blanket compliance conclusion follows from the setup instructions.
- Connections: if using an encoder, verify the actual ports and supported signal formats before selecting an HDMI adapter or capture device.
- Plan and pricing: BoxCast’s plans and included features can change. Check its current pricing and confirm which plan provides the features and duration you need before purchase.
