Neither bow-in nor stern-in docking is inherently safer or easier. Choose the approach that gives your boat the most control in the day’s wind and current, fits the space available, and lets the crew secure the boat without unsafe reaching or jumping. If the approach stops being controlled, back out and reset.
What should determine which end goes in first?
Judge the actual maneuver, not the orientation in isolation. Wind and current affect drift, while hull shape, windage, steering, propulsion, and operator experience affect how the boat responds at low speed and in reverse. The approach that works for one boat or berth may be awkward for another.

Wind and current
When possible, approach with the bow pointed into whichever is stronger, the wind or the current. US Sailing gives that guidance for coming alongside a dock, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission advises heading into wind and/or current when possible. This is a way to improve control; it does not prescribe bow-in or stern-in for every slip. US Sailing instructor resources; Pennsylvania Boating Handbook.

Your boat’s handling
Consider the boat’s steering, propulsion, hull, and windage, along with how familiar the operator is with its low-speed and reverse response. BoatUS distinguishes among single-screw keel-equipped boats, single-screw planing boats, and twin-engine boats. A procedure for one type should not be assumed to fit another. Kentucky’s illustrated docking steps are specifically for small, single-engine boats; the manual says procedures vary for larger boats, sailboats, and twin-engine boats. Use guidance appropriate to your vessel and consult its operating instructions. Kentucky boating safety manual, Chapter 3.
Berth shape, traffic, and safe access
A long, open pier generally allows more room than a narrow slip in a confined marina. Before committing, account for neighboring boats, surrounding traffic, clearance, and the space needed to turn or correct alignment. Also consider which end can be secured safely and where people can board without reaching between the boat and dock. BoatUS Foundation: Rules of the Road.

How to prepare for a controlled approach
- Assess the approach. Check traffic, available maneuvering room, wind, and current. Observe the boat’s drift and decide which path offers the best control.
- Agree on crew roles. Tell everyone who will handle each line and what to do if the approach needs to be abandoned. Keep hands and feet out of the gap between boat and dock; do not ask anyone to stop the boat by hand or make a dangerous jump.
- Prepare the gear. Have dock lines ready before the final approach and set fenders at dock level. A boat hook can be useful for handling a line, but it is not a substitute for controlling the boat’s movement. US Sailing instructor resources; Pennsylvania Boating Handbook.
- Move at minimum control speed. Use only the speed needed to maintain steerage. A faster approach leaves less room to correct drift or alignment. US Sailing instructor resources.
- Secure the boat without forcing the alignment. Use the prepared lines to bring the boat into position where appropriate; spring lines may help with positioning. Keep the maneuver within the crew’s ability and the boat’s handling limits. BoatUS Foundation: Rules of the Road.
When should you back out and try again?
Reset if the angle, drift, or alignment becomes poor, or if traffic or limited room makes the maneuver uncontrolled. The Pennsylvania handbook advises: “Plan an exit strategy: If things don’t go according to plan, back out and try again rather than continue a flawed approach.” Have that option in mind before starting, rather than waiting until the boat is committed. Pennsylvania Boating Handbook.
How to build confidence with your boat
Practice low-speed approaches and reversing in a suitable, open area, ideally with a capable instructor familiar with your boat type. Learn how the vessel responds before trying a tight berth or challenging conditions; a small-boat, single-engine procedure is not a universal docking method.
