Prasad previously led Alexa and Artificial General Intelligence at Amazon. The company says his AI and product-commercialization experience will help advance its Physical AI strategy; that is its stated rationale, not evidence of results already achieved.
Who is Boston Dynamics’ new CEO?
Rohit Prasad became Boston Dynamics CEO on October 7, 2026, succeeding Robert Playter. Boston Dynamics says Prasad spent 12 years at Amazon, where he was Senior Vice President and Head Scientist for Alexa and Artificial General Intelligence. The company also credits him with contributing to Alexa’s early development and, more recently, leading development of the Amazon Nova foundation model family. These career details are from Boston Dynamics’ announcement.

How the CEO transition unfolded
Playter announced in February 2026 that he would step down after 30 years at Boston Dynamics. The company’s CFO, Amanda McMaster, became interim CEO while it sought a successor, TechCrunch reported on February 10, 2026. Prasad’s appointment ended that interim period.

Why did Boston Dynamics hire an AI executive?
Boston Dynamics says it wants to bring advanced AI together with its robotics expertise, accelerate its Physical AI strategy, and commercialize intelligent robots for industrial and commercial environments. Board Chair Jaehoon Chang also pointed to Hyundai Motor Group’s manufacturing, logistics, and mobility capabilities as part of the strategic fit. These are management’s goals and explanation for the appointment, not demonstrated outcomes.
In the announcement, Prasad said Boston Dynamics was “uniquely positioned to advance Physical AI through its world-class robotics expertise” and described the opportunity as combining AI and robotics to create value in real-world environments. The company did not provide measurable targets or evidence that the leadership change has already increased deployments or revenue.
Where the appointment fits Boston Dynamics’ robot portfolio
Boston Dynamics describes its portfolio as spanning three platforms for work in unstructured, unsafe, or difficult-to-traverse environments:
| Robot | Company-described role or status |
|---|---|
| Spot | A quadruped used for industrial inspection and facility-performance work. |
| Stretch | A box-moving robot for logistics and retail. |
| Atlas | An electric humanoid platform described in the announcement as in development. |
That range helps explain the company’s emphasis on industrial and commercial uses. It does not, by itself, show how widely each system is deployed or what commercial results the company will achieve under Prasad.

The October 6 announcement does not establish what new products, deployment milestones, or financial results will follow, so the impact of Prasad’s leadership remains to be seen.
