The 2012 borosulfate breakthrough was a structural discovery: researchers reported potassium borosulfate, K5[B(SO4)4], containing an unusual isolated anion in which one boron atom connects to four sulfate groups. It was notable for bringing those groups together in a discrete cluster rather than an extended network—not for a demonstrated consumer or industrial use.
What made the 2012 borosulfate a breakthrough?
The compound’s defining feature is the anion [B(SO4)4]5−. At its center is a boron atom linked through oxygen atoms to four sulfate groups. Potassium cations sit between the discrete anions in the solid, rather than the anions joining one another to make an extended framework. The contemporaneous Chemistry World report from 22 May 2012 presented this arrangement as a new kind of sulfate-rich cluster.

That structural distinction matters because sulfate groups are difficult to combine into a highly charged anion of this kind. The reported arrangement showed that boron and sulfate could form an isolated, well-defined unit. The novelty claim belongs to that report and its time; it does not mean the compound remains the only borosulfate known.

Ordinary sulfate contains sulfur-centered SO4 groups. Borosulfates are mixed boron–sulfur oxoanionic compounds: boron- and sulfur-centered tetrahedra connect through shared oxygen atoms. They are not simply sulfate salts, borates, or borosilicates.

As the 2020 review “Borosulfates—Synthesis and Structural Chemistry of Silicate Analogue Compounds” explains, these compounds can be understood partly through comparison with silicates, whose tetrahedra also connect in different patterns. Depending on how the tetrahedra share oxygen atoms, borosulfate structures can range from discrete molecular anions to chains, layers, and three-dimensional networks. The review also discusses BO3 units as a possible source of further structural diversity; that possibility should not be taken as a feature of every borosulfate.
How did the researchers establish the structure?
The 2012 report says the researchers used several complementary methods: powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. Diffraction provided structural evidence, while the spectroscopic measurements and calculations contributed complementary information. The report does not establish the structure through any one method alone.

How was the compound made?
The team reported heating potassium sulfate with boric acid and sulfuric acid to obtain K5[B(SO4)4]. The news report does not give a complete reproducible procedure. It therefore does not establish reaction proportions, temperature, yield, or a practical home-synthesis method.

What happened in borosulfate research after 2012?
Later studies broadened the structural and synthetic picture. Their reported compounds differ in how their anionic units connect, reinforcing that borosulfate is a family of structures rather than a single isolated discovery.
