The authors attribute this unusual behavior to electron delocalization through boron’s vacant p orbital. That result does not extend to the molecule after it gains an electron: the resulting radical-anion salt was sensitive to air and moisture.
What makes these olympicenes unusual?
Olympicenes are fused, carbon-based ring structures. In the compounds studied by Jing Guo and colleagues, a boron atom occupies the concave 11a position of the fused framework, creating a family called 11a-boraolympicenes. The molecules are planar and fully fused, rather than having boron appended as a separate group.

Boron is strongly Lewis-acidic, so unprotected boron centers can be highly reactive. Many boron-containing molecules are therefore designed with bulky groups that shield the atom. The neutral boraolympicenes in this study showed reported stability against air and moisture despite lacking those bulky protecting groups.

The authors explain the stability through the structure’s electronic organization. Boron has a vacant pz orbital, and the study’s structural analysis and theoretical calculations indicate significant π-electron delocalization across that orbital and the surrounding fused framework. In the authors’ interpretation, this delocalization helps stabilize the boron-containing structure rather than leaving the boron center exposed as an isolated reactive site.
#1 Best Overall
This is the researchers’ explanation for the observed behavior, not a general rule that boron compounds are air-stable. The result applies to the reported neutral 11a-boraolympicenes. The paper does not give a quantified shelf life or a specific air- or moisture-exposure threshold for them.
How were the molecules made?
The researchers used a one-pot, triply borylation-enabled double-fold borocyclization to build the fused boron-containing framework. The paper also describes modular substitution at several positions, allowing the researchers to vary the molecules’ substituents and examine how their properties and solid-state arrangements change.
What changed after one-electron reduction?
The neutral compounds’ air-and-moisture stability should not be confused with the behavior of their reduced form. To demonstrate one-electron reduction, the team treated 6-phenyl-11a-boraolympicene with cobaltocene to prepare a radical-anion salt.

|---|---|---|
| Neutral 11a-boraolympicenes | Air and moisture | Reported as chemically stable without bulky boron-protecting groups; no quantified exposure duration or threshold was given. |
| Reduced radical-anion salt | Inert glovebox | No detectable spectral variation for one week. |
| Reduced radical-anion salt | Air and moisture | Reported as extremely sensitive. |
The salt was characterized using UV-vis-NIR absorption, electron spin resonance, and infrared spectroscopy. Its week-long spectral persistence applies only to glovebox conditions; it is not evidence that the radical anion is stable in ordinary air.

What properties did the study report?
The paper reports intense absorption extending from visible wavelengths into the near-infrared and LUMO energy levels around −3.8 eV. That energy is a reported value for the compounds examined, not a constant for every boraolympicene. The authors also found that crystal-packing arrangements varied with substituent structure.
These results show that substitution can tune molecular and solid-state properties. They do not demonstrate commercial device performance or establish a practical application. The work is a synthesis and characterization study, not a product evaluation.
