Bootstrap’s hamburger menu is a responsive navbar toggler: a button that expands or collapses navigation links at a chosen screen-width breakpoint. The patterns below show useful layout directions and a working Bootstrap 5.3 baseline. The examples are design patterns, not 35 individually tested third-party demos; check any copied snippet against your Bootstrap version and verify its behavior before publishing.
Bootstrap hamburger menu patterns at a glance
Bootstrap’s navbar component supports several different navigation layouts. These pattern families are more useful to compare than treating small color or spacing changes as separate designs.

| Pattern | Menu presentation | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard collapsing navbar | Links collapse under a toggler below a selected .navbar-expand-* breakpoint. |
Your site has a compact set of primary links and a conventional header. | Choose a breakpoint at which the brand and all navigation controls still fit comfortably. |
| Minimal narrow-screen header | The brand may be hidden or reduced at the narrowest viewport while the toggler remains visible. | Space is especially limited on small phones. | Keep the site identity and menu control understandable; do not hide necessary navigation without an alternative. |
| Light or dark navbar | The same collapsing structure uses a different background and foreground treatment. | You need a header that fits a light, dark, or branded site theme. | Check text, icon, hover, and keyboard-focus contrast in both collapsed and expanded states. |
| Navbar with dropdowns | One or more top-level links open nested choices within the navigation. | Your information architecture has related pages that should remain grouped. | Test both the navbar collapse and dropdown interaction, including keyboard access. |
| Offcanvas navigation | A panel opens from an edge of the screen rather than expanding links inline. | You need a larger menu or want the navigation visually separated from the page. | Decide whether the panel overlays or displaces content, and test closing and focus behavior. |
| Fixed or sticky header | The navbar stays at or near the viewport edge as the page scrolls. | Persistent access to primary navigation is important. | Fixed positioning removes the navbar from normal document flow, so content can be obscured unless spacing is accounted for. |
| Brand image, text, or utility controls | A logo, wordmark, search field, or other control shares the navbar with links. | Your header needs more than a brand and a few navigation links. | Check that the added elements do not crowd the header before the collapse breakpoint. |
Bootstrap’s v5.3 navbar documentation covers responsive navbars, togglers, dropdowns, offcanvas layouts, and fixed positioning. The official navbar example templates provide additional layouts to adapt. MDBootstrap also publishes a free hamburger-menu examples page; its individual snippets should still be checked for version compatibility and working behavior.
A working Bootstrap 5.3 collapsing navbar
This compact example uses a dark navbar that expands at the large breakpoint. Below that breakpoint, the toggler controls the collapsed link region. It is a baseline to adapt, not a claim that every visual example on other sites is complete or tested.

The example targets Bootstrap 5.3. Use the matching Bootstrap CSS and JavaScript bundle in the page; the responsive interaction depends on Bootstrap’s Collapse plugin. Bootstrap says, “Responsive behavior depends on our Collapse JavaScript plugin” in its navbar documentation. If the menu button does nothing, first check that the JavaScript is loaded and that data-bs-target exactly matches the collapse element’s unique id.
Choose the collapse breakpoint from the actual header
The .navbar-expand-* class determines the breakpoint at which the navbar changes from collapsed to expanded. Bootstrap’s documented variants include small, medium, large, extra-large, and extra-extra-large breakpoints. A large breakpoint is used in the code above, but it is not a universal recommendation: a long brand name, extra links, or a search box may need the collapsed layout to persist at wider widths.

- Put the real brand, navigation labels, and header controls in the navbar.
- Resize the viewport and find the width at which those elements stop fitting without wrapping, crowding, or colliding.
- Choose the nearest appropriate
.navbar-expand-*variant, then test just above and below its breakpoint. - Repeat the check with longer page labels and any localized text your site supports.
Bootstrap’s versioned documentation explains the responsive navbar structure in v5.3, v5.2, and v5.0. Markup and attributes should be matched to the version actually installed in your project rather than copied as if every Bootstrap release used identical conventions.

A menu can look like a hamburger navbar yet still be difficult or impossible to use. Use a real button, connect it to the collapsible region, and make its state and purpose clear.

- Use a semantic
<nav>landmark for site navigation. If another element must serve as the landmark, providerole="navigation". - Give the toggler a descriptive accessible name, such as
aria-label="Toggle navigation". - Keep
aria-controlspointed at the collapse element’s ID. Ensure that ID is unique and thatdata-bs-targetrefers to the same element. - Set the initial
aria-expandedstate to match the menu’s initial visibility. Bootstrap’s plugin manages the toggler state during its interaction. - Indicate the current page or item with
aria-current="page"where appropriate. - Check visible keyboard focus and adequate contrast for the toggler, links, and any dropdown controls.
- When adding custom transitions, respect reduced-motion preferences. Bootstrap documents reduced-motion behavior for component animation in its v5.3 navbar guidance.
Version compatibility: Bootstrap 5 examples use data-bs attributes
Bootstrap 5 navbar togglers use attributes such as data-bs-toggle and data-bs-target. Do not assume a snippet copied from another major version will work unchanged. Confirm the project’s Bootstrap version and use its corresponding documentation and dependencies.
There are version-specific differences within Bootstrap 5 as well. The v5.2 navbar documentation notes CSS-variable theming for navbars as new in 5.2 and marks .navbar-light deprecated in that version. The example above avoids relying on that class. The cited documentation covers versions 5.0, 5.2, and 5.3; it does not establish which release is latest on the date you read this page, so verify the release used by your project.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Why a hamburger button may not work
- No response when clicked: Confirm the matching Bootstrap JavaScript bundle or Collapse plugin is present, and check the browser console for script errors.
- The wrong region changes or nothing expands: Compare the toggler’s
data-bs-targetwith the collapse element’s ID character for character; IDs must be unique. - The menu is always open or always hidden: Check that
.collapseand.navbar-collapseare on the intended region and that the.navbar-expand-*breakpoint suits the current viewport. - The links fit poorly before collapsing: Move to a wider collapse breakpoint or simplify the header’s contents; choose based on the actual rendered navigation.
- Content begins underneath a fixed header: Add appropriate page spacing because fixed navbars are taken out of normal document flow.
- A copied example has a hamburger icon but no menu behavior: An icon alone is not a functioning navbar. The button must control a collapse or other implemented navigation interaction.
