Bootstrap 5.3 for Beginners: How to Build a Responsive Website

A beginner’s guide to starting Bootstrap 5.3 and building responsive layouts with its mobile-first grid, breakpoint classes, and CDN setup.

Bootstrap 5.3 lets you build a responsive page with ready-made CSS classes instead of writing every layout rule yourself. Start with a basic HTML file and the official CDN setup, then use containers, rows, and columns to arrange content from small screens upward. The quicker workflow comes from reusing framework classes—not from any measured guarantee that a site will load or be built faster.

How do I get started with Bootstrap 5.3?

The official Bootstrap documentation reviewed for this guide identifies version 5.3.8. Its quick-start route uses CDN files, so you can try Bootstrap in a single HTML page without installing a package manager or setting up a build process. Since CDN links and current releases can change, check the Bootstrap 5.3 quick start for the current instructions before copying them into a project.

Create index.html and use the HTML5 doctype, viewport meta tag, stylesheet, and JavaScript bundle shown in the official setup. Use the exact versioned CDN URLs and matching integrity values from that page; integrity lets the browser check that a downloaded file matches the expected content.

<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
    <title>My responsive page</title>
    <link href="" rel="stylesheet" crossorigin="anonymous">
  </head>
  <body>
    <main class="container py-4">
      <h1>Hello, Bootstrap</h1>
      <p>A page built with Bootstrap classes.</p>
    </main>
    <script src="" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
  </body>
</html>

The bracketed text marks where to paste the official URL and its matching integrity value; it is explanatory, not valid HTML to deploy as-is. The official page supplies those values together. Keep the viewport tag: it tells mobile browsers to use the device width for layout and enables expected touch zooming. Without it, a responsive layout may not behave as intended on phones.

Choose a setup route

Route Best for Trade-off
Compiled files through a CDN A first page, tutorial, or quick prototype Minimal setup, but customization is limited to using the provided files and overriding styles.
Source files through a package-manager workflow A project that needs customized Sass variables, breakpoints, or a managed dependency Requires a build workflow; changing Sass variables means recompiling Bootstrap.

Bootstrap documents both distribution and source workflows. For a beginner layout, the CDN route is enough; move to source files when you have a specific reason to customize or integrate Bootstrap into a build. See the Bootstrap Sass customization guide for how source-level changes work.

How do Bootstrap containers, rows, and columns work?

Bootstrap’s default grid is a mobile-first flexbox system divided into 12 columns. Think of the three core classes as a nesting pattern: a container sets the page’s content area, a row groups columns, and columns divide that row into widths.

  • .container centers content and adds horizontal padding. Its maximum width changes at larger breakpoint tiers.
  • .container-fluid spans the available width rather than using the tier-based maximum widths.
  • .row wraps columns and uses negative margins to work with the column padding that creates gutters.
  • .col and .col-* classes define how columns share or occupy the row.

For example, this structure gives each card half of the row from the medium breakpoint upward, while allowing the columns to stack on narrower screens:

<div class="container">
  <div class="row g-3">
    <div class="col-12 col-md-6">
      <section class="p-3 border">First card</section>
    </div>
    <div class="col-12 col-md-6">
      <section class="p-3 border">Second card</section>
    </div>
  </div>
</div>

col-12 makes each card span all 12 grid columns on the smallest screens; col-md-6 makes each span six of 12 at the medium tier and above. The g-3 class sets spacing between grid items. This mobile-first pattern starts with a simple stacked layout and adds a wider arrangement when the viewport reaches the chosen breakpoint. Bootstrap’s grid documentation and examples show further combinations.

How do Bootstrap breakpoints work?

Breakpoint infixes such as md and lg are used in class names to apply a layout rule at a minimum viewport width. Once active, a rule continues to apply at wider tiers unless another class overrides it. The default Bootstrap 5.3 values are:

Tier Minimum viewport width Class infix Container maximum width
Extra small Below 576px None Not stated for this tier in the grid documentation
Small 576px sm 540px
Medium 768px md 720px
Large 992px lg 960px
Extra large 1200px xl 1140px
Extra extra large 1400px xxl 1320px

These are Bootstrap’s documented default grid specifications, not a recommendation to target a particular device width. The breakpoint documentation describes them as a general foundation; when using source files, you can customize the Sass values. For a first page, use the defaults and choose breakpoints based on where the content stops fitting comfortably.

Read a breakpoint class from left to right

In col-md-6, col identifies a grid column, md names the minimum-width tier, and 6 means six of the row’s 12 columns. Below 768px, that class alone does not require a half-width column; above that threshold it does. Add a smaller-tier class such as col-12 when you want to specify full-width stacking explicitly.

When does Bootstrap need JavaScript?

The stylesheet handles visual styling and layout, but it does not provide interactive component behavior on its own. Bootstrap’s JavaScript-dependent components include accordions, dismissible alerts, button toggles, carousels, collapse, dropdowns, modals, responsive navbar behavior, offcanvas panels, toasts, tooltips, and popovers. The quick start’s JavaScript bundle includes Popper, which is used to position dropdowns, popovers, and tooltips. See the JavaScript documentation for component requirements.

If your page only uses the grid and other CSS styling, the stylesheet is sufficient for those styles. If you add an interactive component, include the appropriate Bootstrap JavaScript; do not expect a CSS-only setup to open a modal or operate a dropdown.

Will Bootstrap 5.3 work in my visitors’ browsers?

Bootstrap’s v5.3 browser-support page says it supports the latest stable releases of major browsers and platforms, and links its target list to Browserslist. Internet Explorer 11 and earlier are excluded. If your audience must use older browsers, check the documented browser targets against that requirement before choosing Bootstrap.

Using Bootstrap does not by itself establish that a page is fully accessible or production-ready. Those qualities depend on the content, markup, interactions, and testing of the finished site.
