That is a starting point, not a universal ideal: the right distance depends on the speaker, the room and your listening position. Move the speakers in small, matching increments and listen for even bass, centered voices and a stable stereo image.
How much space should you leave behind bookshelf speakers?
Manufacturer guidance varies, so check the instructions for your exact model before using a general rule. These recommendations are starting points, not directly comparable measurements of a single universal optimum.

| Source | Published guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Fluance | Start 1–2 feet away where possible. | Give rear-facing ports room and experiment: moving closer can increase bass, while moving farther away can reduce it. |
| KEF | For small spaces, allow at least 15–30 cm (about 6–12 inches). Its guide says about 0.85 m (roughly 34 inches) generally eliminates low-frequency cancellation issues. | These are KEF’s recommendations, not a rule for other speakers or rooms. The guide also notes that closer placement may sometimes reduce particular reflections, while placing speakers too close can exaggerate bass. |
| Teufel Support | About 60–120 cm behind speakers and 60–90 cm from side walls; updated October 1, 2026. | Avoid corners where possible, and adjust a few centimeters at a time while checking bass, centered voices and spatial image. |
| Klipsch Support | At least two feet behind speakers is recommended for surround setup, especially for rear-vented models, unless a vent plug is used. | Follow the speaker’s own instructions; this advice is for Klipsch surround setup, not a universal bookshelf-speaker specification. |
Klipsch’s general placement guide likewise treats the best arrangement as room-specific and recommends small, recorded adjustments. The different published distances are a reason to use the exact model manual as your first reference, particularly if it specifies clearance or includes port plugs.

Why the distance changes what you hear
Bass spreads through the room and reflects off nearby surfaces. Reflected sound can reinforce some frequencies and cancel others; moving a speaker changes which frequencies are affected. The result may be boomy or uneven bass, or a muddy presentation. Side walls, floor, ceiling and the listening position also influence the sound.

- SIDE PANEL CONTROLS - Use the side panel knobs to adjust the EQ to your liking. The controls are located on the active/powered speaker.
A rear-facing port is relevant, but it does not set one mandatory clearance for every speaker. KEF says rear-ported designs are more sensitive to wall placement than front-ported ones, while still allowing close placement in constrained rooms. Follow the model’s guidance, avoid blocking the port and judge the sound from your usual listening seat.
How to adjust placement in your room
- Check the speaker manual. Look for a minimum wall clearance and instructions about any supplied port bungs or plugs.
- Set a matched starting position. Keep both speakers the same distance from the rear wall. If space allows, begin around 1–2 feet away. In a tight room, follow the maker’s close-placement advice and leave the port unobstructed.
- Keep the arrangement balanced. Place the pair symmetrically where the room permits. Arrange the speakers and listening seat in roughly an equilateral triangle, and aim to have the tweeters near seated ear height.
- Listen, then move both speakers a little. Use familiar music or other material with clear voices and tuneful bass. Move the pair forward or backward a few centimeters at a time, changing one placement variable at once. Note whether bass is even, voices stay centered and the stereo image remains clear.
- Follow the audible problem. If bass sounds boomy, try moving the speakers farther from the wall. If it sounds thin, try moving them closer. Keep the position that balances best in your room.
Try not to place the pair in corners if you can avoid it; bass reinforcement is stronger there. If a shelf or cabinet prevents small adjustments, stands are an optional way to gain positioning flexibility—not a requirement.

What to weigh when space is limited
- Available clearance: Start with the room’s practical limit, then compare it with the speaker manual’s instructions.
- Port design and guidance: Check whether the speaker has a rear-facing port and whether its maker specifies clearance or port plugs.
- Sound at the listening seat: Prefer balanced bass and clear, centered voices over a distance that looks right on paper.
- Symmetry and image: Keep left and right placement as similar as possible so the stereo presentation remains stable.
- Room to experiment: Furniture can restrict movement; stands may help when they make incremental positioning possible.
The distance figures above are manufacturer recommendations, not population statistics or the result of one controlled comparison. For a general first try, 1–2 feet is useful when available; the final position is the one that works with your specific speakers and room.
