Which browser and interface are you using—Chrome’s Bookmark manager, Firefox’s Library, or a bookmark menu? The steps differ, and a missing highlight does not by itself show whether a bookmark failed to save or whether only its selection indicator is missing.
First, identify what is not being highlighted
In Chrome on a desktop computer, open More > Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark manager. Google documents this route and selecting bookmarks in the manager in its Chrome bookmark instructions. If you use Firefox, its bookmarks are managed through Firefox’s Library and related controls; see Mozilla’s Firefox bookmarks guide.

Check what you mean by “selected”: a left-clicked row, keyboard focus while moving through the list, an item under the pointer, a right-clicked item, or a bookmark selected in search results. Try each relevant action and note whether the item can still be opened or acted on even though no color or other visual indicator appears. This helps distinguish a display problem from a failure to select the item, but it is a diagnostic check—not a documented fix.
Try another way to find the bookmark
Search from Chrome’s address bar
In Chrome, type @bookmarks in the address bar, then search for the bookmark and select a matching result. Google describes this address-bar search in its Chrome search announcement. If selection is clear there but not in the Bookmark manager, that points to a difference between the two interfaces; it does not establish the cause or a permanent fix.

Compare selection with opening and context-menu actions
- Try selecting the bookmark with the mouse and with keyboard navigation.
- Check whether opening it works.
- Try right-clicking it and see whether the context menu appears for the intended item.
Record which actions work and where the indicator disappears. A bookmark that opens or receives the expected context menu may still be selected even if the row’s highlight is not visible.
Check whether bookmarks are actually failing to save
A missing selection color is different from being unable to add, edit, or keep bookmarks. If you can add a bookmark, change its details, and find it again after restarting the browser, the evidence points to a visual-indicator issue rather than a save failure.

For Firefox, Mozilla’s troubleshooting advice about bookmark-related extensions applies when you cannot add or change bookmarks. Mozilla also says changes that disappear after restarting can be related to a write-protected bookmarks file. These are documented save/edit problems, not established explanations for a highlight-only symptom. See Mozilla’s bookmark saving troubleshooting guide (last updated 2024-11-23).

Note the browser and version before changing anything
Write down the browser name, version, operating system, and exact interface where the indicator is missing. If the problem began after an update, note the version before and after if available, and check whether the behavior differs in another browser. Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers such as Brave can share some underlying components, but a report about one browser does not prove that another has the same defect.

A Reddit user reported that the selection indicator disappeared in Chrome’s Bookmark manager after an update and that another commenter later saw it return on Chrome 154.0.8037.58. This is an anecdotal community report, not an official diagnosis or confirmation of a browser-wide bug: the discussion is available here. It is not enough to conclude that an update caused your symptom or that a particular version fixes it.

Browser bookmark interfaces are not identical. Firefox’s bookmark system is documented in Mozilla’s nontechnical overview, while Chrome documents its manager and address-bar search separately. The sources do not establish a single known bug or universal fix for a bookmark that is selected but not visibly highlighted. If the bookmark still opens and can be selected through another interface, use that route while noting the affected browser and version; avoid treating unrelated save/edit troubleshooting as a confirmed solution to a display-only problem.
