A wired connection is usually the safer choice for a fixed TV or projector setup, where lip sync, audio-format support, and predictable delivery matter. Neither connection type guarantees better sound by itself: the speaker and the source both matter.
Bluetooth vs. wired speakers at a glance
| What matters | Bluetooth | Wired |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Portable listening and convenient playback from a phone or tablet. | Fixed TV or projector setups where stable delivery and lip sync are priorities. |
| Video sync | Can add latency; actual results vary by devices, apps, and settings. RTINGS tests Bluetooth latency separately on iOS and Android and notes that compensation varies. | Often preferable for lip sync when the source and speaker support a suitable wired or HDMI connection, according to TCL and BenQ. |
| Compatibility | Source and speaker need a shared Bluetooth codec; a codec badge on just one device is not enough. | Both devices need compatible inputs, outputs, and supported audio formats. |
| Placement | No signal cable between source and speaker, but range varies and walls can reduce it. | Requires a signal cable and practical routing between connected components. |
| Power and portability | Wireless audio does not mean wire-free power: check whether the speaker needs to be plugged in or charged. | Powered speakers need power; passive speakers also need an amplifier. Check the specific system. |
“Wired speakers” can mean different setups. A powered speaker may accept an analog or digital cable directly from a source. Passive speakers normally connect to an amplifier, which then connects to the source. Check the actual inputs on both devices before choosing a connection.
When Bluetooth is the better choice
For phones, tablets, and flexible placement
Bluetooth is convenient when the source is a phone or tablet and you want to play audio without running a signal cable to the speaker. It can also make sense when you move a speaker between rooms or place it somewhere a cable would be awkward. The speaker still needs power, whether from a battery or an outlet.
When you can tolerate possible video delay
Bluetooth adds encoding and decoding steps, and latency varies by source, speaker, and app. RTINGS uses less than 150 ms as a good Bluetooth latency benchmark in its evaluation methodology; that is a test criterion, not a promise for every device or viewer. RTINGS tests iOS and Android separately and warns that apps and devices compensate differently, so a result that works for one combination may not work for another.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When a wired connection is the better choice
For a TV or projector where lip sync matters
If dialogue appears out of sync with the picture, try a supported wired or HDMI connection before replacing the speaker. TCL describes wired or HDMI as preferable for lip sync and sound quality when available. BenQ likewise recommends wired speakers to avoid Bluetooth sync issues on the projector models covered by its projector support answer. Confirm which ports and audio formats your particular source and speaker support; a wired label alone does not establish compatibility.
For predictable signal delivery
A cable avoids Bluetooth codec negotiation and the wireless link, but it does not guarantee that every wired speaker will sound better than every Bluetooth speaker. The speaker’s design, supported inputs, and the source-to-speaker match all affect the result. TCL notes that Bluetooth may involve compression, latency, stereo-channel limits, and format limits compared with wired or HDMI audio; these are characteristics of the connection, not a ranking of all speakers.

Check codec and input compatibility before buying
Bluetooth codecs must match end to end
Bluetooth sends encoded audio that the receiving speaker decodes. The source and speaker need to share a codec; when they do not share a more advanced option, they may use a compatible fallback. Sennheiser’s explanation, updated April 13, 2026, notes that the selected codec is not always the highest one supported by either device. Bluetooth LE Audio, which uses LC3, is separate from Bluetooth Classic and is not directly compatible with it. Check the full source-and-speaker combination rather than choosing on the strength of one codec listing.
Wired inputs must match too
For a wired connection, check the source’s output and the speaker’s input, including connector type and supported format. A speaker with an analog input will not necessarily connect directly to a source that offers only an incompatible output. For passive speakers, also account for the amplifier in the chain. The reviewed product and support information does not provide a complete amplifier-matching guide, so confirm the requirements for the specific equipment.

Range, walls, and connection stability
Bluetooth range is not a fixed indoor promise. RTINGS reports 145 ft (44.2 m) as a good range value under its test framing, which measures line of sight; walls and their material can shorten the usable distance. Treat that figure as a methodology benchmark, not the distance you should expect through rooms in your home. The RTINGS methodology page does not state a publication year for these benchmarks.
Connection stability can also depend on the speaker’s settings and environment. On the Sony SRS-XE300, the manufacturer documents a sound-quality priority using AAC, LDAC, and SBC, and a stable-connection priority using SBC. Sony warns that interruptions may occur in sound-quality priority depending on source-device settings and ambient conditions. This is a model-specific example, not a universal Bluetooth setting.

A hybrid speaker can preserve both options
Some powered speakers have Bluetooth and a wired input, so you can use wireless playback for casual listening and connect an appropriate analog source by cable when useful. For example, Audioengine describes its B2 as a powered stereo speaker with Bluetooth aptX and a wired analog input for turntables, tape decks, and other analog sources. The manufacturer says it also supports SBC and AAC for Bluetooth devices without aptX. Check the speaker’s current input details and confirm that your source is compatible.

How to choose for your setup
- Identify the source. For a phone or tablet and flexible placement, Bluetooth is a convenient starting point. For a TV or projector, make lip sync and available ports central to the decision.
- Check the endpoints. For Bluetooth, verify a codec the source and speaker share. For wired audio, match the source output to the speaker input and confirm supported formats.
- Consider the room and placement. Bluetooth avoids a signal cable, but walls can reduce range. Wired audio needs a route for the cable between components.
- Check power needs. Confirm whether the speaker is battery-powered or needs an outlet. If it is passive, plan for a compatible amplifier.
- Test the actual use case when possible. With a TV or projector, check whether dialogue stays in sync using your own source, app, and speaker; with Bluetooth, verify that the connection remains stable at the intended placement.
