Consumer staples stocks can be more resilient in a bear market because they sell everyday goods—such as food, toothpaste and household cleaners—that people are less likely to stop buying when money is tight. Steadier demand, established brands and some ability to raise prices may support revenue and earnings. That is a business advantage, not a shield for the share price: staples stocks can fall, lose ground to other sectors or disappoint investors.

Why staples businesses may hold up when the economy weakens

People keep buying necessities

Households can postpone a holiday, a new appliance or other discretionary purchases more readily than food and basic household products. That can make demand for staples less sensitive to an economic slowdown than demand in more cyclical industries. Fidelity describes the sector’s revenues and earnings as relatively stable historically, but this is a broad tendency, not a promise about every company or downturn. Brands can provide some pricing power

A company with trusted brands may be able to raise prices when ingredients, packaging, transportation or other costs rise. If customers continue buying, those increases can help protect margins. But pricing power varies: shoppers may switch to a cheaper brand or store label, buy less, or reject higher prices. In those cases, stable demand for the product category does not necessarily translate into stable sales or profits for a particular company. (Fidelity’s consumer staples overview.)

Mature businesses may return cash to shareholders

Many staples companies are mature businesses that pay dividends. A dividend can contribute to an investor’s total return, but it does not stop the stock price from falling, and a company can reduce or suspend its payout. Treat the dividend as one part of the investment case, not as downside protection. (Fidelity Institutional’s sector overview, updated January 7, 2026; Fidelity’s consumer staples sector page.)

What historical evidence says—and what it cannot say

In a June 24, 2020 analysis, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that, across the bear-market episodes included in its historical analysis, the broader market’s average loss was 40%, while consumer staples averaged a 26% gain. The analysis used longer-run data ending May 29, 2020. Those results describe that historical sample; they do not establish how staples will perform in every bear market or predict the next one. (S&P Dow Jones Indices, “Have Defensive Sectors Stood the Test of Time in Global Markets?”.)

The S&P 500 Consumer Staples index is a classification of S&P 500 constituents assigned to the consumer staples sector under GICS. The index label does not mean its members share identical risks: companies can differ in products, costs, debt, execution and sensitivity to consumer behavior. (S&P 500 Consumer Staples index page.)

Why staples stocks can still fall or underperform

  • Market risk remains. Investors can sell staples shares during a broad decline, even if the companies continue to sell essential products.
  • Costs can squeeze margins. Commodity, packaging, transportation and energy costs may rise faster than a company can raise prices.
  • Customers can trade down or change habits. Lower-cost alternatives, shifting tastes and changes in purchasing patterns can hurt volumes or mix.
  • Valuation matters. A dependable business can still be a poor investment at a price that leaves little room for weaker growth or disappointing earnings.
  • Other sectors may lead during recoveries. Fidelity’s business-cycle guide notes that less cyclical sectors may not keep pace early in a recovery, when investors turn toward more economically sensitive businesses.

These risks are not merely theoretical. In a January 7, 2026 Fidelity Institutional outlook, portfolio manager Ben Shuleva attributed consumer staples’ underperformance against the broad S&P 500 in 2025 to investors favoring AI-driven growth, changing spending patterns and category-specific concerns. His analysis also pointed to sluggish volume growth and pressures affecting some food and beverage categories, including GLP-1 medication use, evolving alcohol consumption and strained lower-income consumers. Those are dated market observations, not a universal explanation for every company’s results. (Fidelity Institutional; Fidelity’s sector overview.)

How to assess a staples company or fund

Resilience depends on the business and the price paid for its shares, not just the sector name. When researching an individual company, consider:

  • Demand and volume: Does the company sell products people regard as necessities, and have customers kept buying when prices rose?
  • Brand strength and alternatives: Can customers readily switch to a store brand or competitor?
  • Costs and margins: How exposed is the company to ingredients, packaging, transport and energy costs, and can it pass increases through without losing too much volume?
  • Valuation and growth: Does the share price already assume dependable earnings, and what could support future growth?
  • Financial and dividend resilience: Can the business support its debt and cash distributions if earnings weaken?

An ETF or mutual fund can spread exposure across multiple companies, but it does not eliminate market risk. Compare the fund’s holdings and concentration, index methodology, fees and liquidity with your intended holding period. Fidelity provides a general access point for researching stocks, ETFs and mutual funds; it does not by itself establish that any particular fund is suitable. The practical takeaway

Consumer staples may offer relative business stability because demand for everyday goods can persist through economic stress, while brands and pricing power may help absorb some cost increases. But business resilience and stock-price resilience are different things. Valuation, margins, consumer choices and market leadership can all outweigh the defensive character of the products, so the sector should not be treated as a guarantee against losses.
