Bluetooth can transmit stereo audio. With Bluetooth Classic, stereo media playback typically uses A2DP; Bluetooth LE Audio also supports stereo, including synchronized streams for separate earbuds. What you hear—and whether stereo continues when you use a headset microphone—depends on the audio mode and on the capabilities of both devices.
How Bluetooth carries stereo sound
Bluetooth audio is not a single format. Bluetooth Classic uses different profiles for different jobs. The Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) is used for media playback and supports stereo. The Hands-Free Profile (HFP) is used for headset calls and microphone access.

On Windows using Classic Audio, A2DP is for playback and does not provide audio capture. HFP supports microphone capture alongside monaural playback. That is why music can sound less spacious or detailed when a headset microphone becomes active on a Windows PC: the system may switch from A2DP to HFP. This documented behavior applies to Windows Classic Audio; it should not be assumed to describe every operating system or Bluetooth implementation. Microsoft’s Bluetooth Classic Audio documentation explains the distinction.
Bluetooth audio modes at a glance
| Mode | Typical purpose | Stereo and microphone behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Audio A2DP | Media playback | Supports stereo playback. On Windows, it does not provide audio capture. |
| Classic Audio HFP | Headset calls and microphone access | On Windows, provides microphone capture with monaural playback. |
| LE Audio | Low-energy audio, including unicast, multi-stream, and broadcast uses | Supports synchronized multiple streams; exact behavior depends on product capabilities and implementation. |
Can Bluetooth headphones play stereo while using the microphone?
There is no single answer for every device. On Windows with Classic Audio, A2DP provides stereo playback but not microphone capture, while HFP provides microphone access with monaural playback. Other operating systems and device combinations may behave differently, so check the audio mode and supported capabilities for both the computer or phone and the headphones.

If sound quality or stereo imaging changes when you join a call or enable voice chat, the system may have switched audio modes. Check the active input and output devices in your operating system and, where available, select a separate microphone so the headphones can remain the playback device. Whether that avoids a mode change depends on the particular system and hardware.
What LE Audio changes
LE Audio is a separate Bluetooth audio architecture built on Bluetooth Low Energy. Its multi-stream capability can send multiple independent, synchronized streams—for example, separate streams to the left and right earbuds. That can support stereo imaging in true-wireless headphones. LE Audio products do not necessarily have to support Classic Audio, although some products support both. Bluetooth SIG’s LE Audio overview and its LE Audio FAQs describe these capabilities.

Auracast is another LE Audio use: one source can broadcast audio to multiple compatible receivers. That is different from the familiar one-source-to-one-headphone connection. Receiving a broadcast requires compatible products; the Bluetooth name or version alone does not confirm that a device supports Auracast.

Codecs, quality, and compatibility
A2DP requires support for SBC, while additional codecs depend on the devices. A codec label by itself does not guarantee stereo, microphone behavior, or a particular listening experience: the source and receiver must support compatible audio modes and capabilities. Bluetooth version numbers alone are not a reliable way to determine those details. The Bluetooth SIG’s technical overview of LC3 discusses the codec, and the Basic Audio Profile specification describes LE Audio’s audio framework.

The Bluetooth SIG LE Audio page quotes Manfred Lutzky, Head of Audio for Communications at Fraunhofer IIS, saying that listening tests found LC3 improvements over SBC even at a 50% lower bit rate. The cited page does not state when that figure was published, and it is a statement about those listening tests—not a guarantee that every LC3 implementation will sound better than every SBC device in all conditions.

- Check the headphone specifications. Look for stereo media playback and the audio modes or profiles the model supports. If you specifically need LE Audio, multi-stream, or Auracast, verify that feature by name.
- Check the source device. Confirm that the phone, computer, or other source supports the same audio mode and any codec or feature you need. Android’s Bluetooth Low Energy Audio overview describes Android platform support; availability still depends on the specific device and implementation.
- Test the microphone use case. Connect the headphones, play stereo content, then activate the microphone in the app you plan to use. Note whether the output changes. This checks your actual device and operating-system combination rather than relying on a Bluetooth version number.
- Check the selected audio devices and mode. If sound changes during calls, review the operating system’s input and output selections. On Windows Classic Audio, microphone use may involve HFP rather than A2DP.
Bluetooth standards establish what a mode can support; they do not establish compatibility for an unspecified phone, computer, or headphone model. Confirm the feature lists for both ends of the connection.
