Bluetooth Passwords: What Pairing Prompts Protect—and What They Don’t

Bluetooth does not have a master password, but pairing prompts and device settings can help you manage individual connections. Learn how to pair carefully and remove unwanted devices.

No: Bluetooth has no universal password setting that locks the radio against every nearby device. Instead, a particular pairing procedure may use a passkey or PIN, ask you to compare numbers, or ask you to confirm a connection. These steps apply to that pairing—not to Bluetooth as a whole.

What a Bluetooth password does—and does not—mean

Bluetooth settings let you manage discovery, connections and devices already paired with your phone or computer. They do not provide a single master password for switching on Bluetooth or preventing every device from attempting to connect.

A pairing credential belongs to a specific pairing procedure. It is separate from your phone’s screen-lock password, and it does not act as a password for the Bluetooth radio. The procedure varies by the devices and method involved; some pairings use a code, while others use number comparison or a confirmation prompt. Bluetooth SIG Core Specification 6.2 distinguishes the six-digit Bluetooth Passkey used in Secure Simple Pairing and the Security Manager from the Bluetooth PIN terminology associated with legacy pairing.

How to pair safely on Android

Android’s documented pairing flow is to open Bluetooth settings, choose Pair new device, tap the accessory, and follow the on-screen instructions. The screens and available options can vary by Android version and accessory. Android Help says devices stay paired until you unpair them.

If Android asks for a passcode and you do not know it, its help page suggests trying common values such as 0000 or 1234. Treat those as accessory-specific troubleshooting suggestions—not universal Bluetooth passwords. Check the accessory’s instructions or manufacturer support if they do not work.

How to handle pairing requests and number prompts

  • Pair only when you started setup. If a request appears unexpectedly, reject it rather than approving it to make the prompt go away.
  • Check the device identity. Continue only if you recognize the accessory you intend to pair.
  • Compare numbers on both devices. If the pairing flow shows a numeric comparison value on each device, accept only when they match and you initiated pairing.
  • Do not confuse a comparison number with a passkey. The Bluetooth SIG describes a method-confusion vulnerability in which a nearby attacker could take advantage of user confusion between a numeric comparison value and a passkey, under particular conditions. The SIG recommends clearer interface wording and updates. Bluetooth SIG security notice

NIST advises users not to respond to a PIN request unless they initiated pairing and are certain the request comes from one of their devices. It also recommends pairing as infrequently as possible and in a secure location, where someone nearby is less likely to observe passkey entry. See NIST SP 800-121 Rev. 2, published January 19, 2022 and updated November 29, 2022.

Reduce the chance of unwanted connections

  • Remove pairings you no longer need. In your device’s Bluetooth settings, unpair accessories you no longer use. On Android, paired devices remain paired until removed. Android Help
  • Install operating-system and accessory firmware updates. Bluetooth SIG vulnerability notices recommend applying the latest recommended updates; check the device maker’s guidance for model-specific steps. Bluetooth SIG security notices
  • Turn Bluetooth off when practical. NIST includes disabling Bluetooth when it is not in use among its operational recommendations. This reduces exposure while the capability is off, but it is not a password-setting substitute. NIST SP 800-121 Rev. 2
  • Pair deliberately and privately. Avoid entering pairing codes where others can observe them, and do not approve a request you did not initiate.

What Bluetooth security guidance can—and cannot—guarantee

The Bluetooth SIG’s 2020 Security and Privacy Best Practices Guide says the authenticated Secure Simple Pairing methods it describes make an attacker’s chance of successfully interceding in the key exchange less than 0.0001%—a stated failure probability of 99.9999% or greater. That figure applies to the specified pairing procedures in the guide; it is not a universal safety probability for every Bluetooth device, implementation or threat. The guide distinguishes these methods from legacy pairing and recommends preferring modern methods.

Bluetooth SIG notices also describe conditional risks that depend on implementation and pairing method, not proof that every Bluetooth device or connection is vulnerable:

  • Method confusion: A separate issue described by the SIG depends on a nearby attacker, confusion between a numeric comparison value and a passkey, and the user accepting the pairing. Bluetooth SIG security notice
  • Legacy PIN pairing: The SIG describes an impersonation issue for legacy BR/EDR PIN-code pairing under specified conditions in Core Specification versions 1.0B through 5.2. It recommends Secure Simple Pairing or BR/EDR Secure Connections rather than legacy pairing. Bluetooth SIG security notice

Why a pairing code should not be reused

For modern pairing, use “passkey” rather than treating it as a permanent Bluetooth password. The Bluetooth SIG’s Core Specification 6.0 Security Specification says: “The Passkey should be generated randomly during each pairing procedure and not be reused from a previous procedure. Static Passkeys should not be used since they can compromise the security of the link.” Bluetooth SIG Core Specification 6.0

A code printed on or assigned to a particular accessory may be part of that device’s documented setup process; it is not a master password you can apply to all Bluetooth connections. If a prompt or code does not match the pairing flow you expected, stop and check the device maker’s instructions rather than guessing.
