Bluetooth TV audio can fall behind or run ahead of the picture because the TV and audio device process and buffer sound on a separate timing path from video. Try the TV’s own Bluetooth Delay or A/V Sync controls first, then reconnect the device if the mismatch develops during use. The right menu and available fixes depend on your exact TV and audio-device models.
Why Bluetooth TV audio gets out of sync
A TV processes video and audio along different paths. Bluetooth adds a wireless transmission and buffering step, while the receiving headphones, speaker, or soundbar may process the audio differently from the TV’s video. The result is that sound can arrive before or after the matching image.

The Bluetooth SIG explains that Bluetooth Classic Audio uses asynchronous transport and may require buffers that add delay. LE Audio uses isochronous channels to reduce the need for buffering, but that design does not guarantee low or imperceptible delay in every TV-and-headphone combination. In its LE Audio overview, the Bluetooth SIG describes the technology’s approach to latency. Its Introducing Bluetooth LE Audio document uses a 200 ms lip-sync mismatch as an illustrative example, not a universal threshold or a statistic about how often TV viewers experience delay.

Wireless interference is another possibility, but it should be tested rather than assumed to be the cause.

How to troubleshoot Bluetooth audio delay
1. Look for a TV sync control
In the TV’s audio settings, look for Bluetooth Delay, A/V Sync, or a similarly named audio-output control. Adjust it in small steps while watching dialogue, since the useful direction and amount depend on whether sound leads or trails the picture.
Sony documents a Bluetooth Delay setting for a specific BRAVIA 6 model, with a range of 0–500 and a default of 280. Those values are specific to that model’s guidance, not a universal scale. Sony also advises enabling A/V Sync for a specified BRAVIA 9 situation where having it off can delay Bluetooth A2DP output. On that setup, Multi-View or Game Mode may prevent the option from being enabled. Check the manual for your exact TV before relying on these controls; menu names and behavior vary.

2. Disconnect and reconnect if the delay grows
If audio starts in sync but drifts out later, disconnect the Bluetooth device and reconnect it. Sony includes this step in its guidance for the cited BRAVIA 6 setup when delay increases after extended use. Reconnecting is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that a persistent compatibility issue is fixed.
3. Check device compatibility and software
Confirm that the TV supports Bluetooth audio output and that the TV and receiving device support a compatible Bluetooth profile. Sony identifies A2DP for supported combinations, but warns that it does not guarantee operation with every Bluetooth device. Its guidance for the covered TVs also specifies SBC transmission rather than AAC, aptX, or LDAC. Codec support alone does not establish that a pair will stay in sync, so verify the exact models and supported settings in their manuals. Check both devices for available firmware updates as well.

4. Test for wireless interference
If the connection is also interrupted or unstable, try moving the audio device closer to the TV and reducing nearby wireless activity. Sony lists interference as a possible contributor to transmission delay. If the timing mismatch remains unchanged, focus on the TV’s sync settings and device compatibility rather than treating interference as a confirmed diagnosis.
5. Switch to TV speakers or a wired connection if needed
For persistent delay, Sony recommends using the TV speakers or a wired HDMI or digital optical connection in the cited situations. A wired path avoids Bluetooth transmission, but it requires compatible ports and supported audio formats on both devices. Check the TV and audio-system manuals before buying a cable. Optical is an option only when both devices have optical audio ports; an HDMI cable likewise requires a compatible audio-return setup.

Choosing between Bluetooth and a wired connection
The practical choice depends on the specific equipment, not on a universal claim that one connection always works best.
- Keep Bluetooth if the TV offers a useful sync adjustment and your audio device supports the TV’s Bluetooth audio profile and settings.
- Try optical if both devices have compatible optical ports and you are willing to use a cable instead of Bluetooth.
- Consider HDMI audio only after confirming that the TV and sound system support the appropriate audio-return connection and formats.
- Use TV speakers if you need a simple way to avoid the Bluetooth timing path and the sync problem persists.
Do not assume that buying a device advertised as low-latency will fix the mismatch: the TV and receiving device must support compatible profiles and settings, and the complete setup still needs to stay in sync.
