To access Blue Iris away from home, enable its built-in web server, configure a permitted remote route to the Blue Iris PC, and connect with UI3 in a browser or a Blue Iris mobile client. A forwarded port makes the server reachable; it does not by itself encrypt traffic or secure an account. Set up authentication and HTTPS deliberately, and check your router arrangement before exposing the service.
How do I access Blue Iris remotely?
Blue Iris includes a web server and UI3, its browser-based viewing interface. The official product page describes remote access to live cameras and recorded clips from desktop and mobile devices, with permission-based user authentication. Blue Iris also offers mobile viewing and controls for functions such as PTZ and infrared, and the product page says the system can adjust if its IP changes. See the official Blue Iris product page for the product’s current feature description.

Remote viewing requires two things: a client, such as UI3 or a mobile app, and a network path from outside your local network to the Blue Iris web server. The built-in server listens on a configured port. The manual shows port 81 as an example default in its settings interface, but that is not a value to assume for your installation. Check the port configured on your system and use the address and connection method that match your network setup.

Choose a remote viewing client
| Client | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| UI3 in a web browser | Viewing Blue Iris from a desktop or mobile browser, including live cameras and recorded clips. | Use an account with suitable permissions, and connect over HTTPS when configured. |
| Blue Iris mobile client | Mobile viewing and supported controls, including management of multiple installations and PTZ or infrared functions. | Use the appropriate server address and account permissions for the installation. |
The official materials describe these client capabilities, but do not provide a performance comparison between them. Choose based on the device and task rather than assuming one client is universally faster or more secure.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure the route through your router
Port forwarding maps an inbound port on a router to the Blue Iris web-server port on the PC running Blue Iris. The Blue Iris manual says to use TCP or “both” for the router protocol. Router menu names and behavior vary by manufacturer and firmware, so consult your router’s instructions for the exact screens.
- Find the Blue Iris web-server port. In Blue Iris, check the web-server settings and note the configured listening port. The manual’s port 81 example is illustrative, not a required setting.
- Identify the Blue Iris PC on the local network. The forwarding rule must direct inbound traffic to that computer, not to another device. Keep the destination aligned with the PC’s current local-network address.
- Create a router forwarding rule. Map the remote-facing port you intend to use to the Blue Iris PC and its web-server port, using TCP or “both” as described in the manual.
- Connect using the matching address and port. If a port is not the address’s standard web port, the manual illustrates specifying it after a colon. Use your actual external address or hostname and configured port, not the manual’s example values.
UPnP can sometimes request router rules automatically, but the manual notes that it may be disabled as a security measure or may not leave a persistent rule. If the rule is absent or stops working, check the router configuration and set up forwarding there rather than assuming UPnP succeeded.

If there is more than one router
When the Blue Iris PC is behind multiple routers, traffic may need to be forwarded through each device in sequence before it reaches the PC. A rule on only the outer router may not be enough if another router still separates that device from the Blue Iris computer. The manual identifies this multi-router arrangement as requiring configuration in series; the exact steps depend on your topology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProtect the connection and accounts
Reachability and security are separate. Forwarding makes a service available from outside the local network, but it does not encrypt the connection or substitute for authentication. Blue Iris 6 supports HTTPS/SSL. Its Version 6 overview says server traffic over a LAN or the Internet can be encrypted using either a self-generated certificate or a certificate signed by a certificate authority (CA). The overview describes a CA-signed certificate as globally trusted, unlike a self-signed certificate, which can lead a browser to display a trust warning. Certificate setup and browser behavior depend on the certificate and configuration.

Blue Iris release information also lists digest authentication and web-server security enhancements, including required host names and banned user agents. These are documented options and changes, not a guarantee that every protection is enabled by default. Review the settings for your installed version and configure authentication and HTTPS rather than relying on port forwarding alone. Current release information is on the Blue Iris updates page.
- Create accounts with permissions appropriate to each user’s role; avoid giving every viewer broader access than needed.
- Use HTTPS for remote connections when it is configured, and understand whether your certificate is self-generated or CA-signed.
- Check the web-server and authentication settings in your installed Blue Iris version; do not assume a documented option is already enabled.
- Review the router’s forwarding rules, especially if you previously relied on UPnP or have changed routers.
Check these details before troubleshooting
- Local access works, remote access does not: verify that the external route forwards to the correct Blue Iris PC and configured web-server port.
- The rule disappears or never appears: UPnP may be disabled or may not preserve the rule; check and configure forwarding in the router.
- You use more than one router: confirm that forwarding is configured through the devices in sequence.
- A browser warns about certificate trust: check which certificate is configured. Blue Iris documentation distinguishes self-generated certificates from CA-signed certificates.
- A user can connect but cannot see or control what they need: review that account’s assigned permissions and the capabilities of the selected client.
For version-specific changes, check the official updates page: Blue Iris 6.1.3.9 is listed there with a release date of 7 October 2026. Router labels and behavior remain model- and firmware-dependent; the manual’s examples should not be copied as universal network settings. The reviewed official sources do not establish one universally preferred network topology or require a particular remote-access method beyond the available server, client, authentication, encryption, and routing options.
