The practical route is to use a computer to prepare a compatible video file from a source you’re entitled to process, then play it on the iPad from local storage or over a network. An authorized streaming or digital-copy option may be simpler when one is available for your title.
Can I play a Blu-ray on my iPad?
Apple documents connecting supported external storage to iPad, but that does not establish support for reading or playing an optical Blu-ray disc. The workable file-based approach is to prepare a compatible video file on a computer, then transfer it to the iPad or stream it from a computer or network storage. Apple’s external-storage guidance and USB-C connection guidance describe storage and display connections, not direct optical-disc playback.

How do I watch my Blu-ray movies on an iPad?
Prepare a compatible video file on a computer
HandBrake can open supported Blu-ray sources and convert video to formats such as MP4, MKV, or WebM. That does not mean it can open every disc: HandBrake explicitly says it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection. Whether you can access or copy a particular disc depends on its protection and your rights under the laws that apply to you. See HandBrake’s source-opening documentation.
Choose an output setting suited to the player and device. HandBrake’s official presets include an iPad option called Apple 720p30 Surround; it is one possible target, not a guarantee of the best choice for every iPad or viewing preference. Transfer the file to iPad storage or an external drive
Move the finished file to the iPad and open it with a player app, or keep it on compatible external storage attached to the iPad. Apple lists APFS, encrypted APFS, HFS+, exFAT, FAT32, and FAT for external storage. The drive must have a single data partition; some hard drives need external power. Check your iPad’s port and model before choosing a cable or adapter, since USB-C and Lightning models use different connections.

Choose a player for the file and workflow
VLC for iPadOS supports common video formats, file synchronization and downloads, Wi-Fi transfer, and network file servers such as SMB and NFS. VideoLAN also lists MKV playback, multiple audio tracks, and subtitles. Its iPad app is described as free and open source. Details are on VideoLAN’s VLC for iOS and iPadOS page.

Can I stream a movie file from my computer instead?
Yes, if you have a compatible video file on a computer or NAS and a player configured to access it over your local network. VLC documents network playback through file servers and UPnP; Infuse lists connections to computers, NAS devices, and media servers. This avoids copying each movie onto the iPad, but playback depends on your network, server configuration, and the file’s compatibility. Neither app’s documentation guarantees every setup will work.
Can I use a streaming service or digital copy?
If an authorized streaming service or a redemption option supplied with your disc offers the title, use its iPad app and follow that provider’s rules for downloads and offline viewing. Availability, region, account requirements, and offline rights vary by title and provider, so check the specific offer rather than assuming a disc includes a usable iPad copy.

What should I check if the video won’t play?
- Confirm the transfer finished. Check that the complete file is present on the iPad or connected drive.
- Check the storage connection. Verify that the iPad model, port, adapter, drive format, partitioning, and power meet Apple’s requirements. Some hard drives need external power.
- Check the player and file. Make sure the app supports the file’s container, codecs, and audio or subtitle tracks. Feature availability can differ by app tier.
- Revisit the output settings. If you prepared the file with HandBrake, try a preset suited to the playback device; presets trade compatibility and output settings against encoding time.
Can I connect an external Blu-ray drive to an iPad?
Apple’s published iPad guidance covers compatible external storage and display connections, not direct Blu-ray-drive playback. Don’t treat a USB-C port, adapter, or external drive as evidence that the iPad can read a disc. In the file-based workflow, an optical drive belongs at the computer step; a compatible flash drive or SSD can carry the resulting video file to the iPad.

Can VLC play Blu-ray on iPad?
VLC can play supported video files on iPad, including formats such as MKV, and can access files through documented transfer and network options. That is different from playing a Blu-ray disc directly in an external optical drive. The file must be accessible and compatible, and VLC does not make copy-protected discs readable.

Copyright and copy protection
HandBrake says it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection and advises users not to copy material unless they own it or have a right to do so. Copyright exceptions and anti-circumvention rules vary by jurisdiction and circumstances; do not assume that copying a disc for personal viewing is lawful everywhere. If your rights are unclear, consult a qualified legal adviser.
Watch on a television instead
If the goal is a larger screen, Apple documents video output from compatible iPads through suitable USB-C-to-HDMI adapters. Model and adapter affect availability and resolution.
