Bloomberg has made ASKB, its conversational AI interface for the Bloomberg Terminal, generally available to financial professionals as of October 15, 2026. ASKB is designed to answer questions using Bloomberg’s market intelligence alongside a firm’s permissioned chats, watchlists, worksheets, research and files—turning the Terminal from a place to search for information into a conversational layer across the investment workflow.
What Bloomberg ASKB is
ASKB is Bloomberg’s conversational and agentic AI layer for Terminal users, not a standalone consumer chatbot. It coordinates Bloomberg AI agents across structured and unstructured market data, news, research, documents and analytics. When a client permits it, the system can also use that firm’s proprietary material and professional conversations.

The October 15, 2026 launch moves ASKB from beta to general availability. Bloomberg’s earlier April 16, 2026 roadmap described an expanding engine embedded in portfolio, risk, research-management and other Terminal workflows. Bloomberg Global Head of Core Terminal Products Wayne Barlow said the goal is to bring “an investor’s unique professional context together with Bloomberg’s market intelligence, in one conversation.”
Bloomberg Chief Technology Officer Shawn Edwards summarized the strategy this way: “This isn’t Bloomberg building on AI. It’s AI built on Bloomberg.”

What changed at general availability
Search across Instant Bloomberg conversations
Users can ask questions in plain language about their own Instant Bloomberg (IB) chats. ASKB can return the relevant conversation and cite the source chat. When enabled, it can draw on up to three months of a client’s chat history. Bloomberg says approximately 40 million IB chats are exchanged each day, making conversation search a potentially significant research surface for firms that have the feature enabled.
Use Worksheets as analytical context
ASKB can analyze securities already organized in Bloomberg Worksheets. That lets a user ask questions about an existing security set rather than rebuilding the universe in a separate tool.
Question files in Bloomberg Drive
Users can ask questions about files stored in Bloomberg Drive. Files remain private to the uploader unless that person shares them with colleagues, preserving the file-level access model while making the contents searchable through the assistant.

Bring together market and firm information
The service is intended to combine Bloomberg’s licensed information with a firm’s own permissioned research context. The same conversation can therefore reference market data, news or analytics and the internal material a professional is allowed to access.
How ASKB is intended to work
- Ask in natural language. A user starts with a question instead of navigating separate Terminal functions.
- Coordinate specialized agents. Bloomberg’s AI agents select and combine relevant data, news, research, documents and analytics.
- Apply permissions. Proprietary chats and files are available only within the permissions Bloomberg and the client have configured.
- Show the evidence. Bloomberg says answers include transparent attribution to original sources. Chat results can cite the originating conversation, and file-based answers can point back to the source material.
- Expose analysis logic when applicable. For data-analysis responses, ASKB can show the underlying Bloomberg Query Language (BQL) code, giving technically minded users a way to inspect how a result was produced.
These controls address a central problem with financial AI: a fluent answer is not enough if an analyst cannot establish where it came from, whether the source was permitted, or how a calculation was generated.
Where ASKB fits in the investment process
| Workflow | What Bloomberg has described |
|---|---|
| Discovery | Conversational search across Bloomberg information and, where enabled, a firm’s own chats and files. |
| Research | Use Bloomberg News, curated external media, sell-side research and internal documents in one interaction. |
| Portfolio and risk | Roadmap integrations include PORT Desktop and PORT Enterprise, with ASKB positioned for portfolio and risk workflows. |
| Research management | Integration is planned with Research Management Solutions Enterprise and related research processes. |
| Monitoring | Bloomberg’s roadmap includes automated morning-news and research tasks. |
| Security analysis | Question securities in existing Worksheets and inspect BQL for applicable data-analysis answers. |
| Earnings and repeatable work | The broader strategy targets recurring analysis, news monitoring and other repeatable Terminal tasks rather than one-off question answering. |
Barlow described this direction as a transition “from an era of data discovery to an era of institutional intelligence.” That wording reflects the product’s emphasis on retained context and repeatable workflows, not merely a faster search box.

Why Bloomberg’s data scale matters
Bloomberg says its system can draw on a large, continuously updated information base:

- More than 1.1 million curated news items daily from the web, social media and other sources.
- Sell-side research from more than 1,200 providers.
- Approximately 40 million Instant Bloomberg chats each day.
Bloomberg also says it has built and used AI in finance since 2009. Those figures explain the company’s pitch: ASKB is meant to connect a large licensed information estate with the narrower, highly valuable context held inside an investment firm.
Is Bloomberg Terminal getting a ChatGPT-style interface?
In conversational terms, yes: users can ask questions in ordinary language and receive a synthesized response. In product terms, ASKB is narrower and more institutional than a general-purpose chatbot. It is embedded in the Bloomberg Terminal, operates against Bloomberg’s financial content and connected client material, and is designed to support portfolio, risk, research and monitoring workflows.

- It is made up of premium quality material.
That distinction matters for access and cost. ASKB is a commercial institutional service for Bloomberg customers, not a free public application. The announcement does not provide a consumer tier or a standalone public price.

Attribution instead of unsupported prose
Bloomberg says responses include transparent attribution to original sources. Cited chats, documents and passages give an analyst a route back to the underlying evidence.

Permission-aware private content
Client material is not described as universally visible. Bloomberg says Drive files remain private unless the uploader shares them, and ASKB’s use of proprietary content is permissioned. Firms should still verify their own access policies and retention requirements before enabling chat-history or document features.
Inspectable calculations
Where a response involves Bloomberg data analysis, optional visibility into the BQL code can help a user check the query rather than treating the numerical result as an opaque prediction.
What remains important for buyers and administrators
- Access model: ASKB is tied to Bloomberg Terminal and institutional entitlements.
- Data permissions: Chat history, Worksheets and Drive content depend on client configuration and sharing rights.
- Workflow coverage: The roadmap names PORT, Research Management Solutions Enterprise, portfolios, watchlists and automated tasks, but availability can depend on the relevant Bloomberg products and rollout.
- Auditability: Source citations and BQL visibility are useful controls, but professionals remain responsible for validating material decisions.
- Cross-device use: Bloomberg’s stated roadmap focuses on Terminal workflows; the announcement does not establish a separate mobile feature set.
What this means for financial professionals
ASKB’s practical promise is context reduction: an analyst may not need to remember which chat, worksheet or internal file contains a detail before asking for it. The benefit is greatest when a firm already uses Bloomberg heavily and has valuable internal research trapped across conversations and documents.
The trade-off is that ASKB is not a replacement for judgment, permission governance or source review. Its usefulness depends on the quality of the firm’s underlying material, the entitlements attached to each source and the user’s ability to inspect cited evidence. General availability makes the interface broadly deployable to eligible Bloomberg customers, while the deeper agentic integrations described in the April roadmap continue to define how far the product can extend beyond question answering.
