It can be played on PS5 through backward compatibility, but PlayStation’s listing does not describe a separate native PS5 edition or a PS5 upgrade entitlement. The named editions include the base game, a Complete Edition Bundle, and Bloodborne The Old Hunters Edition; availability and package contents can vary by region and format.
When did Bloodborne come out, and what platform is it for?
PlayStation lists Bloodborne as a PS4 game with a U.S. release date of March 24, 2015. Its product description sets the scene in Yharnam: “Hunt your nightmares as you search for answers in the ancient city of Yharnam, now cursed with a strange endemic illness spreading through the streets like wildfire.” This is PlayStation’s product copy, not a quote attributed to an individual. Can you play Bloodborne on PS5?
Yes. PlayStation says the PS4 game is playable on PS5, with two qualifications: the system may need the latest system software, and some features available on PS4 may be absent. That is a backward-compatibility statement, not confirmation of a distinct PS5 version or an upgrade entitlement. PlayStation Store listing

#1 Best Overall
- Bloodborne Game of The Year
- If Bloodborne needs to be summed up, then the prevalent themes would be: exploring the fearsome unknown, intense life-and-death battles, and a familiar yet uniquely new online experience
- From the makers of the infamous Souls series, From Software's PS4 exclusive will attempt to take the tried and tested formula of giving players a sense of achievement to the next stage - especially when Miyazaki, the original creator of the Souls series is back at the helm
- What is promised is a harrowing experience like no other, and fans of tension, discovery, and straight up fun will sure to be excited to play Bloodborne
- If you have played the previous Souls games, then this one is a definite must buy
Which Bloodborne editions are listed?
Official listings document three edition names, but do not establish a complete worldwide history of packages, preorder bonuses, or current retail stock.
| Edition or listing | What the sources establish | Format and availability qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bloodborne | PlayStation’s U.S. listing presents the base game. | Listed as a PS4 game; check the relevant regional store or retailer for current availability. PlayStation Store |
| Complete Edition Bundle | PlayStation’s U.S. Store listing presents a Complete Edition Bundle and references the Bloodborne Official Digital Guide. | The listing establishes the bundle name, not current pricing or availability in every region. Confirm the included content on the store page for your territory. PlayStation Store |
| Bloodborne The Old Hunters Edition | FromSoftware’s official catalog names this edition and identifies PlayStation 4. | The catalog confirms the name and platform, not current physical stock or identical contents across regions. FromSoftware catalog |
Does the PS4 disc work on PS5, and is there a PS5 upgrade?
Sony’s 2015 sales announcement confirms that Blu-ray Disc copies were sold, alongside PlayStation Store downloads. A PS4 disc is therefore a documented purchase format, though a particular retailer’s current listing, condition, region, and edition need to be checked. Sony Computer Entertainment sales announcement

- Bloodborne - Game Of The Year Edition [PS4]
PlayStation’s cited listing confirms PS5 playability with possible missing PS4 features; it does not describe a separate PS5 upgrade. Do not assume that buying a disc or digital copy grants a distinct PS5 edition. For a disc-based copy, also check that the PS5 you intend to use accepts PS4 Blu-ray discs.
How to choose a copy
- Want the simplest option? Compare the base game listing in your region with legitimate retailers, and verify whether the offer is a disc or digital license.
- Want a named edition? Compare the listed content on the actual regional store or package. The edition name alone does not establish that every historical bonus or content item is included.
- Buying a disc for PS5 play? Confirm you have a disc-compatible PS5 and treat the game as a PS4 title running through compatibility, not as a PS5 upgrade.
- Considering a digital bundle? Check the current PlayStation Store page for contents and terms. Prices and discounts can change, and the cited U.S. listing is not a guarantee of the same offer elsewhere.
What does the early sales figure mean?
Sony Computer Entertainment reported more than 1 million units worldwide as of April 5, 2015. The figure combined estimated Blu-ray Disc sell-through and PlayStation Store downloads; it is an early sales milestone, not a lifetime total. Sony Computer Entertainment sales announcement
