Neither platform is a universal winner: the better choice depends on how much control, portability, distribution, and monetization flexibility you need.
How Blogger and Medium differ
Blogger is built around a blog you configure: you choose an available blog address, adjust its design and settings, manage reader or author access, and publish posts. Medium is built around stories published on your profile, with the option to publish through a publication. A story in a publication remains on the author’s profile, credits the author, and continues to belong to the writer; its URL changes to include the publication name or domain. Which platform gives you more control?
Blogger: a configurable blog site
Blogger lets you change a blog’s design and manage who can write or read it. You can edit and schedule posts and organize them with labels. Its settings also cover search visibility, feeds, and redirects, giving you more direct control over how the blog is configured. See Blogger’s settings guide and post management documentation.
Medium: stories on a profile or in a publication
Medium’s structure is centered on stories, an author profile, and optional publications. Publishing in a publication can add a distribution route through the feeds and digests of the author’s followers and the publication’s followers, while the story still appears on the author’s profile. It is a platform feature, not a promise of reach or search performance. Medium’s publication guide describes the behavior.
Can you use your own domain?
Both services support custom domains, but their setup requirements differ. Check the current cost of a domain and any service membership you need before deciding.

A custom domain gives you a branded address, but does not by itself make your content or audience independent of the platform. Domain setup and data portability are separate considerations.
How portable is your content?
Blogger has a documented XML backup and import route
Blogger settings support exporting blog posts and comments to an XML backup and importing XML content. That is a concrete way to keep a copy and move supported content. It does not guarantee a one-click migration to Medium with identical formatting, links, or behavior. Details are in Blogger’s backup and import documentation.
Do not assume a complete Medium account export
The Medium documentation cited here explains publication behavior and story rights, but does not establish an equivalent complete round-trip export for an entire account. If portability is essential, verify the export options currently available to your account rather than assuming a seamless transfer between platforms.

Blogger: ads are possible, but approval and income are not guaranteed
Blogger supports AdSense and other advertising options, including third-party ad code through layout tools and ads.txt configuration. AdSense approval is not automatic: a blog must meet applicable eligibility requirements and comply with AdSense policies and restrictions. Neither ad placement nor approval guarantees earnings. Medium: Partner Program earnings depend on eligibility and activity
To join Medium’s Partner Program, writers must have an active Medium membership, at least one published story, a complete profile, be at least 18, and reside and have a bank account in a supported country. The eligible-country list can change, so check Medium’s current eligibility requirements before relying on access.

Eligible writers can paywall individual stories. Earnings depend on eligible member activity and other factors Medium describes, including reading or listening time, engagement, distribution, and discovery source; Medium determines the portion of membership revenue used for payments. Its terms effective June 1, 2026 describe performance-based payments, and the earnings model may be updated. There is no fixed rate or guaranteed income. Consult Medium’s Partner Program terms and earnings calculation documentation. Medium says, “A read is counted when the reader has spent 30 seconds or more on your story.” That is a program metric, not a universal measure of readership.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Blogger if you want blog-specific settings and design controls, an XML backup and import route, or the option to place ads subject to the relevant requirements.
- Choose Medium if you prefer publishing stories on a profile or through publications, value its documented follower-feed and digest distribution, and meet the Partner Program requirements if monetization is a goal.
- Prioritize a custom domain and portability? Both support custom domains, but their setup prerequisites differ. Blogger documents XML content backup and import; do not assume that a domain alone—or an undocumented export path—makes a platform-independent site or audience.
These recommendations follow from documented platform features, not comparative hands-on testing. Review current service requirements and terms before committing, especially if your choice depends on Medium membership, Partner Program eligibility, or advertising approval.
