Blizzard says WoW: Forever will build on vanilla World of Warcraft while preserving its core design, pacing and tone. The team says it judges proposed changes against four design pillars—and aims for updated visuals that feel at home in the vanilla era rather than looking either exactly like 2004 or like modern WoW.

TechRadar reports that Blizzard named four pillars as the framework it uses to assess proposed changes:
- Nurture and Protect Social Experiences
- Approachable and Familiar
- World as the Main Character
- Journey before destination
The team said the pillars took shape through playing different versions of Classic and are firmly rooted in vanilla WoW. It described them as a practical filter: if an idea does not support the pillars, the team does not proceed with it. That gives the project a stated basis for evaluating changes, but the report does not spell out measurable criteria for applying each pillar.

How does Blizzard say it will stay true to vanilla WoW?
The team’s stated goal is to build on the original vanilla world without losing its core design, pacing or tone. As quoted by TechRadar, Blizzard said: “The philosophy is largely to take the original ‘vanilla’ WoW world and building on top of it in a way that stays true to the core design, pacing, and tone of the original game.”
The pillars connect that goal to the game’s social play, familiar feel, world and sense of progression. But “classic” is not a simple checklist: a change may feel faithful to one player and not to another. Blizzard’s reported approach is to use the four pillars when considering additions, rather than rely only on the label.

What is the visual direction?
Blizzard described a middle ground between assets that look as if they were made in 2004 and visuals rendered at modern WoW fidelity. The team said it wants a vanilla-era level of fidelity, with Vanilla, The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King cited as examples of a plausible range. It also said updated lighting and rendering mean new assets must work alongside older assets and newer technology.

“WoW as you remember it, not as it was” captures the reported aim, but it is not a promise to reproduce every player’s memories. The team put the boundary this way: “The goal here is not to create assets that look like they were made in 2004; it’s also not a goal to create assets at the fidelity level of modern WoW.”

What did Blizzard say about bots and real-money trading?
TechRadar also reports that the team is monitoring real-money trading and working to mitigate botting, with possible permanent bans. The report gives no enforcement details, scale estimate or fuller policy statement, so it does not establish how often bans may occur or how Blizzard will apply them.
