He has also named defense and life sciences as sectors reached by Blackstone’s thematic investing approach, but his public comments reviewed here do not explain those bets in comparable detail.
What Jon Gray says Blackstone is betting on
Gray describes looking for businesses in “good neighborhoods”: markets where long-term trends may support growth and help investors spot opportunities in adjacent businesses. In an interview with Semafor published August 27, 2026, and updated August 28, he used data centers as an example. Investing in that area can give Blackstone insight into hyperscaler demand and related needs, including contractors and cooling equipment.

That is Gray’s account of Blackstone’s approach, not evidence that every investment exposed to a strong trend will succeed. He says investors need to keep testing their thesis rather than become attached to it. The distinction matters: a promising theme can reveal possible investments, but it does not establish their future cash flows or returns.

Blackstone’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies Gray as the firm’s President and Chief Operating Officer, appointed to those roles in 2018. It also says he serves on the Management Committee and nearly all of Blackstone’s investment committees.

Electricity is the most developed part of the thesis
At Blackstone’s Annual LP Meeting on May 19, 2026, Gray linked rising electricity needs not only to data centers but also to robots, autonomous vehicles and reindustrialization. He described several parts of the energy and power system as investment opportunities: pipelines, utilities, renewable generation, electrical equipment and utility services.
“If you think about power and energy, that’s a pretty easy thing to believe in, which we do it in a number of ways,” Gray said. The statement is an attributed management view, not a guarantee. Blackstone’s account of the meeting cautions that views may not come to pass and trends can reverse.

Blackstone’s Fall 2025 “Powering the Future” presentation supplies market context for this conviction. It describes a $23 trillion investment opportunity in energy and power through 2040, attributing that estimate to McKinsey & Company’s “The Infrastructure Moment.” The figure is a market estimate reproduced in Blackstone’s presentation; it is not a forecast of Blackstone’s returns or proof that the entire amount is available to any one investor.

That is a forecast, not measured growth. The presentation’s publication by Blackstone and the underlying sources it names should be kept distinct: Blackstone presents the figures, while McKinsey and Princeton Net-Zero America are credited for the respective estimates.

How much the sources establish about each sector

Gray’s reference to defense and life sciences supports saying that he named them as examples; it does not support a more detailed account of why Blackstone chose either sector. The available comments also mention trends such as growth in India’s middle class, but do not provide enough detail to turn that observation into a sector-by-sector investment thesis.
The risks Gray says could challenge the power buildout
Gray’s electricity thesis includes constraints as well as demand. At the 2026 LP meeting, he pointed to possible overbuilding, political pushback and shortages of power and equipment that could impede construction. These are different risks: demand may not justify all planned capacity, projects may face opposition, or limited supplies may delay the infrastructure intended to meet demand.

He also described uncertainty for software and white-collar businesses as AI changes their economics, with lower valuation multiples and markdowns possible. Semafor likewise reported his concern about uncertainty around future cash flows from fast-moving AI investments. These are Gray’s assessments of potential disruption, not established outcomes for every affected company.

The evidence is strongest and most specific for electricity: Gray names the infrastructure categories, while Blackstone’s presentation provides attributed demand and investment estimates. Those figures help explain why the theme attracts attention, but they do not settle whether demand will meet forecasts, whether projects can be built economically or how any particular investment will perform.

For defense and life sciences, the evidence is narrower: they are examples Gray cited in describing Blackstone’s search for businesses benefiting from thematic tailwinds. Without named investments or performance data in the interview excerpt, readers should not infer the size, composition or success of Blackstone’s exposure in either field.
