To use Blackboard Collaborate, open the session link provided by your instructor or institution, check that your browser meets the institution’s requirements, then follow the controls and instructions shown in the session. There is no universal course-menu path or guaranteed set of controls: access and available features can vary by institution and moderator.
Before you join
- Find the current session link. Use the link in your course or invitation, and follow the instructor’s directions. Blackboard installations do not all use the same menu path.
- Check browser readiness. Blackboard Learn guidance says session cookies and JavaScript are required. Consult your institution’s browser-support information and use its browser checker, if available; support can vary with the Learn version. See Blackboard Learn browser support.
- If joining from the Blackboard mobile app, expect a browser handoff. Blackboard says Collaborate opens in a separate browser window from the app. Feature behavior may differ across mobile devices. See Blackboard’s mobile-app guidance for Collaborate.
Join the session
- Open the course or invitation link supplied by your instructor or institution.
- Allow the session to open in the browser. If you started in the Blackboard mobile app, it will hand Collaborate off to a separate browser window.
- Read the on-screen prompts and any moderator instructions before taking part. The exact controls and their availability depend on the session.
Take part once you are in
Use the controls visible in your session and follow the moderator’s directions for speaking, video, chat, or sharing content. Historical Blackboard Collaborate Ultra materials describe audio and video, chat, and content sharing, but they do not establish today’s exact button names, locations, or steps. Do not rely on an old walkthrough for current interface instructions; consult your institution’s current Collaborate help page if you need directions for a particular control.

If you cannot get in
- Confirm that you are using the current course or invitation link and that the session is active.
- Check that your browser allows session cookies and JavaScript, and review your institution’s browser requirements.
- If the link still does not work, contact your instructor or institution’s support desk. They can verify course access and session availability.
Desktop browser or mobile app?
The Blackboard mobile app does not keep Collaborate inside the app; it opens the session in a separate browser window. Choose a device and browser supported by your institution, and check that the controls you need work in that setup. Blackboard’s cited mobile guidance establishes the browser handoff, not complete feature parity between mobile and desktop.

What older Collaborate documentation can—and cannot—tell you
Blackboard’s Collaborate Ultra release notes are historical, dated May 2015. They describe a browser-based experience without downloads and report a minimum viable participation bandwidth of 128 kbps download at that time. That figure is not a current bandwidth requirement, and the old release notes should not be used to infer current technical requirements or interface steps.
