A Cyberpunk 2077 black screen can mean four different failures: the game never reaches its menu, a save or scene will not render, the game still runs with audio but no picture, or the entire display loses signal. Identify which one you have before changing files. The safest order is to restart, update, test an unmodded game and another save, verify files, remove overlays, address drivers, and only then reset configuration or perform a clean installation.
Identify what “black screen” means
Answer these questions before troubleshooting:
- Is there audio or controller input? Audio and input usually mean the game is running and the problem is rendering, display mode, HDR, an overlay, or a driver.
- Can Alt+Tab return to Windows? If so, the game window may be hung rather than the whole PC.
- Does the monitor say “No signal,” does Windows crash, or does the PC reboot? Treat that as a display, driver, power, thermal, or hardware failure—not just a damaged game installation.
- When does it happen? Before the menu, while loading a save, or after entering gameplay.
- Does it affect every save? One affected save points toward save or mod content; every save points more toward the installation, settings, driver, or platform.
- Did it begin after a game, Windows, GPU-driver, or mod update? That timing determines which branch to test first.
Safe first steps on any platform
- Close the game completely and restart the PC or console. Do not repeatedly force-close it while a save is writing.
- Install the latest game and system updates. CD PROJEKT RED’s PC support form currently lists version 2.31 as the latest selectable PC version (observed August 18, 2026); platform version numbers and release timing can differ: CDPR support.
- Test a different recent save, then a new game or fresh manual save. Do not overwrite your only working save.
- Check whether other demanding games also lose video output. A system-wide failure needs hardware or platform troubleshooting.
PC: work through fixes in this order
1. Remove mods, injectors, and launch parameters
Test a completely unmodded launch before reinstalling anything. Disable REDmod content, script extenders, framework libraries, ReShade, DLL injectors, trainers, and gameplay or cosmetic mods. A mod manager toggle may leave files in the game directory, and an update can make an otherwise harmless framework incompatible. CD PROJEKT RED says modified installations are unsupported and recommends a clean installation without mods: official mod-content guidance. Community documentation recommends updating core frameworks and checking every mod after an update, but that is community guidance, not a guaranteed fix: CDPR Modding Documentation.

Removing a mod can itself make a mod-dependent save fail. First prove that a clean installation reaches the menu and loads a new game; only then test backed-up saves. Do not reinstall mods until that test succeeds.

If REDlauncher hangs or prevents the game from starting, run Steam, Epic Games, or GOG Galaxy as administrator, remove custom launch parameters, and delete the REDlauncher folder at %localappdata%ProgramsCD Projekt Red. These are CDPR’s recommended REDlauncher steps: REDlauncher troubleshooting. This is most relevant when the launcher fails; it is not a universal remedy for a black screen that appears only after loading into the game.

3. Verify the game files
Use the store’s repair function:

CDPR notes that corrupted files can cause crashes, graphical glitches, and launch failures: file-verification instructions. Verification does not remove every leftover mod file, broken local setting, or damaged launcher cache.
4. Disable overlays and background utilities
Temporarily disable Discord, Steam/GOG/Epic overlays, GPU overlays, recording or streaming tools, RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities, overclocking tools, and third-party antivirus or anti-malware protection. CDPR recommends disabling overlays and unnecessary applications while investigating crashes and performance problems: crash guidance and performance guidance. Re-enable them one at a time after the game works.
5. Update or roll back the GPU driver
Perform a clean installation using your GPU vendor’s installer. If the black screen began immediately after a driver update, test the previous driver; CDPR specifically recommends that controlled rollback. Return CPU, GPU, and RAM settings to stock—CDPR warns that overclocking or underclocking can cause crashes: launch guidance and crash guidance.

6. If audio works but the picture is black
Use standard Windows window controls to leave fullscreen, then test windowed or borderless mode if the menu is reachable. Temporarily disconnect a second display and disable HDR, advanced upscaling, or frame-generation features. These are diagnostic measures, not guaranteed CDPR fixes. If the menu remains inaccessible, prioritize mods, launcher, file verification, and driver testing.
7. Reset local configuration carefully
Back up saves before removing local settings so the game can rebuild them. Do not delete save files. Expect to choose resolution, HDR, and graphics options again. CDPR’s clean-install page confirms the save location but does not define one universal settings filename, so avoid deleting folders unless you have identified them for your current build: clean-install guidance.
When the monitor loses signal or the PC reboots
A “No signal” message, blue screen, hard reboot, or shutdown is not an ordinary game-file problem. Check whether another demanding game reproduces it, test another cable, port, or monitor, monitor temperatures and power behavior, and review Windows Reliability History or crash logs. Keep all hardware clocks at stock and clean-install the GPU driver. If the failure extends beyond Cyberpunk 2077, contact the GPU, system, display, or power-supply manufacturer.

PlayStation 5 and PlayStation troubleshooting
- Power the console down completely; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Wait until all lights are off, unplug the power cable, wait at least two minutes, reconnect it, and start the console.
- Confirm game and system updates, then test another save or a new game.
CDPR says this cache-clearing power cycle does not erase games or data and may help with crashes, performance problems, and black screens: PlayStation cache instructions. Do not delete saved data without a backup or confirmed cloud synchronization. If other games also lose video output, escalate to PlayStation support. PS4 guidance and patch behavior are not necessarily identical to PS5; use the platform-specific support area: PlayStation support index.
Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting
Power cycle (all Xbox consoles)
- Power down from the controller or console button.
- Unplug the power cable for at least two minutes.
- Reconnect it and turn the Xbox on.
Clear persistent storage (Xbox Series X only)
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system → Settings → Devices & Connections → Blu-ray → Persistent Storage.
- Select Clear Persistent Storage.
CDPR says these cache procedures do not erase games, data, or saves and may help with crashes, performance issues, and black screens: Xbox cache instructions. The Blu-ray procedure does not apply to every Xbox model. Test another save and check whether other games lose video; use Xbox support if the failure is system-wide. - Uninstall the game.
- Delete the remaining game folder from the Steam, GOG, or Epic installation directory.
- Delete the
Cyberpunk 2077folder from%userprofile%Saved GamesCD Projekt Redonly after confirming the backup. - Delete the
REDEngineandCD Projekt Redfolders from%userprofile%AppDataLocal. - Restart the PC.
- Install the game on an SSD without mods.
- Launch it, reach the menu, and test a new game before restoring saves.
- Restore backed-up saves and re-enable cloud saves only after the clean test succeeds.
A clean install removes leftover files; it cannot repair defective hardware, an incompatible driver, or a save that is itself damaged.

Stop repeating reinstalls when the same failure remains after a clean, unmodded test. Contact CD PROJEKT RED support with:
- Platform and storefront, operating-system version, and game version.
- Whether Phantom Liberty is installed.
- Whether the playthrough began before or after Update 2.0.
- Whether mods, trainers, console commands, or injectors were used.
- The exact stage of failure, error text, reproduction steps, and whether audio or input continues.
- Crash logs, diagnostic files, and video or screenshots where possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the black screen appear after an update?
An update can expose incompatible mods or frameworks, alter graphics settings, or leave damaged files. Test an unmodded launch, update or remove mod frameworks, verify files, and then test the driver if the timing matches a driver update.

Does verifying files remove mods?
Not necessarily. Verification repairs files tracked by the store but may leave mod files, injectors, local settings, or launcher data behind.
Will clearing the PlayStation or Xbox cache delete my saves?
CDPR says its documented PlayStation and Xbox cache procedures do not erase games, data, or saves. Do not confuse cache clearing with deleting saved data.
Why do I have audio but no picture?
The game may still be running while rendering, fullscreen, HDR, an overlay, or the graphics driver fails. Try windowed or borderless mode, disconnect a second display, disable overlays and HDR temporarily, and test the driver.

Test another recent save and a new game. If only one save fails, use an earlier backup and avoid overwriting the only working save; mod-dependent saves may need their original content.
What if the whole PC reboots?
Treat it as possible driver, power, thermal, overclocking, or hardware instability. Return hardware settings to stock, clean-install the GPU driver, test another demanding game, and seek hardware support if it persists.
