Biwin’s Mini SSD Is Smaller Than an SD Card and Rated for 3.7 GB/s

Biwin’s Mini SSD is a tiny PCIe/NVMe drive rated for sequential reads of up to 3,700 MB/s and writes of up to 3,400 MB/s. At 15 × 17 × 1.4 mm, it is smaller than a full-size SD card and roughly microSD-sized—but it is not a memory card and will not work in a standard SD or microSD slot. You need a device built for the format or a compatible reader.

What Biwin launched

Biwin announced its Mini SSD on March 7, 2025, ahead of Embedded World 2025. The name describes a complete solid-state drive in a very small package, rather than a new kind of SD card. Biwin’s product family has two versions: the BL100, aimed at OEMs and industrial or embedded-device customers, and the consumer-oriented CL100. The company also offers the RD510 reader for using the CL100 externally. Biwin’s launch announcement introduced the format; its product page describes the BL100 and the family’s specifications.

Some outside coverage calls the approximate 15 × 17 mm format “1517.” “Mini SSD” here is also distinct from the older mSATA Mini SSD name: Biwin’s drive uses PCIe and NVMe, while the older product is a different, larger form factor with a different interface. Biwin’s older mSATA product page illustrates that distinction.

How small is it?

Biwin lists the drive at 15.00 × 17.00 × 1.40 mm. That makes it much shorter than an M.2 2230 SSD, which is 30 mm long, and materially smaller than a full-size SD card. The comparison with microSD needs care: the Mini SSD is similar in length, but at 17 mm wide it is wider than a microSD card’s 11 mm. “Roughly microSD-sized” is more accurate than saying it is smaller than microSD in every dimension.

What speeds and capacities does Biwin claim?

Biwin specifies a PCIe 4.0 x2 interface and NVMe 1.4 protocol. Its maximum figures below are vendor specifications, not independently verified benchmark results. Biwin notes that actual performance varies with the host system, device and environment.

Specification Biwin’s stated figure
Sequential read Up to 3,700 MB/s
Sequential write Up to 3,400 MB/s
4K random read Up to 550K IOPS
4K random write Up to 650K IOPS
Capacities 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB
Flash 3D TLC
Maximum read/write power 2.3 W
Idle power 60 mW
Low-power PS4 state 6 mW
Endurance Up to 1,500 TBW
Warranty Three-year limited warranty
Operating temperature 0°C to +70°C
Storage temperature –40°C to +85°C
MTBF More than 1.5 million hours, claimed

The headline shorthand “3 GB/s” rounds down Biwin’s 3,700 MB/s maximum read claim. Those are peak sequential figures, not a promise that every transfer—or a long write after the drive’s cache fills—will run at that rate. The available specifications do not establish sustained-write performance across the full drive capacity. The full Mini SSD specification sheet provides Biwin’s published figures.

PCIe 4.0 x2 means two PCIe lanes, whereas many mainstream M.2 SSDs use a four-lane connection. A host that wires only one lane, or a reader limited by its bridge, cable or USB connection, can prevent the drive from reaching its rated maximum. A reader’s external transfer speed should not be treated as a measure of the drive’s full internal PCIe performance.

Why it can be faster than a regular microSD card

Ordinary microSD cards use a memory-card interface and controller; Biwin’s Mini SSD uses PCIe and the NVMe command protocol used by many computer SSDs. That is the basis for its much higher rated sequential throughput than conventional microSD storage. The real advantage still depends on the host: it must provide compatible PCIe/NVMe connectivity and enough lanes to make use of the drive.

MicroSD Express cards also use PCIe/NVMe, so the comparison is not simply “SSD versus every memory card.” Performance varies by card and host, and a device that supports only conventional UHS operation will not deliver the Express mode’s potential. Biwin’s published x2 interface specification is a comparison point, not proof that the Mini SSD will be faster in every device or workload. TechRadar’s coverage discusses the format alongside microSD Express; treat such comparisons as interface and specification context unless they come with controlled, comparable tests.

Compatibility: the slot matters more than the size

The Mini SSD is intended for a compatible Mini SSD slot. It cannot be inserted into an ordinary SD or microSD slot, and a standard M.2 socket is not automatically compatible either. Similar dimensions alone do not establish that a slot has the right connector, PCIe wiring, firmware support or mechanical clearance.

Biwin markets the format for laptops, tablets, smartphones, cameras, NAS systems, portable SSDs, handheld consoles and edge-computing devices. These are target categories, not a guarantee that any particular model supports the drive. Before buying, verify the exact device and configuration:

  • Check the manufacturer’s specification or support guidance for the exact Mini SSD or CL100 model, not just the device family name.
  • Confirm supported capacities and whether the slot is user-accessible.
  • Check whether the host provides one or two PCIe lanes and whether a firmware update is required.
  • Ask whether replacing the installed drive affects warranty coverage, and whether the device requires a particular recovery or installation process.
  • For external use or cloning, confirm that you have a compatible reader and that its connection suits your intended workload.

Biwin’s CES 2026 material says Mini SSDs had been deployed in commercially available OneXPlayer Super X, OneXPlayer X1 Air, OneXFly Apex and GPD WIN 5 systems. That is evidence of adoption in named products, not universal support across handhelds. Check the exact model and configuration before ordering. Biwin’s CES 2026 announcement lists its adoption claims, and its CL100 user guide provides installation and compatibility guidance.

Using the RD510 reader

Biwin’s RD510 is a reader for the Mini SSD format, intended to let a CL100 connect externally to a computer or mobile setup. It is useful if your device lacks an integrated slot or you need to access the drive for cloning. The reader adds another link in the performance chain: its interface, bridge electronics, cable, host port, power and thermal behavior can all limit transfers. Third-party coverage describes the RD510 as a USB4 40Gbps solution, but do not assume an external reader will reproduce the internal PCIe 4.0 x2 rating. Check the current RD510 specification sheet for the exact configuration.

Durability, heat and replacement considerations

Biwin lists IP68 dust and water resistance and drop resistance up to 3 meters. These are manufacturer claims for the product as designed and tested; the precise test conditions are not stated in the material cited here. Installing the drive in a host, using it in a reader or exposing its connector can change the protection of the overall assembly. A drop rating does not guarantee data survival after every impact, and IP68 should not be read as permission for unrestricted underwater use.

The stated operating range is 0°C to +70°C, while storage is rated from –40°C to +85°C. The maximum read/write power claim is 2.3 W, so a small package still has power and thermal needs that the host designer must manage. Biwin rates endurance up to 1,500 TBW and gives a three-year limited warranty; capacity-specific endurance details and warranty terms should be checked in the applicable product documentation before a replacement decision.

If you are replacing a drive in a handheld or other system, plan for more than the physical swap. You may need a compatible reader or second drive, cloning software or recovery media, and a way to preserve hidden recovery partitions. Biwin says it provides a CL100 data-recovery utility in its user-guide materials, but recovery software is not a substitute for a separate backup.

Is it available to buy?

As of Biwin’s official material reviewed through August 16, 2026, the CL100 is presented as the consumer model with a “Buy Now” path, while the BL100 is positioned for OEM inquiries, samples and design-in. The official pages do not establish a stable public MSRP, and retail stock can vary by region. The format has moved beyond a trade-show announcement and appears in named consumer devices, but it remains a niche, compatibility-dependent option rather than a broadly interchangeable SD-card replacement. See the CL100 product page for consumer information and the BL100 product page for the OEM-facing offering.

Which storage option fits your device?

Option Best for Advantages Trade-offs
Biwin Mini SSD Devices confirmed to have a compatible Mini SSD slot Very small package; high vendor-rated PCIe/NVMe throughput Limited ecosystem; host and reader compatibility matter
M.2 2230 NVMe SSD Devices with a standard 2230 NVMe slot More established format, easier sourcing and replacement 30 mm long and unsuitable for a Mini SSD-only slot
microSD Express Devices explicitly supporting microSD Express Removable card workflow; familiar form factor Not interchangeable with Mini SSD; results depend on card and host
Conventional microSD Devices with only a standard card slot, or media storage needs Broad device support and easy sharing Much lower throughput than Biwin’s PCIe/NVMe maximum claims

For a compatible handheld or compact system, the CL100 may make sense when internal space and faster storage matter more than a mature upgrade ecosystem. If the device supports M.2 2230, that standard is generally easier to source, replace and research. If it has only a card slot, choose a card format the device explicitly supports; the Mini SSD is not an adapter-free substitute.
