A valid 48-digit key for a different ID will not unlock the drive. Check the Microsoft account or organization account that set up the PC, then look for offline backups. If no matching key exists, Microsoft says it cannot retrieve or recreate one; avoid resetting Windows until you understand the possible data loss.
Check the recovery-key ID before entering a key
On the BitLocker recovery screen, note the first eight digits of the recovery-key ID. Then compare those digits with the ID shown beside each saved recovery key. Enter the 48-digit key associated with the matching ID—not simply the first key you find. This matters especially when an account contains multiple keys. Microsoft explains how to identify and use the key in its BitLocker recovery-key guide.

Find the key in the account or backup where it was saved
Use another phone or computer to check likely locations. The person who originally set up the PC or enabled encryption may have saved the key in their account rather than yours.
- Personal Microsoft account: Visit Microsoft’s recovery-key page, sign in, and compare the listed key ID with the one on the locked PC. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 and later displays a hint for the Microsoft account associated with the key on the recovery screen.
- Work or school device: The key may be controlled by your organization. Use its account process or contact IT; you might not have permission to view the key yourself. A device that was ever signed in to a work or school account may have its recovery key stored there.
- Offline backup: Look for a printout, a saved text file, or a USB drive used to back up the key. If the key file is on a USB drive, use another device to read it. A USB drive bought now cannot retrieve a key that was never saved to it.
Microsoft also documents device encryption in Windows, which can help explain why a Windows PC may be encrypted even if you did not manually turn on BitLocker.

Consider what caused Windows to request recovery
BitLocker can request the recovery key after a hardware, firmware, or software change. A change to startup conditions may look like a security risk to the encryption system, even when the change was authorized. If the prompt started immediately after a change, consider whether it can safely be reversed. Do not guess at BIOS or UEFI settings, particularly on a managed PC; ask the organization’s IT staff for guidance. Microsoft describes these recovery triggers in its BitLocker overview.
If recovery appears on every boot
Repeated prompts can have different causes, so this is not a general-purpose fix. Microsoft documents a specific Secure Boot case involving PXE or network boot, where the boot path uses a different Secure Boot trust path from the local Windows boot manager. For that configuration, Microsoft advises administrators to put the on-disk Windows boot manager first, disable unnecessary PXE boot, or ensure the PXE infrastructure uses the appropriate signed boot loader. See Microsoft’s Secure Boot troubleshooting guide; on a work-managed PC, have an administrator assess the configuration.

Understand the limit before considering a reset
Microsoft Support says it cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key. If no key with the matching ID is available and the triggering change cannot be undone, Microsoft’s recovery-key guidance says a Windows recovery reset may be required. A reset is not a way to recover the missing key or unlock the encrypted files.

Reset choices have different consequences: some remove apps and settings, and some also remove personal files. Review Microsoft’s guides to resetting your PC and Windows recovery options before choosing. Check every likely account and backup location first, and contact organizational IT before taking a destructive step on a managed device.

Back up the key after you regain access
Once the PC is accessible, save a recovery-key backup somewhere separate from the computer. Microsoft documents ways to back up a BitLocker recovery key, including saving it to a USB flash drive. A USB drive is useful only as a place to store a backup made in advance; it cannot restore a key that was not saved.
