Bitget says attackers breached part of its hot- and warm-wallet infrastructure on September 24, 2026, and it later revised the estimated loss from $351.6 million to about $387.5 million. Chainalysis traced some stolen XRP through a cross-chain route into Bitcoin. Analysts have assessed a possible North Korean connection, but that attribution is not confirmed. Bitget says cold wallets and private keys were not compromised; the exchange’s latest withdrawal status should be checked asset by asset.
What happened in the Bitget hack?
Bitget says its security system detected unauthorized transfers at 18:31 UTC on September 24, 2026. The exchange’s investigation describes attackers exploiting a vulnerability in a third-party security product to obtain internal access credentials, then issuing forged withdrawal instructions that bypassed risk controls. Bitget says the incident affected some hot and warm wallets, while cold wallets were unaffected and private keys were not compromised. Bitget’s incident update and investigation chronology provide its account.
Bitget initially estimated the loss at $351.6 million, then revised it to approximately $387.5 million after more complete accounting. Its later explainer rounds that figure to approximately $388 million. The higher estimate is a reconciliation of the same incident, not evidence of additional transfers after containment. Bitget says 12 hot- and warm-wallet addresses were involved, with activity across 11 blockchains.
How much was lost, and what does the XRP-to-Bitcoin trail show?
The figures describe different accounting and tracing perspectives. Bitget’s revised estimate is its assessment of the incident’s financial impact; Chainalysis reports what it traced on-chain during the first three hours.

| Source and scope | Reported figure or finding |
|---|---|
| Bitget, initial estimate | $351.6 million |
| Bitget, revised estimate after fuller accounting | Approximately $387.5 million; its later explainer rounds this to approximately $388 million |
| Chainalysis, first three hours | About $387 million across 23 transfers on Ethereum, XRP Ledger, Zcash and Tron |
Chainalysis allocated the first-three-hour transfers as 49.7% Ethereum, 40.8% XRP, 7.6% Zcash and 1.8% Tron. It reports that attackers routed stolen XRP through a cross-chain liquidity protocol and received Bitcoin on the other side. These are Chainalysis’s tracing findings, not Bitget’s accounting of all affected assets. Chainalysis’s incident analysis describes the tracing.
Is the attack confirmed to be linked to North Korea?
No. A North Korean connection has been assessed by analysts, but the available attribution is not conclusive. Early coverage reported Bitget CEO Gracy Chen characterizing the activity as highly consistent with known North Korean hacker patterns. Elliptic later assessed a DPRK link as “highly likely,” citing infrastructure overlap, off-chain indicators and laundering methodology. Elliptic also noted that Bitget had not published the technical basis for its own attribution. Elliptic’s assessment explains its reasoning. Describe the connection as suspected or analyst-assessed, not as a confirmed North Korean attack.

Are Bitget customer balances affected, and what recovery has been reported?
Bitget says customer account balances remained unaffected and that its Protection Fund was intended to cover the incident’s financial impact. Those are the exchange’s assurances, not independently verified findings here. Bitget says some assets were frozen and that fund tracing and recovery are continuing, but its reviewed update gives no stable total for recovered funds.
Bitget warned users that it would never ask them to transfer funds or disclose passwords, private keys, seed phrases or verification codes under the pretext of helping recover assets or resume withdrawals. Treat any such request as suspicious and verify notices through Bitget’s official channels.

Have Bitget withdrawals resumed?
Bitget’s official update confirmed that BTC withdrawals resumed on September 28 and ETH withdrawals on September 29, 2026. It scheduled USDT for September 30 and other supported assets, fiat and P2P services for October 2. The reviewed update does not independently confirm that every later phase was completed by October 3. Check the current official status for the specific asset, network and service before attempting a withdrawal; a resumed asset on one network does not establish availability across all networks.
