Bitcoin: What It Enables—and What Its Real-World Use Shows

Bitcoin enables digital transfers without a financial institution authorizing each payment, but its design is not proof of broad social benefit. Here’s how the system works and what its costs and adoption evidence show.

Bitcoin brings a way to transfer digital value over a shared network without requiring a financial institution to authorize every payment. Its design combines digital signatures with a public ledger ordered through proof-of-work. That is a technical capability, not proof that Bitcoin reliably improves access, cost, speed, or financial inclusion for everyone who uses it.

To understand what Bitcoin contributes, separate what its protocol is designed to do from what adoption has demonstrated. The network’s computing and electricity costs, the responsibility users carry for their signing keys, and the limited findings from El Salvador all matter to that distinction.

Bitcoin’s original proposition: peer-to-peer digital payments

Satoshi Nakamoto’s 2008 paper proposed “a purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash” that could send online payments directly between parties without going through a financial institution. The proposal was meant to address a specific problem: digital information can be copied, so a payment system needs a way to establish that the same funds have not been spent twice. Bitcoin is both a digital asset and a protocol for recording transfers. It does not remove every form of reliance or uncertainty: participants must follow the protocol, and the paper’s security argument depends on honest participants controlling most of the relevant computing power. The system is therefore better understood as a different way to authorize and order transactions—not as a payment system with no assumptions.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

How a Bitcoin transfer is recorded

The white paper describes ownership as being transferred through a chain of digital signatures. Network participants publicly announce transactions, check whether they are valid, and collect them into blocks. Proof-of-work helps participants agree on the order of those blocks.

Part of the design What it does
Digital signatures Authorize a transfer by showing that the spender can sign for the funds being transferred.
Public transaction history Lets participants check announced transactions and whether funds appear to have already been spent.
Proof-of-work Requires computational effort to produce a block and makes that work comparatively easy for others to verify.
Linked blocks Connect each block to the one before it. Changing an earlier record would require redoing its work and catching up with later blocks.

This process makes rewriting transaction history costly under the conditions described in the paper; it does not make the ledger absolutely impossible to alter. Nakamoto’s security argument relies on honest participants controlling most of the relevant computing power. Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System

What proof-of-work contributes—and costs

Proof-of-work gives the network a way to order transactions without asking a central institution to maintain the authoritative record. Producing blocks consumes computing resources and electricity. In the white paper’s design, miners can be rewarded with newly issued coins and transaction fees. Its discussion of a future role for fees describes an incentive mechanism, not a guarantee of future fee levels or miner economics. Nakamoto’s white paper

Energy use should be discussed with a dated estimate and its measurement method, rather than as a timeless figure. The Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index is a resource for estimates; any number drawn from an index needs its date and methodology to be meaningful. There is no single energy figure here that can establish Bitcoin’s current consumption or emissions.

What Bitcoin could make possible—and what remains unproven

A payment rail that does not require a central financial institution can be useful in some circumstances. But whether it actually improves a person’s access to payments, lowers their costs, settles faster, or works more reliably depends on the setting and the alternatives available. The protocol’s technical design alone does not answer those questions.

Using Bitcoin also places practical responsibility on control of signing keys: someone able to use the relevant keys can authorize transfers, while losing access to them can prevent the owner from spending the associated funds. This responsibility is part of the experience of using the system, not an automatic benefit of decentralization.

What El Salvador’s adoption does—and does not—show

El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021. In its March 19, 2025 assessment, the International Monetary Fund said the project had not produced a visible improvement in financial inclusion and that acceptance and use by individuals and firms remained minimal, despite subsidized transaction costs. The IMF also identified fiscal, consumer-protection, and governance risks. These are findings about one country’s adoption project, not proof that no one benefits from Bitcoin or that every possible use will have the same result. IMF, “El Salvador: Selected Issues”

Policy descriptions must also be dated. At a March 6, 2025 briefing, IMF Communications Department Director Julie Kozack said that recent legal reforms had made Bitcoin acceptance voluntary and allowed taxes to be paid only in U.S. dollars. That is the IMF’s description at that briefing; it does not establish the country’s legal position after that date. IMF briefing transcript

Why institutions may assess Bitcoin differently

Bitcoin’s design is a technical proposal; views about whether governments should give crypto assets official-currency or legal-tender status are policy judgments. In a February 2023 statement, the IMF summarized its board’s position that crypto assets should not receive that status, citing monetary sovereignty and stability. This is the IMF’s policy position, not a technical property of Bitcoin or a universal legal rule. IMF, “IMF Executive Board Discusses Elements of Effective Policies for Crypto Assets”

How to judge Bitcoin’s contribution

Bitcoin’s clearest contribution is the payment and recordkeeping mechanism its design proposes: transfers authorized with digital signatures and ordered on a public proof-of-work chain. Whether that mechanism is preferable in a particular use depends on practical outcomes as well as its architecture. A fair assessment should consider who authorizes and settles payments, what intermediaries or access requirements remain, how stable the value is for the user, what fees and settlement expectations apply, how keys are recovered, and what energy use looks like under dated, comparable methods.

The available evidence supports neither a universal promise of financial improvement nor a universal claim of no benefit. Bitcoin offers a distinct way to transfer digital value; its real-world value depends on whether that way solves a specific problem better than the alternatives in the place and circumstances where it is used.
