Bitcoin is a high-volatility, price-only asset; Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government securities with a defined maturity payment. Choose bills when the priority is preserving nominal cash for a known date. Consider Bitcoin only as high-risk capital that can remain invested through severe, uncertain drawdowns. Neither asset is automatically an inflation hedge, and there is no meaningful single “winner” without specifying the time period, fees, taxes, currency and the exact Treasury-bill maturity.
The decision in one sentence
Use Treasury bills for capital preservation, liquidity reserves and near-term obligations; use Bitcoin only for a long, uncertain horizon when you can tolerate a large loss and understand custody, platform and tax responsibilities. A blended allocation can be sensible, but its size should come from your risk budget and liabilities rather than a universal percentage.

What you are actually buying
Bitcoin: a market-price claim with no maturity
Bitcoin does not promise a coupon, principal repayment or maturity value. Your return is the change in its market price, less trading, custody and other costs. The path matters: two investors can buy and sell at the same start and end dates yet experience very different interim drawdowns, liquidations or tax events.

Trading is continuous across crypto venues, but continuous availability is not the same as stable liquidity. Spreads, outages, withdrawal limits, market fragmentation and the security of your wallet or platform can affect the price you actually receive. There is no sovereign issuer obligated to repay you if a venue fails or a private key is lost.

Treasury bills: a discounted government security
Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government securities sold at a discount or with a stated yield and redeemed at face value at maturity. If you hold a bill to maturity and the issuer pays as scheduled, the redemption amount is known when you buy it; your realized return is determined by the purchase price and the time to maturity. Selling before maturity exposes you to the then-current market price.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury describes its daily bill figures as “indicative closing market bid quotations on the most recently auctioned Treasury Bills in the over-the-counter market as obtained by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York at approximately 3:30 PM each business day.” That wording matters: a quoted rate is a market observation for a particular bill, date and time—not a permanent return guarantee.
Risk and return compared
| Dimension | Bitcoin | Treasury bills |
|---|---|---|
| Main return source | Market-price appreciation or loss | Purchase discount or yield plus maturity redemption |
| Volatility | Very high; large drawdowns are possible | Usually much lower, especially when held to maturity |
| Promised cash flow | None | Scheduled maturity payment if held to maturity and the issuer pays |
| Issuer and credit exposure | No sovereign repayment promise; custody and platform risks remain | Exposure to the U.S. government issuer |
| Inflation exposure | Inflation-hedge behavior is uncertain; price can fall during inflationary or tightening episodes | Nominal payments can lose purchasing power; future reinvestment rates can change |
| Liquidity | Continuous crypto-market trading, with venue and spread risks | Established Treasury and brokerage markets; pre-maturity prices vary |
| Operational burden | Wallet, custody, exchange security, transaction records and tax administration | Account setup, settlement, maturity tracking and reinvestment |
| Typical portfolio role | High-risk growth or speculative satellite allocation | Capital preservation, liquidity reserve and short-horizon cash management |
Why a historical-return headline is not enough
A Bitcoin-versus-bill comparison needs a defined horizon and matching assumptions. Specify the Bitcoin price series and trading times, the bill’s original maturity and purchase yield, whether interest is reinvested, fees and spreads, taxes, and the investor’s currency. A one-year Bitcoin price change compared with a bill held for three months is not an apples-to-apples result.
No single current Bitcoin-versus-Treasury-bill return figure is authoritative without those definitions. A high historical Bitcoin return does not establish a forward expected return. Bill rates also change with market conditions, so a current rate must be retrieved from the Treasury’s daily series immediately before publication or purchase.

A transparent comparison method
- Set the horizon. Use the date the money is needed, not an arbitrary chart window.
- Define the instruments. Record the Bitcoin venue or reference price and the bill’s CUSIP, maturity date, purchase price and yield.
- Include cash flows. For a bill, include the maturity redemption and any reinvestment of proceeds. For Bitcoin, include every sale, purchase, distribution or borrowing cost.
- Subtract implementation costs. Include commissions, spreads, custody fees, fund expenses, wire or withdrawal charges and account costs.
- Apply the investor’s tax rules. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction, account type, holding period and transaction history.
- Report more than one statistic. Show ending value, worst drawdown, time underwater, volatility and the chance that the money is below its required amount on the liability date.
This process prevents a spectacular but irrelevant Bitcoin chart from being used to justify money that must be available for rent, tuition, payroll or a home purchase.
Treasury bills in detail
Cash-flow certainty when held to maturity
The defining feature of a bill is its scheduled maturity payment. You know the redemption date and face value when you purchase it. That makes matching a bill’s maturity to a known liability straightforward. It does not eliminate every risk: the government could fail to pay, taxes can reduce the after-tax return, and inflation can erode what the dollars buy.
Market risk before maturity
If you sell before maturity, the price reflects current short-term rates, time remaining, demand and market liquidity. When market yields rise, the price of an existing fixed-rate bill generally falls; when yields fall, its price generally rises. A holder who can wait for maturity avoids realizing that interim price movement, but someone who needs cash early may have to accept it.

A bill that matures does not lock in today’s rate forever. If you roll the proceeds into a new bill, the replacement yield may be lower or higher. A ladder of staggered maturities can spread this timing risk, but it cannot guarantee a future rate.

Inflation and purchasing power
Treasury bills address nominal default exposure, not purchasing-power certainty. If consumer prices rise faster than the bill’s after-tax return, your real wealth declines. Their short maturities allow frequent repricing, which can help when rates rise, but the adjustment occurs only as each bill matures or is replaced.
Ways to obtain bills
Investors generally use a direct Treasury account or a brokerage that offers new-issue auctions and secondary-market securities. Before placing an order, verify the maturity date, auction or secondary-market price, settlement date, minimum denomination, commission and what happens to proceeds at maturity. A brokerage may make selling easier; a direct account may simplify holding new issues but can have different transfer and trading features.
Bitcoin in detail
Volatility and drawdowns
Bitcoin’s return distribution is wide. Large gains can occur, but a position can also lose a substantial fraction of its value before recovering—or fail to recover during the investor’s horizon. A person who cannot tolerate a severe temporary or permanent loss should not fund Bitcoin with emergency cash, a near-term liability or borrowed money.

Changing relationship with equities
A 2026 Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago working paper found that Bitcoin’s equity exposure became statistically larger than zero around 2020. The authors wrote that Bitcoin had “transitioned from a largely idiosyncratic crypto asset into a risk-on asset with returns resembling that of the broad U.S. stock market.” The practical implication is that Bitcoin may add less diversification during equity sell-offs than older descriptions suggested. In the same study, Treasury-bond return betas were not distinguishable from zero over the examined period.

Custody, venue and execution risk
Direct ownership requires a decision about private-key storage, backups, inheritance, transaction approvals and recovery procedures. Leaving coins with a platform adds counterparty, withdrawal and operational risk; moving them to self-custody shifts responsibility for key security to you. Either route requires accurate records of acquisition cost, transfers and disposals.
Spot-Bitcoin exchange-traded products
Regulated spot-Bitcoin exchange-traded products provide market exposure through a securities account rather than a personal wallet. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said in a 2024 investor bulletin that these products are registered securities and remain subject to federal securities-law anti-fraud provisions, while warning: “This risk may be increased for spot bitcoin and ether ETPs because of the high volatility of those crypto assets (meaning prices can fluctuate widely).” Registration does not make the underlying asset low risk. The Federal Reserve Board reported roughly $100 billion in aggregate crypto-ETP market capitalization in late December 2024 and said 13-F filers held roughly 20% of crypto-ETP shares at the end of September 2024. Its analysis also highlighted liquidity and net-asset-value-premium considerations. The SEC issued additional crypto-asset interpretive guidance in March 2026, so product structure and regulatory details should be checked before purchase.
Is Bitcoin an inflation hedge?
Bitcoin’s fixed-supply narrative does not prove a dependable inflation hedge. Its price can fall during inflationary or monetary-tightening episodes, and the historical relationship varies by period. Treat inflation protection as an unestablished hypothesis, not as a guaranteed property.

How to implement each choice
Buying and managing Treasury bills
- Define the liability date. Choose a maturity that gives you the cash when needed, allowing for settlement and transfer time.
- Compare the all-in yield. Check the current Treasury quote or auction terms, then include brokerage commissions, bid-ask spread and taxes.
- Choose direct or brokerage access. Confirm minimums, auction participation, secondary-market trading and maturity instructions.
- Place the order. Record the security identifier, price or discount rate, settlement date and maturity date.
- Plan the maturity. Decide in advance whether proceeds will be spent, transferred to cash or reinvested; do not assume automatic reinvestment uses the same rate.
- Keep records. Save confirmations and tax documents, and reconcile the account after settlement and maturity.
Obtaining Bitcoin exposure
- Set a maximum loss you can accept. Fund the position only with money that is not required for essential spending or a dated obligation.
- Choose direct ownership or an ETP. Direct ownership adds wallet and key-management duties; an ETP adds product fees, market-hours limitations and possible premiums or discounts to net asset value.
- Check the provider. Review custody arrangements, trading venue, creation and redemption process, expense ratio, spread, liquidity, tax reporting and what happens during an outage.
- Secure access. Use strong account authentication, a tested backup and a documented recovery or estate plan. For self-custody, verify addresses and test a small transaction before transferring a larger amount.
- Record every transaction. Track dates, units, prices, fees, transfers and disposals so the tax basis can be reconstructed.
- Set review rules before buying. Decide what would cause you to reduce, hold or exit; do not invent a new rule during a panic or price surge.
Which asset fits your objective?
| Your situation | More suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Cash needed within months or on a known date | Treasury bill matched to the date | Maturity payment and lower price volatility when held to maturity |
| Emergency reserve | Short-duration government securities and cash access | Reliability matters more than uncertain upside |
| Long-term growth with capacity for severe losses | Possibly a limited Bitcoin allocation after core needs are met | Upside is possible, but no return or recovery is promised |
| Low tolerance for nominal loss | Treasury bills | Bitcoin’s price can fall sharply without a maturity backstop |
| Need to diversify an equity-heavy portfolio | Do not assume Bitcoin is defensive | Chicago Fed evidence indicates positive equity exposure around 2020 |
| Need inflation certainty | Neither is a guarantee | Bills can lose real value; Bitcoin’s inflation response is uncertain |
Using both without pretending they are equivalent
A combined portfolio can separate jobs: bills fund spending and known liabilities, while a deliberately limited Bitcoin position supplies high-risk growth exposure. Size Bitcoin by the loss your overall finances can absorb, not by a headline allocation copied from someone else. Stress-test a scenario in which Bitcoin falls sharply while equities also decline and bills merely preserve nominal value. If that outcome would force you to sell, the position is too large or the horizon too short.
Best Value
Rebalancing should be rule-based. A calendar review or a pre-set range can prevent a rising Bitcoin price from silently dominating the portfolio, while also avoiding forced sales in response to every daily move. Keep the bill ladder and the Bitcoin position in separate records so a short-term cash need does not trigger an avoidable crypto sale.
Costs, taxes and practical frictions
- Trading costs: Bitcoin spreads and execution slippage can be material during stressed markets; bills have bid-ask spreads and possibly brokerage commissions.
- Product costs: A Bitcoin ETP charges an expense ratio and can trade at a premium or discount to its net asset value. A bill has no fund expense ratio, but its purchase price embeds the market discount or yield.
- Taxes: Interest, discounts, capital gains, losses and ETP distributions receive different treatment depending on jurisdiction and account. Keep basis and holding-period records and consult a qualified tax professional for your circumstances.
- Access and settlement: Bills settle under securities-market rules; crypto venues may operate continuously but can pause withdrawals or trading. Do not assume either market is available at the exact moment you need cash.
- Fraud and security: Confirm addresses, domains, account alerts and withdrawal controls. An irreversible crypto transfer and a compromised brokerage login require different recovery procedures.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing a bill’s yield with Bitcoin’s best year
Replace the cherry-picked chart with a matched horizon, total-return calculation and drawdown analysis. Include taxes, fees and reinvestment.
Treating a bill quote as a guaranteed annual return
Identify the exact maturity and purchase price. A quoted annualized yield applies to that instrument and holding convention, not to every future bill.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCalling continuous trading “safe liquidity”
Bitcoin may trade 24/7 while spreads widen, venues fail or withdrawals pause. Bills are liquid securities, but selling before maturity can produce a loss relative to your purchase price.
Assuming an ETP removes Bitcoin risk
An ETP changes custody and access; it does not remove Bitcoin’s volatility. Check premiums, discounts, fees and the product’s trading hours.
Using borrowed or emergency money
Leverage can turn a price decline into a forced sale. Keep essential reserves outside high-risk assets.
A maintenance checklist
- Review the bill maturity calendar and confirm where proceeds will go.
- Retrieve current bill rates before each purchase; rates are time- and maturity-specific.
- Reconcile Bitcoin or ETP statements with your transaction and tax records.
- Check custody, beneficiary and recovery arrangements at least annually.
- Measure the Bitcoin position against your pre-set risk limit after large price moves.
- Reassess the plan when your liability date, income, debt or risk capacity changes.
Bottom line
Treasury bills offer a defined maturity payment and comparatively modest price volatility, making them the practical tool for near-term cash and capital preservation—while still leaving inflation and reinvestment risk. Bitcoin offers uncertain, potentially very large gains and losses with no contractual repayment, plus custody and market-structure hazards. Choose bills for money you must have; consider Bitcoin only for money you can afford to lose and hold through an unpredictable path.
