Neither Bitcoin nor a stablecoin is a guaranteed store of value during volatile markets. Bitcoin’s price can move sharply against the currency you spend; a stablecoin is designed to track a reference asset—often the U.S. dollar—but its peg, reserves, redemption access and trading liquidity can fail or become harder to rely on. The better fit depends on your spending currency, how long you need to hold the money and how quickly you may need to use it.
Is Bitcoin or a stablecoin safer to hold when the market is volatile?
They expose you to different kinds of risk, so “safer” depends on what loss you are trying to avoid. Bitcoin has no fiat-currency peg: its price is set by market forces and can fluctuate substantially. The CFTC cautions that virtual-currency values are “completely derived by market forces of supply and demand” and are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies. CFTC customer advisory

A stablecoin is designed to track a reference asset, such as the U.S. dollar, but the label covers different designs. A token’s real-world reliability depends on how it maintains its peg, the assets backing it (if any), who issues it, whether and how holders can redeem it, and whether there is enough market liquidity when they want to sell. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s April 4, 2025 statement describes a limited category of USD-pegged tokens designed for one-for-one redemption and backed by low-risk, readily liquid reserves; it is not a blanket assessment of all stablecoins or a universal legal ruling. |---|---|---|
| What is it designed to track? | No fiat peg; its market price changes with supply, demand and speculative demand. | A reference asset, commonly a fiat currency; the design and peg mechanism vary by token. |
| What can make its value fall? | A decline in its market price relative to your spending currency. | A peg deviation, weak or illiquid reserves, redemption barriers, market disruption or technical problems. |
| What should you investigate? | Your time horizon, price volatility, trading liquidity and custody arrangements. | The specific token and issuer, reserve information, redemption terms and eligibility, trading liquidity, network and jurisdiction. |
Can stablecoins lose their peg?
Yes. “Designed to track” is not the same as “guaranteed to remain at” a reference price. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) says that even fiat-backed stablecoins do not always trade exactly at par in secondary markets and that significant peg breaks have occurred. BIS Bulletin 108

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
A market price is not the same as redemption
A token’s price on an exchange reflects what buyers and sellers will pay there. Direct redemption is a separate route and may depend on the issuer’s terms, who is eligible, the size of the transaction and practical access. Do not assume you can redeem a token directly with its issuer simply because it is described as dollar-backed.
Backing and design matter
Fiat-reserve-backed, crypto-collateralized and algorithmic stablecoins do not share the same protections or failure modes. The BIS’s Working Paper 1164 analyzes run risk through models and case studies. It finds that reserve quality and perceived volatility matter; when backing assets are highly volatile, par convertibility can withstand small shocks but fail under large negative ones, even with high initial reserve values. The authors note that the paper’s views do not necessarily represent those of the BIS or its member central banks. BIS Working Paper 1164

Is Bitcoin a safe haven?
The cited evidence does not establish Bitcoin as a dependable way to preserve value during market stress. Its market price is volatile, and that volatility can work against someone who needs a stable amount in a particular spending currency. A stablecoin is not automatically a safe haven either: a 2024 BIS working paper found that stablecoins did not act as safe havens from the crypto-market or U.S. monetary-policy shocks studied. That is a finding about the paper’s analysis, not a prediction about every token or future shock. BIS Working Paper 1219

For a longer holding period, dollar tracking also does not guarantee purchasing power: a dollar-pegged token is designed to follow the dollar’s value, not to protect it from changes in what dollars can buy.

How should you decide what to hold?
Start with the job the money needs to do, rather than with the asset’s label.
- Identify your spending currency. If your upcoming expenses are in a currency other than the stablecoin’s reference currency, a dollar peg does not remove your exposure to exchange-rate changes.
- Set the holding period. If you may need a predictable amount soon, Bitcoin’s market-price fluctuations may make it a poor match. A stablecoin may track its reference currency more closely in ordinary conditions, but its peg and redemption risks remain.
- Check how quickly you need access. Consider whether you would sell on a secondary market or qualify for direct redemption, and whether liquidity and access would be available when needed.
- For a stablecoin, investigate the exact token. Review its mechanism, issuer, reserve disclosures and liquidity, redemption eligibility and terms, network, and the rules that apply where you live.
- For Bitcoin, consider whether you can tolerate a price decline. The CFTC’s warning about virtual-currency volatility describes market risk, not a forecast of a particular future price.
What does a hardware wallet protect?
A compatible hardware wallet can support self-custody by helping manage the private keys used to control assets. It does not stabilize Bitcoin’s price, guarantee recovery, or ensure that a stablecoin issuer will redeem a token. Token and network support varies and can change; check current vendor documentation for the exact asset and network. Ledger’s support page says its hardware wallets and app support Bitcoin and many tokens, while some assets may require a compatible third-party wallet. Ledger supported coins and tokens
