Bitcoin vs. Ethereum vs. XRP: What Each Is For and How They Differ

Bitcoin is built around peer-to-peer digital currency, Ethereum around smart-contract applications, and the XRP Ledger around payments and settlement. Compare their native assets and consensus designs.

Bitcoin is designed for peer-to-peer digital currency, Ethereum for running smart-contract applications, and the XRP Ledger for payments, settlement, and exchange among assets. Their native assets—bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), and XRP—serve different roles on different networks. None is automatically a better choice: the right comparison depends on what a network is built to do, not on an investment ranking.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP are not the same kind of thing

A blockchain network is the shared system that records transactions and applies rules. A native asset is the digital unit associated with that system. The distinction matters especially for XRP: XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), not the ledger itself.

  • Bitcoin can refer to the Bitcoin network or, informally, its native asset, bitcoin (BTC).
  • Ethereum is the network; ether (ETH) is its native asset. Avoid calling ETH “Ethereum coin.”
  • XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL). XRP and Ripple are not synonyms.

What is Bitcoin for?

Bitcoin is a decentralized peer-to-peer digital currency system. Its public blockchain records confirmed transfers. A wallet’s private key authorizes spending by signing a transaction, while proof-of-work mining helps confirm transactions and order the ledger. Bitcoin.org describes the blockchain as “a shared public ledger that the entire Bitcoin network relies on.” Bitcoin.org’s explanation of how Bitcoin works says a first confirmation usually takes about 10 to 60 minutes; that is a documentation description, not a guaranteed wait for every transaction.

Bitcoin.org describes the process and the role of keys and mining; Ethereum.org’s comparison describes Bitcoin’s maximum supply as 21 million. That cap is a protocol design feature, not evidence of future price or value. Ethereum.org’s Bitcoin comparison sets out that supply figure.

What is Ethereum used for?

Ethereum is a decentralized platform for applications and digital assets. Developers deploy smart contracts—programs on the network that execute when users submit transactions. This general-purpose execution environment is the central design difference from Bitcoin’s focus on transfers of a digital currency.

ETH has two relevant network roles: it pays for computation, and it supports Ethereum’s proof-of-stake security model. Ethereum’s technical documentation explains how the network executes transactions and smart contracts; its Bitcoin comparison describes the difference in purpose and consensus. Ethereum’s technical introduction and Ethereum’s Bitcoin comparison provide those details.

What is XRP, and what is the XRP Ledger for?

The XRP Ledger is a decentralized payment and settlement ledger. Its documentation describes support for payments denominated in different assets and a decentralized exchange. XRP is the ledger’s native asset; the network and the asset are distinct. XRPL documentation describes settlement as near-real-time, typically three to six seconds. This is a project documentation figure, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee for every transaction or condition.

XRPL reaches agreement through validators following its own consensus protocol, rather than Bitcoin-style proof-of-work mining. Validators are selected by network participants; this is a distinct consensus design, not simply another name for proof-of-stake. Read the XRP Ledger consensus protocol documentation for the mechanism and its consensus principles and rules for how agreement is defined.

Key differences at a glance

Network Primary design purpose Native asset and role Consensus approach
Bitcoin Peer-to-peer digital currency transfers Bitcoin (BTC), the network’s native digital currency Proof-of-work mining confirms transactions and orders the ledger
Ethereum General-purpose applications, smart contracts, and digital assets Ether (ETH) pays for computation and supports proof-of-stake security Proof of stake
XRP Ledger (XRPL) Payments, settlement, and exchange among assets XRP is the ledger’s native asset XRPL’s validator consensus protocol

Why speed and finality figures do not make a fair benchmark

The available descriptions use different concepts: Bitcoin.org says a first confirmation usually takes about 10 to 60 minutes; XRPL documentation describes settlement as three to six seconds; Ethereum.org’s comparison discusses Ethereum finality. These figures should not be read as results from one controlled test. Confirmation, settlement, and finality are not interchangeable labels, and actual transaction experience depends on conditions and on what a source means by completion. A shorter published settlement interval alone does not establish that a network is always cheaper, faster, safer, or preferable.

Which difference matters for your use?

  • For a system centered on digital-currency transfers: Bitcoin’s documented purpose is peer-to-peer digital currency, with proof-of-work mining.
  • For applications that need programmable on-chain logic: Ethereum provides smart-contract execution, with ETH used to pay for computation.
  • For payment, settlement, or exchange among assets: XRPL documentation emphasizes those functions and its validator-based consensus process.

These are differences in network design, not conclusions about which asset will perform well as an investment. The documentation cited here does not establish a return forecast, adoption ranking, or reason to buy one token over another.
