Bitcoin and Ethereum are both public blockchains, but they were designed with different priorities. Bitcoin centers on peer-to-peer money and settlement; Ethereum adds a programmable environment for smart contracts and decentralized applications. Their fees therefore work differently, and their upgrades are coordinated in different ways. Neither network is always cheaper, and no single fee quote applies to every transaction.
What is the difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum?
Bitcoin’s founding design is peer-to-peer electronic cash. In his 2008 whitepaper, Satoshi Nakamoto described a system for sending online payments directly between parties without a financial institution, using digital signatures, proof of work and a peer-to-peer network to address double-spending. Read the Bitcoin whitepaper.

Ethereum was proposed as a programmable blockchain: smart contracts can encode rules and applications can update shared state. Its original whitepaper is a historical document, not a complete description of the live network. Ethereum.org notes that it was published in 2014, before launch, and “no longer reflects what Ethereum is today.” See Ethereum’s whitepaper page.

The distinction is about primary design aims, not exclusive capabilities. Bitcoin can be used with additional protocol layers and applications, while Ethereum also transfers value through its native asset, ether (ETH).

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Why are Ethereum gas fees different from Bitcoin transaction fees?
Bitcoin fees reflect transaction data and block-space demand
Bitcoin transactions compete for limited block space. A fee is generally an offer for inclusion, and its relationship to transaction data size matters more than the amount of bitcoin being transferred: sending a large value does not automatically require a larger fee than sending a small value. The actual offer needed for a desired confirmation time can vary with demand and transaction construction. Bitcoin.org explains transaction fees.
Ethereum gas pays for computation and shared resources
Ethereum uses gas to account for the computation and network resources a transaction consumes. A basic ether transfer and a smart-contract interaction can require different amounts of work, so their gas usage can differ. Network-wide demand also affects the fee. Gas costs are paid in ether. Ethereum.org’s gas documentation describes the mechanism.

EIP-1559 separates the base fee from the tip
Under Ethereum’s EIP-1559 fee model, each block has a base fee that changes with demand: it rises when gas usage is above the target and falls when usage is below it. The base fee is burned. A sender may also set a priority fee, or tip, and a maximum fee per gas. These are distinct components; the base fee is not a fixed charge, and not every part of the fee goes to a validator. Ethereum.org’s gas documentation covers the fee model.
How to compare actual costs
There is no useful timeless answer to “which network is cheaper?” without specifying what is being done and when. A like-for-like comparison needs the transaction type, a timestamp, current demand and—on Ethereum—the distinction between mainnet and a layer 2. Mainnet and layer-2 fees should not be treated as the same service or combined into one figure. Fees fluctuate, so check a current estimator or wallet quote immediately before sending rather than relying on an old example.

How do Bitcoin and Ethereum upgrades work?
Bitcoin: proposals depend on broad adoption
Bitcoin protocol changes require coordination among independent participants, including those who maintain and run software. A 2016 statement from the Bitcoin Core project described improvements as proposals that should make technical sense and have a reasonable chance of broad support and adoption. It is a project statement, not a binding constitution for every Bitcoin participant. Changes that break compatibility with earlier software can be especially consequential; Bitcoin Core’s statement describes hard forks as breaking that compatibility. Read the Bitcoin Core statement.
Ethereum: a public roadmap and coordinated client updates
Ethereum publishes a roadmap of protocol upgrades and coordinates software changes across client teams and node operators. The roadmap lists The Merge (September 15, 2022), Shapella (April 12, 2023), Dencun (March 13, 2024), Pectra (May 7, 2025) and Fusaka (December 3, 2025) as completed. On the page updated September 24, 2026, Glamsterdam was listed as in development for Q4 2026 and Hegotá for 2027. Those future entries are plans, not guaranteed dates; Ethereum.org says the roadmap can change. Check Ethereum’s roadmap.

The Merge moved Ethereum from energy-intensive proof-of-work mining to proof of stake. Ethereum.org’s roadmap page, updated in 2026, estimates that the change reduced energy consumption by approximately 99.95%; that figure concerns energy consumption, not transaction fees. See the roadmap’s Merge summary.
What should users do when a network upgrade happens?
An upgrade does not automatically mean that a user needs to move coins or convert assets. Ethereum’s roadmap says ordinary users generally do not need to take action just to secure assets during an upgrade, while node operators need to update their clients. Follow the official notice for the specific upgrade and any wallet or service you use; requirements can differ by upgrade and by provider. Bitcoin users should likewise rely on the relevant software or service’s instructions rather than assuming every protocol change requires an action on their part. Ethereum’s roadmap guidance.
