Its protocol specifies an eventual supply cap of 21 million BTC, which is central to the scarcity argument many users make for it.
- Ethereum (ETH): a programmable network for smart contracts, decentralized applications, and digital assets. Ether pays transaction gas and can be staked to help secure the network. Ethereum has no fixed maximum supply; issuance and fee burning interact over time.
- Consensus: Bitcoin uses proof-of-work, in which miners expend computation and energy to add blocks. Ethereum uses proof-of-stake, in which validators stake ETH and can be penalized for certain dishonest behavior.
- Custody: on either network, self-custody means protecting the wallet keys that control your funds. The wallet decision is a separate security responsibility, not a reason by itself to prefer one chain.
If you mainly want a monetary network, begin with Bitcoin’s design. If you need to use applications or issue and interact with programmable assets, begin with Ethereum. If you are considering either solely because you expect a higher return, this information cannot establish that outcome.

Choose according to the job you need to do
When the goal is monetary exposure
Bitcoin was designed around peer-to-peer payments and a deliberately constrained monetary policy. The 21 million ceiling is written into the current protocol rules, so someone whose central question is “How scarce is the native asset by design?” will find Bitcoin’s policy easier to state and evaluate.
A fixed cap does not guarantee a price increase. It tells you what the protocol targets for eventual issuance, not what buyers will pay, how demand will develop, or how the rules might be changed through future consensus decisions. Treat scarcity as one part of a thesis rather than a return forecast.

When the goal is to use applications
Ethereum is built as a general-purpose programmable network. Smart contracts can represent application logic and digital assets, and ETH is the asset used to pay gas for those operations. If you need to interact with decentralized applications, tokens, or other contract-based functions, Ethereum’s broader execution environment is the relevant feature.
Using Ethereum does not require you to become a developer. It does require you to understand which application you are authorizing, what asset and network a transaction uses, and which wallet account is signing it.
When you need both monetary and application functions
Some people have separate objectives: a monetary-network exposure and access to programmable applications. Those objectives point to different networks, but they do not require a predetermined allocation or prove that holding both is suitable. Decide each position by its job, custody method, and risk you can explain, rather than treating the two tickers as interchangeable substitutes.
Do not confuse the asset with the network
Bitcoin is both the name of the network and the native asset, usually written BTC. Ethereum is the network; ether, written ETH, is its native asset. ETH is not merely a share in a company. It is used inside Ethereum to pay gas and participate in proof-of-stake security.

Consensus and security: compare mechanisms, not slogans
Bitcoin’s proof-of-work
Bitcoin’s proof-of-work system has miners compete to add blocks by expending computation and energy. The cost of participation is visible in hardware, electricity, and operating effort. The model has been used for a long time, and its security argument is tied to the expense of producing the computational work that the chain accepts.
Mining is not the same as holding BTC. A BTC holder does not need mining equipment to use the network, although the network’s transaction confirmation and security depend on miners continuing to participate.
Ethereum’s proof-of-stake
Ethereum’s proof-of-stake system uses validators that lock, or stake, ETH. The protocol can penalize validators for certain dishonest conduct, so the economic risk is tied to the stake as well as to technical operation. Ethereum’s documentation describes a finality model in which validator agreement gives the chain stronger confirmation than simply waiting for more activity.

Running a solo Ethereum validator requires 32 ETH, according to Ethereum.org’s technical comparison. That requirement applies to operating a validator yourself; it does not mean every ETH holder must run one. Pooled staking provides another participation route, but relying on a pool or provider introduces operational and concentration risks that you must evaluate separately.
Why “which is safer?” has no one-word answer
Proof-of-work and proof-of-stake expose an attacker to different costs and failure modes. Proof-of-work relies on control of computational work and energy; proof-of-stake relies on staked capital, validator rules, and penalties. Ethereum.org states that “Proof-of-stake is much more complex than proof-of-work” on its page last updated April 13, 2026. Complexity and maturity are relevant considerations, but they are not a universal ranking.
Your threat model matters. Ask whether you understand the mechanism, whether you can assess the infrastructure you would rely on, and whether you are comfortable with the consequences of a software, key-management, or provider failure. Avoid claims that either chain is categorically more secure without specifying the conditions being compared.
Supply policy and what it does—and does not—tell you
Bitcoin’s 21 million ceiling
Bitcoin’s protocol specifies an eventual cap of 21 million BTC under its current rules. That gives the asset a clearly stated long-run issuance constraint. It does not eliminate short-term volatility, create demand, or guarantee that the cap will remain unchanged if the network’s participants ever adopt different rules.
Ethereum’s issuance and fee burning
ETH has no fixed maximum supply. Protocol issuance adds ETH, while a portion of transaction fees is burned. When burning exceeds issuance, the supply can contract; when issuance is greater, it can expand. The direction therefore depends on network activity and protocol conditions at the time.

A period of net ETH burn is not a promise of permanent deflation or appreciation. Likewise, Bitcoin’s cap is not a price target. Supply policy helps you understand each network’s monetary design, but it cannot substitute for a demand, usage, or risk analysis.
Programmability and application risk
Bitcoin keeps a narrower protocol focus and more limited scripting. That can make its intended role easier to describe: transferring and holding the native monetary asset under the network’s rules.
Ethereum exposes a broader smart-contract environment. The flexibility enables lending, exchanges, collectibles, governance systems, and other application categories, but each contract adds another layer to evaluate. A transaction can be validly recorded while still producing an outcome you did not intend because the contract, website, token, or approval was deceptive or defective.
- Confirm that the application is the one you intended to use.
- Read the asset, amount, network, recipient, and permissions shown by your wallet.
- Keep enough ETH for gas when interacting with Ethereum applications.
- Do not assume that an asset’s existence on Ethereum proves that its issuer or contract is trustworthy.
Bitcoin’s narrower functionality reduces some application-layer decisions, but it does not remove the need to verify addresses, backups, and transaction details.
Energy: an important distinction in the comparison
Ethereum.org reports an approximately 99.98% reduction in Ethereum’s energy use after its transition to proof-of-stake. The page describes this as the result of moving away from proof-of-work and was last updated April 13, 2026.
That figure is an estimate of Ethereum’s transition, not a current head-to-head energy ratio against Bitcoin. Bitcoin remains a proof-of-work network, while Ethereum’s proof-of-stake security does not require miners to perform the same kind of competitive computation. Compare the mechanisms and the measurement boundaries rather than turning the 99.98% figure into a claim that one chain uses exactly a particular multiple less energy than the other today.

What self-custody means
Bitcoin.org explains that a wallet keeps the keys controlling funds and that self-custody makes the user responsible for securing the wallet. The same principle applies when an Ethereum wallet controls ETH and signs application transactions: whoever controls the keys can authorize transfers.
Recommended Free Tools
Self-custody removes reliance on a custodian for access, but it transfers responsibility to you. A lost recovery phrase, exposed private key, or mistaken address can be irreversible. Back up recovery information offline, protect it from unauthorized access, and make sure trusted heirs could understand the recovery plan without receiving the keys prematurely.

Hardware-wallet category
A hardware wallet can keep signing keys in a dedicated device, which may reduce exposure to malware on a general-purpose computer. It does not make a transaction safe by itself. You can still lose the recovery information, approve a malicious contract, send funds to the wrong address, or be tricked by a fake setup process. Treat hardware as one layer in a custody plan, not as insurance against user error.
Custodial alternatives
If a service holds the keys for you, you trade direct key-management work for reliance on that service’s security, solvency, policies, and access controls. The right choice depends on what you can operate safely. Before transferring funds, understand withdrawal rules, supported networks, account recovery, and what happens if the service is unavailable; these details change by provider and jurisdiction.
A step-by-step way to choose
- Write the intended job in one sentence. Use wording such as “I want a monetary-network exposure” or “I need to use a smart-contract application.” If you cannot state the job, you are not ready to select a network.
- Choose the network before choosing a wallet or service. Bitcoin’s job points toward BTC; application use points toward Ethereum and ETH. Do not let a wallet’s interface decide the underlying purpose.
- Test your supply thesis. Decide whether a fixed cap is essential to your reasoning. If it is, Bitcoin’s 21 million rule is directly relevant. If you are evaluating ETH, understand issuance and fee burning instead of treating ETH as capped.
- Read the consensus trade-off. Ask whether you understand miners and proof-of-work or validators, staking, penalties, and proof-of-stake. Do not pick on the word “safer.”
- Decide how keys will be controlled. Compare self-custody with a custodian, then document backups, recovery, and who can approve a transfer. For Ethereum, include the additional risk of signing application permissions.
- Check current operational facts immediately before acting. Fees, confirmation or finality behavior, staking participation and rewards, live supply, exchange availability, regulation, and product inventory are changeable. Verify them in current official documentation for your region and date.
- Use a small verification transaction when appropriate. Confirm the destination address and network, send a test amount you can afford to lose, and wait for the expected confirmation before moving a larger balance. A test does not protect against a malicious recipient, so verify the recipient independently.
- Record the reason for the decision. Note the use case, custody arrangement, and conditions that would make you reconsider. This prevents a price move from silently replacing your original rationale.
Which network fits common situations?
You want a simple monetary thesis
Bitcoin is the closer conceptual fit when your priority is a peer-to-peer monetary network and the 21 million ceiling is a defining requirement. You still need a custody plan and must accept proof-of-work’s energy and mining-based security model.
You need decentralized applications or digital assets
Ethereum is the functional fit when you need smart contracts, application interactions, or ETH-denominated gas. Plan for contract risk, changing fees, and the need to understand wallet prompts.
You are interested in staking
Staking is an Ethereum-specific participation choice in this comparison. Solo validation requires 32 ETH; pooled routes avoid that exact threshold but add provider and concentration risks. Reward rates and participation conditions are variable, so do not treat staking as a guaranteed yield.
You are deciding only from recent performance
Neither network’s design facts can tell you which asset will perform better. A price chart does not answer whether you need a monetary network, an application platform, or a particular custody arrangement. If the only reason to choose is an expected return, pause and obtain current, jurisdiction-appropriate financial guidance rather than treating this article as a forecast.
Questions to resolve before transferring funds
- Am I sending BTC on the Bitcoin network or ETH on Ethereum, and does the destination support that exact network?
- Who controls the destination keys, and what is the recovery process if access is lost?
- For an Ethereum transaction, what contract am I calling and what permission am I granting?
- Have I checked the current fee and confirmation expectations instead of relying on an old screenshot or quote?
- Is the amount small enough that a permanent mistake would not threaten essential finances?
- Can I explain why this network fits my stated use case without mentioning a predicted price?
Limits of a BTC-versus-ETH comparison
This comparison does not provide a current price, market-size statistic, return estimate, staking rate, or regulatory conclusion. Those facts are time- and location-dependent and should be checked against current official documentation and applicable local rules. It also does not establish that one asset belongs in your portfolio, that self-custody is suitable for everyone, or that a fixed cap or net ETH burn guarantees appreciation.
The durable conclusion is narrower and more useful: Bitcoin is organized around peer-to-peer money and constrained issuance; Ethereum is organized around programmable applications and a staking-secured platform economy. Choose the network whose purpose, consensus model, supply policy, and custody responsibilities match what you actually intend to do.
