Bitcoin and Ethereum share the possibility of sharp losses, but their historical volatility figures and network risks are not identical. A 2025 SEC-filed prospectus reported higher annualized volatility and a larger maximum annual price decrease for Ether than for Bitcoin over its stated nine-year sample ending December 31, 2024. That is a historical comparison—not a forecast—and the available figures do not establish that either asset reliably recovers faster after a crash.
Which has been more volatile: Bitcoin or Ethereum?
In one directly comparable historical calculation, Ether was more volatile. A 2025 SEC-filed prospectus reported annualized volatility of 88% for ETH and 56% for BTC across the nine years ending December 31, 2024. The same prospectus reported maximum annual price decreases of 82.4% for ETH and 73.8% for BTC; both occurred in 2018. These are figures reported by that filing for its stated period and methodology, not current volatility readings or predictions of future losses. SEC-filed prospectus

“Maximum annual price decrease” is not necessarily the same measure as a peak-to-trough drawdown. Neither statistic says what will happen in the next downturn, and volatility alone does not describe the timing or severity of an investor’s actual loss.
Does Bitcoin recover faster than Ethereum after a crash?
The available evidence does not establish a reliable winner on recovery speed. A recovery comparison needs a shared definition and matching data: for example, the time each asset takes to regain its previous all-time high, or to recover a specified share of a peak-to-trough loss. The cited SEC material provides a historical volatility comparison but no harmonized BTC–ETH recovery-duration series. Without one consistent date range, currency, data frequency, and recovery definition, claims that Bitcoin or Ethereum “recovers faster” are not well supported.

Why the definition matters
Regaining a prior high is a stricter milestone than recovering part of a drawdown. The size of a loss also affects the climb back: a 50% fall requires a 100% gain from the low to return to the starting price. A deeper loss requires an even larger percentage gain. So a strong rebound does not necessarily mean the asset has fully recovered.
What Bitcoin’s drawdowns show—and what they do not
A separate SEC filing reports that Bitcoin fell from a 2021–2022 cycle peak of $67,734 to a low of $15,632, a 77% drawdown. This illustrates how large a BTC loss can be; it is not a matched comparison with Ethereum and does not determine which asset recovered sooner. SEC filing on Bitcoin risks
The filing also recounts volatility during later market stress. It says some sources estimated Bitcoin lost about 14% in mid-October 2025 amid broader digital-asset turmoil, and reports liquidations of up to $20 billion in digital-asset collateral across leveraged trading and financing activity. These are the filing’s account of that episode, not proof that one factor alone caused the price moves or a measure of how BTC compared with ETH.

How the networks create different risks
Bitcoin: proof-of-work mining
Bitcoin uses proof of work: miners expend computing power to propose blocks and secure the network. That structure shapes the network’s operating incentives, but it does not make Bitcoin’s market price immune to changes in demand, liquidity, regulation, or investor sentiment.
Rank #3
Ethereum: proof of stake and smart contracts
Ethereum uses proof of stake. Validators lock up ETH and are selected to propose and verify blocks; misbehavior can lead to a loss of some staked funds. Ethereum also supports programmable smart contracts and decentralized-finance applications, adding software and application-layer risks. Bugs, failed upgrades, or problems in applications built on the network could weaken confidence or demand.
These differences matter for network operations and ecosystem exposure, not as a shortcut for ranking token-price safety. The BIS describes proof-of-work and proof-of-stake mechanisms and notes that congestion in public permissionless blockchains can raise transaction costs and affect usability. Risks both assets share
- Market and liquidity shocks: Changes in demand, sentiment, or leveraged positions can intensify declines. Failures among exchanges, lenders, or other counterparties can also disrupt trading and liquidity. SEC-filed disclosures describe volatility and the 2022 failures of firms including Celsius, Voyager, Three Arrows Capital, and FTX. SEC-filed risk disclosures
- Custody and private-key loss: Digital assets depend on access to private keys. If keys are lost, stolen, or compromised and no usable backup exists, assets may be permanently inaccessible. Transactions can be irreversible, and incorrectly transferred assets may not be recoverable. SEC-filed disclosure on digital-asset risks
- Regulation: Laws and regulatory decisions can affect trading, custody, network services, and market confidence. The direction and effects depend on jurisdiction and can change over time.
- Software, governance, and forks: Vulnerabilities, network interruptions, contentious upgrades, or disagreement among users, miners, validators, and developers can affect confidence or utility. Both networks depend on voluntary participation and consensus, and either can face disputes or forks.
- Macroeconomic conditions: Crypto markets can respond to broader financial conditions, but macro findings do not provide a deterministic BTC-versus-ETH forecast.
How macro conditions can feed into crypto markets
BIS analysis finds that US monetary-policy shocks influence money-market funds and stablecoin market capitalization, with opposite responses in the study. It also finds that crypto-market shocks have limited impact on traditional financial variables in its analysis, and that stablecoins do not act as a safe haven from crypto or traditional financial shocks. These findings describe market transmission; they are not a direct estimate of Bitcoin’s versus Ethereum’s sensitivity or a prediction of relative returns. A useful BTC–ETH risk comparison keeps the measurement window and the question consistent. Check whether a claim concerns historical volatility, a peak-to-trough drawdown, a maximum annual decrease, or time to recover; those are different measures. Then consider market liquidity and leverage, the source of each network’s demand, and the distinct operational risks of proof of work versus proof of stake and smart contracts.

Risk disclosures are not forecasts. One SEC filing describes its investment product with the warning: “Extreme volatility may persist and the value of the Shares may significantly decline in the future without recovery.” That statement refers to the product described in that filing; it should not be treated as a prediction that either BTC or ETH will fail to recover.
