Derivatives and fund flows may intensify a move, but no single factor explains every episode or reliably predicts what Bitcoin will do next.
Why Bitcoin can move sharply
Volatility describes how much and how quickly a price changes. Bitcoin can be volatile because its market must absorb changing demand without a supply that adjusts quickly, while trading positions and investor expectations can shift rapidly. A new shock may begin a move; leverage, liquidations, or activity in related markets can then magnify it.

It is useful to separate the initial cause of a move from mechanisms that amplify it. A change in risk appetite, for example, can prompt selling. If leveraged buyers are then forced to close positions as prices fall, those sales can add further downward pressure. The same interaction can work in the opposite direction during a sharp rise, though liquidations of short positions may then add buying pressure.

How supply and demand affect Bitcoin’s price
CME Group describes Bitcoin supply as highly inelastic: it does not quickly expand or contract in response to a change in demand. When buyers’ willingness to pay changes faster than supply can respond, the price may have to move substantially to bring buyers and sellers into balance. CME’s educational report also describes a feedback relationship between Bitcoin’s price and mining difficulty.
This is a structural explanation, not a formula for forecasting direction. It does not mean mining difficulty determines the price on a particular day, nor does it establish whether a future demand shock will push the market up or down. It helps explain why demand shifts can have a pronounced price effect when available supply is slow to adjust. CME Group’s Bitcoin economics report discusses the supply mechanism.
In practical terms, if demand changes quickly but supply cannot respond at the same pace, price becomes the adjustment mechanism. That can make a change in investor interest more visible in the market price than it would be in a market where supply could respond promptly. The mechanism says something about sensitivity to shifting demand; it does not tell you whether demand is about to rise or fall.

How leverage can turn a move into a cascade
Leverage lets a trader control a position larger than the collateral they put up. That magnifies gains when the market moves in the trader’s favor, but it also leaves less room to absorb a move in the other direction. If collateral falls below an exchange’s or lending platform’s requirements, the position may be closed automatically or the trader may have to add funds.
- Prices move against leveraged positions. A decline reduces the value of a leveraged long position and its remaining collateral.
- Margin requirements are breached. The trader may receive a margin call or the platform may begin liquidating the position under its rules.
- Forced sales add market pressure. Liquidations can increase selling into a falling market rather than waiting for the trader to choose a better time.
- Further liquidations may follow. The additional decline can push other positions below their thresholds, extending the move.
The process can amplify volatility, but it does not explain every decline: an initial shock or change in demand may still be needed to start the move. A Bank for International Settlements (BIS) paper describes forced liquidations in derivatives and DeFi lending as accompanying sharp price falls and volatility spikes. Its March 2026 Quarterly Review gives a more recent episode-specific example: Bitcoin had fallen about 50% from its 2025 highs during a period that also included a decline in technology stocks, and BIS said liquidations of leveraged long crypto positions probably exacerbated the move. That account concerns one episode, not a general explanation for all Bitcoin declines.

Liquidations are therefore best understood as a possible amplifier. A forced sale can add to selling pressure, but the fact that liquidations occurred does not by itself identify what first changed investor demand or risk appetite. Likewise, a sharp decline alone is not proof that leverage caused it; the cited studies support the mechanism and specific examples, not an assumption that every large move has the same cause.
How wider financial markets can spill over
Bitcoin is affected by developments within crypto markets, but changes in broader financial conditions can also matter. When investors become less willing to take risk, they may reduce exposure to multiple kinds of assets. That can create connections between Bitcoin and other markets without making Bitcoin a consistent stand-in for stocks or another asset class.
An International Monetary Fund (IMF) study reported a Bitcoin-stock correlation of 0.36 for 2020–21. That is a historical estimate for the study’s stated period; it is not a current correlation reading and should not be used as one. Separate IMF analysis found that spillovers between crypto and equity markets increased during periods of heightened financial-market volatility and sharp Bitcoin price swings. Those findings describe possible channels of connection, not a rule that Bitcoin always follows equities.
The BIS account of Bitcoin’s fall from its 2025 highs also noted that the episode took place during a decline in technology stocks. The timing offers context for that particular period, but it does not by itself establish that falling technology stocks caused Bitcoin’s decline. See the IMF’s 2022 discussion of crypto and stock-market connections and its 2023 paper on crypto price crashes and contagion.
The correlation figure and the spillover finding answer different questions. The 0.36 estimate describes the relationship between Bitcoin and stocks in a particular historical period; the IMF’s separate finding concerns connections that strengthened during turbulent episodes. Neither is a live reading of current market behavior, and neither establishes a permanent relationship. When considering a new move, treat cross-market developments as context to investigate rather than proof of cause.

How futures and fund flows can add to volatility
Futures carry and leveraged positioning
Futures carry is the difference implied by futures prices relative to the spot market, expressed over time. BIS working-paper research reports that crypto futures carry reached as much as 60% annualized in the periods it studied. The paper links volatile carry to trend-chasing and attention from smaller investors seeking leveraged upside, alongside limited arbitrage capital willing to take the other side. It argues that leverage, spikes in margin requirements, and liquidation risk can help explain severe crashes.
The 60% figure is a reported maximum in that research, not a standing rate, a current market reading, or a signal that a crash is imminent. Carry can vary sharply, and by itself it does not predict when or how large a price move will be. The BIS working paper on crypto carry explains the mechanism.
The paper’s account connects several parts of the market: changing futures carry may attract trend-following attention, leveraged positions can increase exposure to price changes, and limited capital willing to take the other side may leave less capacity to absorb a shift in positioning. That combination can contribute to vulnerability when conditions change. It should not be simplified into “high carry means a crash is coming”; the cited work discusses a mechanism and historical behavior, not a timing signal.
Futures-based funds
A fund that obtains exposure through futures can affect the underlying futures market when its footprint is large relative to that market. BIS examined the first U.S. Bitcoin futures ETF, BITO, and said it was unlikely to create that kind of disruption at the time because it was small relative to the market for its cash-equivalent holdings. That is a historical assessment of one fund and one point in time—not a present-day judgment about all Bitcoin funds. The BIS analysis of the first U.S. Bitcoin futures ETF sets out that assessment.
The important comparison in that assessment is the fund’s footprint relative to the market it uses, rather than the label “futures ETF” alone. A large footprint could matter for the underlying market; the cited analysis did not expect BITO to create that disruption at the time it examined it. The historical conclusion should not be carried forward as a blanket claim about the current size or effects of funds.

How to interpret Bitcoin volatility measures
Volatility figures are not interchangeable. Before comparing two measures, check their time horizon, whether they describe expectations or past price behavior, and which market data and instruments they use.
- Implied volatility is derived from options prices and reflects the market’s pricing of expected price variability over a specified period. It is an expectation, not a guarantee of future movement.
- Realized volatility describes price movement that has already occurred over a specified historical period.
CME CF’s Bitcoin Volatility Index (BVX) and Bitcoin Volatility Index Short Term (BVXS) use order-book data from Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options to measure expected 30-day implied volatility. BVX is described as a real-time benchmark; BVXS is a daily settlement benchmark. They are measures of options-implied expectations, not promises about what Bitcoin will do. Methodology and benchmark descriptions are available from CME Group’s BVX and BVXS page.
To make a fair comparison, match like with like: check that the figures cover the same horizon, distinguish an options-based expectation from historical movement, and note the market and instruments behind each calculation. A number without those details can be misleading. In particular, a 30-day implied-volatility benchmark should not be treated as though it were a record of realized movement over an unspecified past period.
A practical way to understand a sharp move
When Bitcoin moves abruptly, consider these questions in order rather than reaching for a single-cause explanation:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- What changed first? Look for a change in demand, a crypto-market development, or a broader shift in risk appetite that could have started the move.
- Could the market absorb it quickly? Bitcoin supply responds slowly, so a rapid change in demand may require a larger price adjustment.
- Were positions vulnerable to liquidation? Forced closures can amplify a move, but should be described as an accelerator when evidence supports that interpretation—not automatically as its original cause.
- Are other markets moving too? Cross-market connections can help explain context, but a historical correlation or coincident decline does not prove that one market caused another to move.
- What does the volatility figure actually measure? Confirm the time horizon, whether it is implied or realized, and the instruments used before comparing it with another number.
This framework explains mechanisms and helps distinguish a market shock from amplification. It cannot reliably forecast Bitcoin’s next move: the forces involved vary by episode, and a measure of expected or past volatility is not a guarantee of future direction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Bitcoin so volatile?
Bitcoin’s supply does not quickly adjust when demand changes, so price may have to move substantially to bring buyers and sellers into balance. Broader shifts in risk appetite and leveraged positions can add to the move, while forced liquidations may amplify it. No single factor explains every episode.
Does Bitcoin always move with stocks?
No. IMF research reported a Bitcoin-stock correlation of 0.36 for 2020–21 and found crypto-equity spillovers increased during turbulent periods, but those findings are historical and do not mean Bitcoin always tracks stocks. A simultaneous move in two markets does not, by itself, prove that one caused the other.
Can liquidations cause a Bitcoin price drop?
Forced liquidations can add selling pressure and deepen a decline, and one liquidation can contribute to further liquidations if prices fall. They may amplify a move without being its original cause. BIS said leveraged long-position liquidations probably exacerbated Bitcoin’s fall of about 50% from its 2025 highs in the episode discussed in its March 2026 review.
What does futures carry of up to 60% mean?
BIS working-paper research reported crypto futures carry of up to 60% annualized during the periods it studied. It is a historical maximum in that research, not a current rate or a prediction that a crash is imminent. The paper links changing carry to trend-chasing, leveraged upside exposure, and limited arbitrage capital.
What is the difference between implied and realized Bitcoin volatility?
Implied volatility is derived from options prices and reflects market pricing of expected variability over a specified horizon. Realized volatility describes price movement that has already happened. CME CF’s BVX and BVXS use Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options order-book data for expected 30-day implied volatility; BVX is a real-time benchmark and BVXS a daily settlement benchmark.
The Bottom Line
Bitcoin’s sharp price swings are best understood as the result of interacting forces: demand meets a supply that adjusts slowly, broader risk shifts can spill across markets, and leverage can turn price declines into liquidation cascades. Derivatives and funds may add to positioning effects, but historical findings and volatility measures are not forecasts. Check the episode, period, and measurement before assigning a cause.
