Realized volatility calculates the dispersion of past Bitcoin returns over a stated window. Implied volatility works backward from option prices to estimate how much movement the options market is pricing for a future horizon. The two numbers answer different questions, and neither is a guaranteed forecast.
To interpret any reading, match its time horizon, annualization convention, data source, market coverage and timestamp. A 30-day option-implied index cannot be compared casually with a 14-day realized series calculated from hourly prices. The difference may reflect methodology rather than a change in market expectations.

What Bitcoin volatility actually measures
Volatility is a statistical description of the size of price changes. It is usually expressed as an annualized percentage based on returns, so a reading of 60% means the measured variability has been scaled to an annual convention; it does not mean Bitcoin will rise or fall 60% over the next year.

A volatile market can produce a large gain, a large loss, or alternating gains and losses. Volatility says “how much movement,” while a directional view says “which way.” You need a separate thesis to infer direction, and volatility alone cannot provide one.

Return size is the input
Volatility is calculated from returns rather than raw dollar changes. A simple return is (Pt - Pt-1) / Pt-1. Analysts may instead use the continuously compounded, or log, return ln(Pt / Pt-1). The choice matters, especially when moves are large.
The result also depends on the sampling interval (for example, five-minute, hourly or daily observations), the exchange or price index used, the look-back window, the treatment of missing observations and the annualization factor. Two services can report different “Bitcoin volatility” values while both are correctly calculating their chosen definition.
Volatility is not the same as a price range
A daily high-low range describes one session’s spread. Realized volatility uses a series of returns and summarizes their dispersion. A market can post a wide range on one day but have modest volatility over a month if other days are quiet, or show high volatility through many moderate moves without one dramatic range.
Realized volatility: a backward-looking measurement
Realized volatility, sometimes called historical volatility, is computed from returns that have already occurred. It answers: “How variable were Bitcoin returns during this specified past interval?” It does not automatically describe what options traders expect next.
A transparent calculation
Suppose you collect n daily log returns over a 30-day window. Calculate their sample standard deviation, s, then annualize it:
Realized volatility = s × √(number of trading or observation periods per year)

Crypto trades continuously, so analysts commonly use 365 daily observations for a daily series, giving s × √365. A provider using 252 observations, an hourly series, or a different convention will produce another annualized number. State the convention beside the result.

If the standard deviation of a set of daily returns is 4%, annualizing with 365 days gives approximately 0.04 × √365 = 0.764, or 76.4%. This is only an illustration of the math, not a Bitcoin market reading. It describes the dispersion in the selected sample and says nothing about the sign of the next return.
Choices that can change the answer
- Window: A seven-day estimate reacts quickly to a shock; a 90-day estimate smooths it with older observations.
- Sampling: Hourly data captures more short-term movement than daily closes, but it also introduces exchange outages, timestamp alignment and microstructure effects.
- Price source: Bitcoin trades on many venues. A single exchange, a composite index and a futures settlement price can have different returns.
- Return definition: Simple and log returns diverge more when moves are unusually large.
- Annualization: The square-root-of-time scaling is a convention, not a law. Volatility clustering and jumps mean real markets do not scale perfectly across horizons.
Implied volatility: what option prices are pricing
Implied volatility is inferred from traded option prices. An option price reflects several inputs, including the underlying price, strike, time to expiry, interest rates, contract terms and supply and demand. A pricing model or variance-based methodology solves for the volatility level consistent with the observed option price.
It answers a different question: “What level of future variability is embedded in option prices for this option’s horizon and methodology?” It is forward-looking in that sense, but it is not a promise that realized volatility will equal the implied figure. Option prices can include risk premia, hedging demand, liquidity effects and model assumptions.
Why the option horizon matters
An option expiring in seven days can price a very different uncertainty level from one expiring in six months. Implied-volatility indexes often interpolate option quotes to a constant maturity, such as 30 days, so the index remains comparable from one observation to the next. Always identify the tenor before comparing an implied number with a realized number.

For a given strike and expiry, a higher option premium generally corresponds to a higher volatility input after other variables are held in the model. Out-of-the-money puts and calls can carry different implied volatilities, producing a volatility “smile” or “skew.” An index must specify which strikes it uses and how it combines them. A variance-swap-style calculation uses a strip of option prices rather than one contract, which makes the methodology different from quoting the implied volatility of a single at-the-money option.

Realized versus implied volatility
| Comparison point | Realized volatility | Implied volatility |
|---|---|---|
| Primary input | Observed historical returns | Prices of traded options |
| Time orientation | Backward-looking window | Option-linked future horizon |
| Typical output | Dispersion of returns in the sample | Volatility level consistent with option prices and methodology |
| Key choices | Sampling interval, return type, window, data source and annualization | Expiry, strikes, interpolation, option liquidity, model or variance methodology and annualization |
| Market coverage | Whatever price series is selected | Whatever options venue and contracts are included |
| What it does not establish | Future volatility or price direction | A guaranteed future outcome or price direction |
A gap between implied and realized volatility can be meaningful, but only after these definitions are aligned. If 30-day implied volatility is compared with 90-day realized volatility, or one uses annualized daily closes while the other uses intraday options, the apparent gap may be a measurement mismatch.
Does high Bitcoin volatility mean the price will rise or fall?
No. Volatility is direction-neutral. A 10% rise and a 10% fall contribute similar magnitude to a volatility calculation, although the exact return convention can make their statistical contributions slightly different.
High volatility can accompany a sustained rally, a sell-off, a sharp reversal or a choppy market that ends near its starting price. To study direction, use a separate analysis of trend, positioning, valuation, flows or other evidence; do not treat a volatility index as a bullish or bearish signal by itself.

CME’s BVX and BVXS: a concrete benchmark example
CME CF Bitcoin Volatility Index Real-Time (BVX) is a 30-day constant-maturity Bitcoin implied-volatility index. CME says it is built from Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options and published every second during CME trading hours. Its methodology describes the index as measuring the 30-day constant-maturity implied volatility of Bitcoin using a standard variance-swap pricing approach.
CME CF Bitcoin Volatility Index Settlement (BVXS) is a related daily benchmark. CME describes its settlement as an average of six five-minute partitions during the stated settlement window. BVX and BVXS are both methodology-specific measures from CME’s options market; they are not a complete gauge of every global Bitcoin transaction or option.
| Feature | BVX | BVXS |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Real-time 30-day constant-maturity implied volatility | Daily settlement benchmark for the same type of volatility measure |
| Publication cadence | Every second during CME trading hours, according to CME | One daily settlement calculated from six five-minute partitions |
| Underlying data | CME Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options | CME options observations used in the settlement window |
| Coverage | CME’s options market, not all global Bitcoin activity | CME’s options market and its defined settlement window |
In a May 5, 2026 announcement, CME said Bitcoin Volatility futures would settle to BVX and described the index as a 30-day forward-looking implied-volatility measure derived from CME Bitcoin-options order books. The CFTC product filing lists Bitcoin Volatility Futures. Futures availability, contract specifications and trading status can change, so verify current exchange documentation before relying on those details. Do not confuse the BVX index with the futures contract that references it.

How to compare a realized reading with an implied reading
- Match the horizon. Compare a 30-day implied measure with a realized measure covering approximately 30 days, not an unrelated six-month window.
- Match the annualization. Confirm whether both figures use 365, 252, an intraday observation count or another convention.
- Match the underlying and venue. A CME-options index and a spot series from one exchange may have different coverage and price formation.
- Match the timestamp. Record the exact date and time. Volatility can change rapidly after a large move, and a daily settlement may not equal a real-time value later that day.
- Read the methodology. Check return type, option strikes, interpolation, liquidity filters, missing-data rules and whether the number is a single option’s implied volatility or a strip-based index.
- Interpret the spread cautiously. Implied above recent realized volatility may indicate that options are pricing more future uncertainty, a risk premium or protection demand. Implied below realized volatility may indicate calmer pricing or that the recent shock is expected to fade. Neither relationship guarantees what happens next.
What the historical 2021 figures do—and do not—show
A CME filing discussing Bitcoin Futures reported approximately 120% annualized realized volatility in February 2021, an average of about 70% over the preceding three years, and approximately 56% 30-day volatility at the beginning of April 2021. These figures belong to that 2021 instrument and reporting context. They are historical examples, not current estimates of Bitcoin volatility.
Using an old percentage without its date, window and instrument can create a false impression of present market conditions. A current reading requires a current, clearly defined data series.
Why Bitcoin price swings can look different across charts
Different clocks produce different stories
A chart of five-minute returns can show intense intraday movement while a daily-close series appears calmer. Conversely, a large move that occurs between daily closes may be understated by a close-to-close measure. Neither is automatically “the” volatility; each answers a different question.
Jumps and volatility clustering
Returns often arrive in clusters: quiet periods can be followed by several large moves. A short rolling window therefore jumps after a shock and then declines as the observation rolls out. Annualization also assumes a scaling relationship that real markets can violate when jumps or clustering dominate.
Venue and liquidity effects
Bitcoin’s fragmented spot market and the separate options market mean that an index reflects its selected instruments and liquidity. A thin option book can widen premiums, while a composite spot index can smooth differences among venues. Treat the data source as part of the definition, not as a footnote.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical framework for reading a volatility number
| Question | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What period? | Look-back window or option expiry | Short and long horizons can diverge sharply |
| Which market? | Spot, futures, or a named options venue | Prices and liquidity are not identical across markets |
| Which calculation? | Return convention, strikes, interpolation and annualization | Methodology can create differences without a real expectation change |
| When was it measured? | Timestamp or settlement window | Volatility is time-sensitive, especially after a shock |
| What decision is it informing? | Risk sizing, hedging cost, or descriptive analysis | The same number has different relevance for different tasks |
For education and reporting, write the definition beside the number: for example, “30-day constant-maturity implied volatility from CME Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options” or “30-day annualized realized volatility from daily log returns using a specified price index.” That wording prevents a precise-looking percentage from being detached from its meaning.
Best Value
Common interpretation mistakes
“Volatility is 80%, so Bitcoin will move 80%.”
An annualized volatility is a dispersion statistic, not a guaranteed range. It does not set a maximum move, predict a return or imply that exactly 80% of future price movement will occur.
“Implied volatility is a forecast.”
It is a market-implied price of uncertainty under a stated options methodology. Risk premia, hedging demand, liquidity and model assumptions can make it differ from subsequently realized volatility.
“The highest volatility index identifies the best trade.”
Different indexes may measure different venues, tenors and calculation rules. A higher number is not, by itself, a buy or sell signal.
“Realized and implied numbers are interchangeable.”
They are related but not identical. One summarizes observed returns; the other is extracted from option prices. Compare them only after aligning horizon, annualization, timestamp and coverage.
“A benchmark covers the entire Bitcoin market.”
BVX and BVXS are CME-specific benchmarks based on the options and procedures CME defines. They can be useful reference points without representing every spot exchange, derivatives venue or private transaction.
Bottom line for readers
Realized volatility tells you how variable Bitcoin returns were over a defined past sample. Implied volatility tells you what a defined options market is charging for uncertainty over a future tenor. Both measure magnitude, not direction. The most reliable interpretation starts with the label: window, annualization, data source, methodology and timestamp. Without those details, a volatility percentage is easy to quote and easy to misunderstand.
