Spot Bitcoin is the asset; a perpetual future is a contract tied to its price. Buying spot without borrowing means paying for the Bitcoin you acquire. A perpetual can provide long or short price exposure with margin, but it adds variable funding payments and the possibility of liquidation. Which costs less or carries less risk depends on the venue, contract, position, and holding period.
What changes when you trade spot instead of a perpetual?
The word “Bitcoin” can describe two different things in a trading interface: the coin changing hands in the spot market, or a derivative contract whose value tracks Bitcoin. Check the product name and specification rather than assuming every BTC-labelled trade gives you the same exposure.

| Consideration | Unleveraged spot | Perpetual futures |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | Bitcoin bought or sold in the spot market. | A derivative position; contract and settlement currency depend on the venue. |
| Direction | A purchase gains value if Bitcoin rises. Shorting usually requires borrowing the asset or using another instrument. | Long and short positions are available under the contract rules. |
| Trading and holding costs | Trading fees. Borrowing or rollover costs can apply if you use spot margin. | Trading fees and potentially periodic funding, which can be paid or received. |
| Leverage | A fully paid, unleveraged purchase requires the full purchase amount. Spot margin adds borrowed funds. | Margin can provide exposure greater than the collateral posted; leverage and margin tiers vary. |
| Liquidation | A fully paid, unleveraged asset is not subject to futures-style liquidation, though its market value can fall and custody or platform risks remain. Spot margin can be liquidated. | The venue may close the position if it no longer meets maintenance-margin or other contract requirements. |
| Expiry | The Bitcoin asset itself has no futures expiry. | A true perpetual has no ordinary expiry. Products called “perpetual-style” may have a fixed expiry, so check the contract. |
This is a conceptual comparison, not a claim that every venue offers identical products. For example, Kraken describes spot-margin transactions as borrowed spot trades with separate opening and rollover fees; Binance distinguishes spot-market margin from futures. Product specifications and fees are venue-specific.
Spot is not the same as spot margin
A fully paid spot purchase does not borrow money to increase exposure. Spot margin still trades in the spot market, but borrowed funds can enlarge the position and introduce borrowing charges and liquidation risk. Keep those cases separate when comparing a spot purchase with a perpetual.

How to compare the full cost
Compare the expected cost for the actual position and holding period, not just the trading-fee figure shown on a fee page. A lower maker or taker rate alone does not establish that one product is cheaper.
- For spot: include the entry and exit trade fees. If the trade uses spot margin, also account for applicable borrowing or rollover charges.
- For a perpetual: include entry and exit trade fees, then estimate funding over the intended holding period. Funding can change in both rate and direction, so the amount paid or received is not fixed in advance.
- For either product: use the venue’s current schedule for the relevant account tier and order type. Include position changes and other applicable contract charges when estimating the total.
A useful comparison is the total expected cost of opening, holding, and closing the same intended exposure under each product’s rules. The result depends on venue, account tier, order type, position side, holding time, realized funding, and position management; there is no universal fee winner.

How perpetual funding works
Funding is a periodic payment between holders of long and short perpetual positions, according to the venue’s formula. It is intended to help keep the perpetual contract aligned with its reference price. It is separate from the trading commission, and a position may pay funding or receive it.

On Binance, a positive funding rate means longs pay shorts; a negative rate means shorts pay longs. Binance’s explanation of perpetual mechanics also states that perpetual contracts have no expiration or settlement. Because funding is variable, a rate observed at entry does not establish what the position will pay or receive over a longer hold. Check the exact contract’s funding rules and the venue’s current rate information when estimating costs. Funding deductions may also affect position margin and liquidation price under venue rules.
How leverage changes exposure and risk
Leverage is exposure relative to collateral. For futures, Coinbase describes it as the contract’s notional value divided by its initial margin requirement. The amount of leverage available is not a recommended amount to use: a larger position relative to collateral leaves less room to absorb an adverse move before margin requirements become critical. Leverage magnifies gains and losses on the exposure; it does not improve the trade thesis or change Bitcoin’s underlying price movement. The advertised maximum is not a measure of what is prudent for a particular account. Position size, collateral, initial margin, maintenance margin, and the venue’s contract rules all affect the outcome.

Liquidation is a venue’s process for closing a margined position when it no longer meets required margin conditions. In a perpetual, the relevant thresholds and trigger prices depend on the specific contract and exchange. Maintenance margin is central: if the position or account falls below the venue’s requirement, the venue may begin auto-liquidation.

It is not always just a question of how far Bitcoin’s price moved. Mark-price rules, funding deductions, collateral changes, position size, and changes in applicable margin rates can also matter. Kraken notes that spot-margin risk depends on open position size relative to collateral, not only on the selected leverage level. Coinbase documents an example where a margin-rate transition changes an account’s risk measure enough to trigger liquidation without a price move. These illustrate why there is no universal liquidation-price formula.
What to check before estimating a liquidation point
- The contract’s definition of mark price and the price reference used for risk checks.
- The maintenance-margin schedule, including any tiers tied to position size.
- How the venue treats collateral and whether its value can change for margin purposes.
- How funding is charged or credited and whether deductions affect margin.
- How margin-rate changes, liquidation handling, and any liquidation fees apply to that product.
Use the venue’s current contract specifications and risk documentation for an estimate; a simple leverage rule cannot reliably predict or prevent liquidation. Rules can differ between products, including between spot margin and derivatives on the same platform.
Check whether “perpetual-style” really means perpetual
A true perpetual contract has no ordinary expiry. However, product labels are not a substitute for the instrument specification. Coinbase’s US overview describes its “perpetual-style futures” as five-year contracts and states that current contracts expire on December 20, 2030, with hourly funding. That description applies to the product and contracts covered by that overview, not to perpetuals generally. Confirm the exact instrument’s expiry, funding schedule, and settlement terms before trading.

- Identify the product. Confirm whether the trade is unleveraged spot, spot margin, or a derivative, and whether the contract truly has no expiry.
- Match the exposure. Compare positions with the same intended Bitcoin price exposure, while noting that collateral and shorting mechanics differ.
- Estimate the full holding-period cost. Add entry and exit fees; for spot margin include borrowing or rollover charges, and for a perpetual include variable funding.
- Review the risk rules. Check leverage and margin tiers, mark-price methodology, maintenance margin, collateral treatment, funding effects, and liquidation procedures for the exact product.
- Verify availability and current terms. Venue access and product rules vary by jurisdiction and can change. Coinbase’s US derivatives pages do not establish eligibility or legal status outside the United States; check the venue’s current regional terms.
This comparison is about product mechanics, not a personalized trading recommendation. A fully paid spot holding avoids margin liquidation mechanics, while a perpetual offers different shorting and leverage possibilities at the cost of additional contract and margin rules. Choose only after understanding the exposure and terms that apply to your account.
