CoinDesk’s live coverage, which ended at 5:00 p.m. EDT, said the 24-hour loss had narrowed to about 2%. These are historical session figures, not current market quotes.
How Bitcoin moved during Thursday’s session
CoinDesk reported that Bitcoin briefly dropped below $81,000, its lowest level since September 21. Earlier in the decline, the cryptocurrency was more than 8% below a level near $87,000 recorded four days earlier. At the time of the move below $81,000, Glassnode data cited by CoinDesk estimated that roughly 6.4 million BTC were held at a loss.

By late afternoon, Bitcoin had gained ground and was trading near $81,800 as U.S. stocks closed. CoinDesk said the 24-hour loss had narrowed to about 2%. The closing update noted that Bitcoin had earlier been at risk of falling below $80,000; it did not report that the price actually crossed that level.
Why Bitcoin fell—and why it bounced
CoinDesk described several issues traders were watching rather than establishing a single cause for the decline: concern about the future of cryptography, rising oil prices and interest rates, the approaching anniversary of the October 2025 flash crash, and AI-related jitters weighing on technology stocks.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
In its late-session account, CoinDesk linked Bitcoin’s recovery to cooler heads on the cryptography issue, a reversal lower in interest rates, and a bounce in the technology sector. That is the report’s explanation of the session, not proof that any one factor caused Bitcoin’s price moves.
What happened to Treasury yields and oil?
Treasury yields reversed from session highs
CoinDesk reported that the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.36% before moving down to 5.22%; the 30-year yield reached 5.73% before falling to 5.60%. The report said the reason for the reversal was difficult to determine. It proposed that a decline in the Nasdaq may have sent money into bonds, but presented that as a possible explanation.

Oil prices rose, then fell during the reported chronology
An earlier CoinDesk update said WTI crude had risen above $93 a barrel and Brent above $105 after a tanker attack off Qatar. It later reported comments from President Trump that he would not attack Iran before the midterm elections, alongside a decline in oil prices. These were developments described in the October 8 live coverage, not current oil prices or a current geopolitical update.
Was cryptocurrency cryptography under imminent threat?
CoinDesk covered a viral warning that AI could put cryptocurrency cryptography at imminent risk, alongside a rebuttal from Coinbase head of cryptography Yehuda Lindell. Lindell told CoinDesk: “There is no evidence whatsoever pointing to a break of decades old hardness assumptions like elliptic curve cryptography.” The article records a disagreement; it does not independently establish either the warning or the rebuttal as a technical finding.

Why the October 2025 flash crash was on traders’ minds
The live report connected market attention to the approaching one-year anniversary of the October 10, 2025 flash crash. CoinDesk described Bitcoin falling from about $122,000 to $105,000, with much of the move taking place within minutes during thin Friday-evening U.S. trading. That episode was historical context for the October 8, 2026 session, not evidence that the two selloffs had the same cause.

In a separate item included in its coverage, CoinDesk summarized a State Street survey of 300 asset managers, asset owners, and wealth managers. According to that secondary reporting, about 51% of respondents expected digital assets to become mainstream within five years, compared with 11% in 2024; institutions held an average of 11% of their portfolios in digital assets. These are figures attributed to the survey as summarized by CoinDesk, not independently verified here.
