Bitcoin Near $84,000: $143 Million in Liquidations, but ETF Flow Dates Differ

Bitcoin’s $142.87 million in reported liquidations came alongside ETF figures from different dates: an October 5 outflow and a separate report of positive year-to-date flows.

Bitcoin was reported near $84,000 on October 7, 2026, alongside $142.87 million in Bitcoin liquidations over the prior 24 hours. But ETF flows did not turn positive on that same date: the report recorded U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF net outflows on October 5. A separate September 25 report said year-to-date ETF flows had returned to positive territory. Those figures describe different dates and measurement windows, not one synchronized event.

What happened to Bitcoin near $84,000?

The Crypto Times reported Bitcoin at $84,164.72 on October 7, 2026, down 1.0% over 24 hours. The article, citing CoinGecko, gave a session high of $86,648.14 and a low of $83,647.88. These are reported observations from that article, not a live quote.

The same October 7 report said CoinGlass data showed $546.89 million in liquidations across the entire crypto market over 24 hours. Bitcoin’s share was $142.87 million, so the Bitcoin-only figure should not be confused with the larger market-wide total. The Crypto Times’ October 7 report attributes the price and liquidation figures to CoinGecko and CoinGlass.

What do the $143 million in Bitcoin liquidations mean?

A liquidation is an exchange’s forced closure of a leveraged position when the trader’s available collateral no longer covers losses. According to the CoinGlass figures reported by The Crypto Times, Bitcoin liquidations comprised $129.07 million in long positions and $13.80 million in short positions over 24 hours. Longs are positions betting on a price increase; shorts bet on a decline.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

The long-heavy split indicates that most of the reported Bitcoin forced closures were from traders positioned for prices to rise. Liquidations can intensify a price move as positions are closed, but these figures alone do not identify what initially caused Bitcoin to fall.

Did Bitcoin ETF inflows turn positive at the same time?

No single ETF-flow figure in the cited reports matches the October 7 liquidation window. The Crypto Times reported, citing SoSoValue, that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $89.9 million in net outflows on October 5, following about $293 million in combined inflows over the two preceding trading sessions. It also reported $2.18 billion in total ETF trading volume and $57.7 billion in cumulative net inflows since launch. These are figures with distinct measurement periods, not evidence that daily flows were positive on October 7. See The Crypto Times’ account of the SoSoValue data.

Separately, CoinDesk reported on September 25 that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs had nearly $800 million in year-to-date net inflows. That positive balance followed a reported year-to-date deficit of $5.8 billion on July 13. CoinDesk also cited about $4 billion in ETF inflows since August and a six-day streak totaling $2.84 billion as of its article. These figures describe different time windows from October 5’s daily outflow. CoinDesk’s September 25 report said the 2026 year-to-date positive balance remained well below the net inflows reported for 2024 and 2025.

How to read the apparently conflicting figures

  • Daily flows: A single trading day can show net outflows even when a longer period is positive.
  • Year-to-date flows: A positive cumulative balance means inflows over the measured period exceed outflows; it does not mean every day had inflows.
  • Liquidations: Keep Bitcoin’s $142.87 million separate from the $546.89 million total for all crypto assets, and note that Bitcoin liquidations were heavily concentrated in longs.

Accordingly, a positive year-to-date ETF balance does not rule out a Bitcoin price decline, and the reports do not establish that ETF flows caused the October 7 move.

A separate September rally should not be mixed into the October decline

Web3 Week Asia’s September 22 analysis described a different event: Bitcoin briefly rose above $87,000 during the September 21 rally. It cited $746.6 million in total liquidations, including $647.9 million in short liquidations, and $433 million in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF inflows on September 18. The outlet characterized that rally as substantially supported by a short squeeze; that is its analysis of the earlier event, not an explanation for the October 7 decline. Web3 Week Asia’s September 22 analysis provides that separate account.
