Bitcoin Miner Noise: Which dB Ratings Matter for Sleep?

A dB rating alone cannot predict whether a miner will disturb sleep. Compare measurement conditions, operating modes and changing sounds at the intended bed position.

A miner’s dB rating is a useful first filter, but it cannot tell you on its own whether the machine will be tolerable beside a sleeping person. To compare devices, you need the measurement conditions—especially weighting, distance, operating mode and whether the number is an average or a peak—and you need to consider the sound at the bed, not just the spec sheet.

What does the bedroom noise guidance actually say?

The World Health Organization’s community-noise guidance recommends less than 30 dB(A) indoors in bedrooms at night for good-quality sleep. That is an indoor, A-weighted recommendation—not a universal pass/fail limit for a particular miner or a guarantee that every sleeper will rest comfortably at that level. WHO’s 2009 Night Noise Guidelines for Europe reproduce earlier community-noise guidance stating that continuous indoor noise should not exceed 30 dBA if negative effects on sleep are to be avoided. The same guidance notes that non-continuous noise is best described by its maximum level, LAmax, and that sleep effects have been observed at 45 dB or less, particularly when background noise is low. Those observations do not establish a personal threshold for a miner.

Do not confuse that bedroom recommendation with WHO’s European night-noise targets of 40 dB Lnight, outside and a 55 dB interim target. These are annual-average outdoor indicators for regional policy, not indoor bedroom limits or product ratings. WHO’s 2009 guidance describes those targets in their outdoor, annual-average context.

Why a single dB figure is an incomplete comparison

A sound level is meaningful only alongside the conditions under which it was measured. Distance matters: a reading near a device cannot be compared directly with one taken farther away. A-weighting (shown as dB(A) or dBA) indicates a particular frequency weighting; a bare dB figure may not tell you whether the same weighting was used. The room, background noise, operating mode, electrical or thermal load, fan behavior, and whether the figure represents an average or a maximum can all change what the number tells you.

For bedroom planning, a reading taken at the intended bed position, in the mode you plan to use overnight, is more relevant than isolated headline figures. Keep the room layout and background conditions consistent when comparing devices or modes. A phone app or consumer sound meter can help you make a relative comparison, but one uncalibrated reading is not a certified exposure assessment.

What the Avalon Mini 3’s published rating does—and does not—tell you

Canaan lists the Avalon Mini 3 at 35–55 dB and specifies that its 35 dB result was measured in Heater mode at 500 W with an ambient temperature of 25°C. Canaan does not state the measurement distance in that note, so the 35 dB figure should not be treated as a predicted reading at a bed or as a result for every mode. Canaan’s product page also describes Night mode as “ultra-quiet” and says it “continuously takes care of your sleep.” That is manufacturer wording, not an independently established sleep outcome.

The operating mode changes the use case. Canaan’s support documentation describes a 500 W Eco heater setting and an 800 W Super setting, as well as Night mode, which adjusts fan speed in real time to minimize noise. Mining mode may be noisier than Heater mode. The documentation does not give sound readings for every mode, so it does not support a precise noise comparison among them. Canaan’s Avalon Mini 3 support documentation explains the modes and controls.

Steady fan noise or cycling: which is worse for sleep?

There is no controlled evidence here comparing steady fan noise with a miner’s fan or heater cycling, and no source establishes that one pattern is always more disruptive. A steady airflow sound and a sound that changes in level or starts and stops are different experiences; which one bothers a particular sleeper cannot be inferred from a product’s dB rating. For intermittent changes, the maximum level and the size and timing of the changes matter alongside an average reading.

Community reports can describe individual experiences, but they are anecdotal and do not prove that a device will—or will not—wake someone consistently overnight. Test the planned mode at the bed while you are awake, and listen through fan-speed changes or heater cycling rather than judging only a short, quiet interval.

A practical way to compare miners for overnight use

  1. Check what each published figure means. Record whether it is dB or dB(A), the measurement distance and environment, the operating mode and load, and whether it is an average or maximum. If a manufacturer does not state a condition, do not assume it.
  2. Choose the mode and load you would actually use. Compare the same mode and, where possible, the same wattage or thermal load. Note fan ramps, tonal whine, pulsing, vibration, or other changing sounds; two similar averages can still sound different.
  3. Measure at the intended bed position. Keep the meter or phone in the same location and keep background conditions and room layout consistent. A consumer meter or app is useful for comparing your own conditions, not for certifying exposure.
  4. Observe the full operating pattern. Listen through fan changes and any heater cycling. Compare both the general level and the louder or abrupt moments instead of relying on one snapshot.
  5. Account for heat as well as noise. Heater output and the room’s ability to distribute or exhaust heat affect whether the planned overnight setup is suitable. Do not block airflow or enclose a miner without accounting for its cooling requirements.

There is no standardized cross-brand bedroom test protocol in the cited sources. The most useful comparison is therefore a consistent, room-level one under the conditions you intend to use—not a ranking assembled from unrelated spec-sheet numbers.
