Bitcoin Investing FAQ: Volatility, U.S. Taxes, and Common Risks

Bitcoin is treated as property for U.S. federal tax purposes, and selling it for dollars generally means recognizing a gain or loss. Learn about volatility, custody risks, and 2025 IRS reporting guidance.

Bitcoin can rise or fall sharply, and selling it for U.S. dollars generally triggers a federal tax gain-or-loss calculation. For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, the IRS treats Bitcoin as property; that does not make Bitcoin a low-risk investment or make tax reporting optional.

How volatile is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin’s value can change substantially. A person who needs to sell during a downturn may realize a significant loss. Past price movement is not a forecast, and a historical range should not be mistaken for today’s price.

One SEC-filed issuer annual report said Bitcoin traded below $77,000 and above $126,000 on BitGo during 2025. That is a range reported for that venue and period, not a market-wide daily closing range or a prediction: the issuer’s 2025 annual report.

What are the common risks of investing in Bitcoin?

Issuer disclosures identify risks including volatility, rapid price declines, theft, manipulation, security failures, and operational problems. These are risks described in filings, not a complete list or an estimate of how likely any event is. The filings do not establish a general statistic for Bitcoin investor outcomes.

Custody and account protections

How Bitcoin is held matters. One issuer-specific filing says that issuer’s Bitcoin holdings were not held at an FDIC- or SIPC-member institution and therefore lacked those institutions’ depositor protections. That statement applies to the described holdings, not automatically to every Bitcoin product or custody arrangement: the issuer’s custody disclosure.

The SEC Division of Trading and Markets’ FAQ addresses broker-dealer and transfer-agent rules for crypto activities. Its introduction says the responses represent staff views, are not a Commission rule, and have no legal force or effect. Commissioner Hester M. Peirce’s related statement reminds investors of risks they may face when holding non-security crypto assets through a broker. Neither source guarantees the protections of a particular account: SEC staff FAQ and related statement.

Income and product differences

A filing discussing an issuer’s Bitcoin holdings says those holdings do not pay interest or dividends. That does not describe every product offering indirect Bitcoin exposure or every lending arrangement; check the terms and risks of the specific product rather than assuming it works like direct ownership.

How are Bitcoin and other digital assets taxed federally?

For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property. It says: “Digital assets are treated as property, and the general tax principles applicable to all property transactions also apply to transactions involving digital assets.” See IRS digital-asset FAQ 48.

If you sell digital assets for U.S. dollars or similar currency, IRS FAQ 49 says you must recognize any capital gain or loss, subject to limitations on deducting capital losses. The amount depends on your circumstances, including your basis, sale proceeds, and holding period; this is general information, not an individual tax calculation. See IRS digital-asset FAQ 49.

Which IRS guidance and forms apply to 2025 transactions?

The IRS says its older virtual-currency FAQs generally apply to transactions completed before January 1, 2025. Its digital-asset FAQ page points to guidance for transactions on or after that date. For 2025 dispositions of digital assets held as capital assets, IRS Publication 544 directs taxpayers to calculate the transactions on Form 8949 and report them on Schedule D: IRS virtual-currency FAQ scope and IRS Publication 544 (2025).

What a Form 1099-DA does—and does not—tell you

In a January 28, 2026 reminder about 2025 reporting, the IRS said brokers must send taxpayers the Form 1099-DA information they report to the IRS by February 17, 2026. The IRS also said most 2025 statements would not include basis, so taxpayers need to calculate basis to determine gain or loss. You must report related income, gains, or losses even if you do not receive a Form 1099-DA: IRS Tax Tip 2026-07.

These dates and instructions concern the stated 2025 filing context. Tax forms and reporting rules can change; check current IRS instructions for the year you are filing.

What this FAQ does not establish

The tax discussion is limited to U.S. federal rules. It does not establish state or non-U.S. tax treatment, and it does not compare particular Bitcoin funds, broker accounts, or custody products. Those can differ in custody, fees, liquidity, trading hours, applicable protections, tax documents, and whether exposure is direct or through a security; check the actual product documents before drawing a comparison.
