A multi-chain wallet’s Bitcoin support is not one feature. Check three things separately: whether it can handle the Bitcoin address format you need, how it estimates transaction fees, and what its custody and verification model actually lets you do. A wallet’s chain count alone does not establish any of them.
What does a bc1 address mean?
A Bitcoin address beginning with bc1 uses Bech32, an address format made possible by Segregated Witness (SegWit). It is commonly called a native SegWit address. Bitcoin.org distinguishes Bech32 addresses from older Bitcoin address formats, which commonly begin with 1 or 3. These are Bitcoin-specific formats; “multi-chain” does not mean that SegWit is a feature shared across every network in the app.

The address’s appearance does not prove that every wallet, exchange, or service can send to it or receive from it. Bitcoin.org cautions that some wallets and services do not support Bech32. Check the exact wallet version and the other service involved in the transfer rather than inferring compatibility from the app’s branding. See Bitcoin.org’s wallet comparison.
Can Bitcoin move between legacy and SegWit addresses?
Address format compatibility is a software and service question, not a rule that can be answered just by looking at two addresses. Before sending, confirm that the receiving service accepts the specific address format. If an older wallet or exchange cannot handle Bech32, it may require a legacy address instead.

For a high-value transfer, consider sending a small test amount first. Before confirming any transaction, verify the entire destination address; a confirmed Bitcoin transaction is not ordinarily reversible by the sender.
How does automatic Bitcoin fee selection work?
An automatic fee is a wallet’s estimate or suggested fee for a transaction, based on network conditions and often an intended confirmation target. Bitcoin Core’s developer reference documents confirmation targets measured in blocks, “economical” and “conservative” estimation modes, and an option to specify a fee rate in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB). These are ways to estimate or choose a fee—not guarantees about when a transaction will confirm. The reference’s six-block target is an example, not a promise of confirmation within six blocks. See the Bitcoin Core developer reference.

“Automatic” does not necessarily mean that the fee is hidden or cannot be reviewed. Bitcoin.org says wallets generally add what they consider an appropriate fee, and many allow the user to review it before sending. Wallet interfaces differ: inspect the quoted fee and any available speed or fee controls before signing. Do not assume an unspecified multi-chain wallet offers a particular setting or explains its target; check that wallet’s current documentation.

Bitcoin transaction fees depend on demand for block space and the transaction’s size, not simply on the amount of bitcoin being sent. A transaction that uses several previously received amounts or involves multisig can be larger and cost more. Bitcoin.org summarizes the relationship this way: “Transactions are typically processed with a fee, and fees vary over time with demand for space in the blockchain.” See its FAQ on fees and confirmation.

Bitcoin.org says blocks are added approximately every ten minutes on average, but block discovery is probabilistic. A transaction paying below the fee level currently prioritized by miners may wait considerably longer for its first confirmation. Neither an average block interval nor a wallet’s fee estimate gives an exact confirmation deadline.

Evaluate Bitcoin capabilities independently. A wallet may support one address format but not another, suggest fees without letting you adjust them, or rely on a different validation and recovery model than you expect.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Address formats | Confirm support for Bech32/native SegWit and any legacy format you need, including compatibility with the other wallet or service. |
| Fee controls | Check whether the wallet suggests a fee, shows it before signing, lets you adjust it, and explains any confirmation target. |
| Custody and recovery | Find out who controls the funds and who must secure credentials and backups. Bitcoin.org notes that users with full control remain responsible for securing and backing up their wallets. |
| Transaction validation | A lightweight client can avoid downloading the full blockchain. A full node validates blocks and transactions but requires more storage, bandwidth, and memory. |
| Privacy and hardware compatibility | Check address rotation, network privacy features, and whether the software pairs with the hardware wallet you intend to use. These are distinct capabilities, not consequences of supporting multiple chains. |
Bitcoin.org’s wallet comparison criteria treat these as separate considerations. Do not infer that a wallet is self-custodial, fully validating, private, or compatible with a particular hardware wallet just because it supports Bitcoin or Bech32. If you want offline custody and transaction signing, verify that the hardware wallet supports the coins, address types, and signing workflow you need, and that it pairs with your software.

What are the limits after you send?
Bitcoin.org states: “Bitcoin transactions are irreversible: once confirmed, they can only be refunded by the person receiving the funds.” A fee choice cannot undo a mistaken destination address, so check the complete address before signing and sending.
Confirmation timing is also uncertain. Bitcoin.org explains that block discovery is probabilistic, with no guaranteed minimum or maximum delay. A fee estimate can help you choose how much to pay under current conditions, but it cannot guarantee a particular confirmation time.
